Excluding Brady, post which player you think is the best (or near best) in the league today at their respective position.

My vote is split between:

K - Stephen Gostkowski

and

3rd Down RB - Kevin Faulk

Cassel is a pretty awesome back-up QB, but wow, probably a 3-way tie between Paxton, Gost, and Faulk.

Some beasts on the team, but those three are consistently on-the-money.

Moss and Welker were amazing last year. This year it's been a bit tougher, but by year's end it could very well be a 5-way tie, with Cassel still being the best backup-QB on the team. ;)

I'd say Moss.

The only thing about Moss, it seems, is you need a good QB to take advantage of what he does. He won't make a bad QB look that good.

For instance, consider when Moss runs the sideline routes. He creates this window up top where a QB can put the ball and only Moss will get to it. However, many QBs cannot get it to that spot in the first place.

i also agree with gost...(but would wait for him to prove himself a bit more...also, i dont follow other kickers too closely, so dont know how they are doing :D)

and faulk is no contest...there is no other player in the league that can do what he does...hes even better then regie bush (if that is bush's true role)

i would also put up welker as the best slot reciever in the league

and so far, yea, cassel may be the best backup QB

no one on defense...interesting(hopefully in a couple more weeks we can add seymour to the list)

Wes Welker. There is no slot wr that can hold a candle to him.

Logan Mankins, best interior lineman I've seen in a while. That man is amazing when he screams down the LOS on a pull...pretty sure id drop in the fetal position if i was a de staring down that train.

Wilfork has to be up there for nt's...how many of you would trade him at even money for any given nose in the league?

Paxton

Gost is up there

I'd put hobbs in top 5 on ST

i think wilfork is the 2nd best in the league...SD's jammal williams is non human, but number 1

I'll give you that, and just to clarify, I wasn't saying MANkins is the best LG either, but clearly among the elite, as is Welker and Randy, who I did not mention originally.

If anyone even thinks of mentioning our "anchor" on the left, aka Mr. Yips...they should also take a bullet from Harrison

Moss, probably. Wilfork, Thomas, Welker, and Mankins all warrant consideration too.

Welker is absolutely the best slot reciever in the league. He is quietly on pace for a second consecutive 110+ catch year.

Faulk probably plays the traditional 3rd down back role better than anyone else in the league. Faulk fits his role perfectly. Other backs cannot replace what he does for the offense.

I don't think he is the best defensive tackle in the league, but I don't think there is a better 3-4 nose tackle than Wilfork.

gonna have to go with Moss, but gonna have to agree that he is better with a great qb

so this seaon I will say welker, dude is clutch not only when needed at crunch time, but pretty much 99.9% of the time.

Lonnie Paxton is the best deep snapper in the league

welker cause he's tailor made for the pats offense

No love for Lonnie Paxton?

When was the last time he screwed up?

No love for Lonnie Paxton?

When was the last time he screwed up?

Didn't he blow a snap or two coming back from some injury?

I think in at least one case the holder saved a high snap.

And I think he's committed a penalty or two. :)

Moss is the best WR in the NFL, period. Welker is arguably the best slot receiver. Paxton is an amazing LS, best in my opinion (but I don't really watch other long snappers much). As much as I like Gostkowski, I think Bironas is the best K right now. Faulk is up there as one of the best 3rd down backs along with Sproles, Westbrook, and LT. Wilfork is probably #2 or 3 NT. Hobbs is a great kick return man, but not as good as Hester. But, nobody mentioned Mr. Kelley Washington on special teams.

Moss is the only no-doubt hall of famer currently lacing them up every Sunday for the Patriots, so I'd say it's him in a walk.

That said, Wes Welker is also probably the best slot/possession guy in the league.

And Seymour is as talented as any DE out there.

Guys who are among the elite at their positions, and wouldn't shock me if any given season they were the clearcut #1, are:

Brady
Moss
Welker
Faulk
Mankins
Gost
Paxton
Seymour
Wilfork

Brady, Moss, Mankins, and Gost have clear-cut Pro Bowl/All-Pro positions. I don't know how to judge OGs who give up occasional sacks, but basically all four are in the discussion for best.

Seymour and Wilfork are in a logjam at "interior DL". But basically they're elite players, near the best in the league when they're on.

Faulk is the best shotgun-specialist RB, period. Maybe some of the elite generalist RBs can outdo him in that role, maybe not.

If you count Welker as a slot reciever but Hines Ward as a generalist, Welker is the best in the league by far.

I don't know whether Paxton stands alone as the best in the league or not. If it weren't for the snow angels, would fans of other teams have heard of him? How do we know whether other teams have great long snappers too?

Beyond the above, guys who wouldn't shock me if they in any given season made the Pro Bowl include:

Light (I guess, since he actually did)
Koppen
Warren
A. Thomas

I have no idea how to rate the ST cover guys.

what? no love for the secondary?? oh wait.. forget it...
