Boomer had a number of interesting comments this morning on EEI - noting how a game like yesterday is HUGE for Cassell's confidence, with the D&C chiming in about the positive locker room quotes from teammates in support of Cassell

He noted that Cassell cutting the number of sacks compared to the Denver game is especially important - and asserted that they previously were caused by Cassell holding onto the ball too long (he actually might want to review the game tape of Denver because 5 out of the six looked like poor blocking and coverage to me - which includes more than just the OL, but regardless wasn't Cassell's fault)

In any event whether its the OL or Cassell stepping up in the pocket and getting rid of the ball - he had a lot more time yesterday, and that's the important thing.

On some other issues he made the point - that I've been making about our prospects with Cassell from Day One - that given the number of injuries in the NFL, and the just overall poor play of QBs elsewhere - that if the Patriots make the playoffs ANYTHING is possible at that point.

Actually for a guy who makes his living as a TV commentator, Boomer was refreshingly candid saying that some of the games they cover on TV are nearly impossible to watch, they're so bad!

He made one additional point about the Jets - and while it might have been somewhat facetious (I'm not sure) he noted how awful Favre has been and that had the Jets lost to the Chiefs, Mangini might not have had a job as of today.

That's telling to me if Boomer's saying that - how many others in the NFL - including Woody Johnson - must be questioning Mangini's ability to win after spending $120 million in the offseason, botching a top 6 draft pick, bringing in an expensive QB older than their head coach and failing to win in a division that is wide open with the Patriots playing without their starting QB and RB - as well as other key starters.

Boomer is actually one of the only TV experts I really like. Boomer can be a little bit of a **** sometimes, but he's the best of the NBC crew. And Long and Johnson are the only thing worth their salt at Fox. And don't make comment on ESPN, of which everyone should be locked in a burning building, with the exception of Keyshawn, who is probably my favorite of all.

The Patriots absolutely can make a run if Morris and Jordan are strong. A good run game, good defense and an accurate QB (which Cassel has been) with some big time WR threats - why not ? With the apparent demise of the Colts there's no AFC team that scares me anymore.

Boomer is always a must listen for me on Patriots Monday.

His interview, and all the others, will be here :

Patriots Monday and Friday Audio and Video brought to you by WEEI 850AM Sports Radio

soon enough.

Some of the blame has to fall on Tannenbaum, but I think even with a well built team Mangini is a 10-6 coach at best. Still, despite all of the issues you mentioned, they're 4-3 and 1 game back of the division. Go figure.

Re: Boomer Esiason on WEEI re: Cassell, the Playoffs and Mangini's Job Security

Now if we can just have Boomer cover the spelling of Cassel's name for Pats fans everywhere that would be a true service to the kid...

j/k ;)

Mangini will reap what he has sown, obscurity as a HFC of a team in east bumfukc..

Boomer's been a little harsh on Cassel so far this year every time I've heard him, thought he was a little more fair today. I agree - the sacks the week before certainly had something to do with the OL. You can't fault Cassel for not being able to cover up all of the OL's mistakes the way Brady could.

As for the Pats and the Super Bowl - I'm going to pull a quote from the Sox and say "Why not us?" I mean, really. Looking around the league, who scares you? Certainly I don't think our chances are a fraction as good as what they'd have been if Brady were healthy, but I wouldn't be surprised if we have a rematch against the Giants at the end of the year.

Basically, I think we have as good a chance as anybody to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this February.

Last I checked the season is only in week 9 and we are one back of the division. a lot has yet to be decided

Re: Boomer Esiason on WEEI re: Cassell, the Playoffs and Mangini's Job Security

I think it's still a little early to call Gholston a bust. I didn't like a lot of the moves they made this year, though. Pace wasn't worth all that dough and Favre looks like a terrified old man out there.

Re: Boomer Esiason on WEEI re: Cassell, the Playoffs and Mangini's Job Security

The Jets should be better. They are a product of bad coaching and an absolutely mystifying QB move.

Still, gotta love the Jets... for staying out of the race.

You were almost done yesterday.

You now have your "test" month. 3 games on the road at Buffalo, NE and Tenn. The Rams are no slouch now either. Based on the Jets play the last 2 weeks, they will lose all 4. You have to hope they are playing to the level of their competition.....

That said the Jets are still in contention for the division. The bills are a good team but they are over hyped. They lost soundly to the fins yesterday, were half a quarter from losing to the raiders earlier in the year, were killed by the same arizona cardinals who many here called a joke after we beat them, and beat up on a bad seattle team. If we beat the bills and you guys lose to the colts then its a three way tie. Rams wont be easy but we can beat them as well. @ NE is a winnable game. No S-Jax and the Rams took you guys to the final gun. Tennessee I dont see us winning. Bottom line is a lot is left to be decided and the Jets are still in contention for the division.

True enough -

But I think the point he was making though is that had Mangini, after spending $120 million, plus a HoF QB, in a Division where the perennial leader was playing with one hand and a leg tied behind their back, fallen even FURTHER behind playing against what everyone agrees is a VERY bad Chiefs team, his job might have been in jeopardy as of right now.

You can tell me whether there's a serious question about the ability of Mangini to lead this team, as I'm obviously not a Jets fan. I know the Gang Green Messageboard has had a lot of fans calling for him to be fired. I know some are questioning whether guys like Pace and Woody - while not necessarily bad pickups - are worth their contracts. And regarding striking out - if indeed they strike out - on Gholston I'll just say that I'll be the first to admit is always a possibility no matter who is running your organization, but in Mangini's case it could be the straw that break's Woody Johnson's back.

I know there's been a litany of players who have seemingly successfully manipulated the organization to force a trade or restructuring/extension of contract. All of that - and the NY Times article that says players rate Mangini as one of the coaches they'd LEAST like to play for - would be factors if I were the Jets owner.

But wouldn't you agree that Favre is keeping both teams in a lot of these games?

Oh, if you want to get into a mangina hate fest then I will lead the charge. The guy will be a good coach IMO but he is too f'in stubborn, lacks common sense and coaches like a mangina. after yesterdays game mangina said that we would have ran more but TE Chris Bakers hip was acting up so we would have to fool the chiefs to run the ball This is against the statistical worst run D in the NFL The man has been getting outcoached by the likes of Herm and Tom Cable

The player aspect I would have signed pace again knowing what I know now He is a beast 6'5' relentless motor good pass rusher good at covering the TE/ Kris Jenkins was a steal of a trade He has been nothing short of pro bowl calbier and he has made it possible for guys like shaun ellis to rack u 6 sacks b/c he draws constant double teams

yes I would agree/ his picks have a tendency to be thrown while in the red one or thrown to give the other team a short field to work with/ That said Favre put us in FG range w/ one min to go in oakland from our own 5/ He also lead us down for the win last week

Re: Boomer Esiason on WEEI re: Cassell, the Playoffs and Mangini's Job Security

I'll have what he's having......

What do u disagree with?

Re: Boomer Esiason on WEEI re: Cassell, the Playoffs and Mangini's Job Security

The Jets aren't out of the division race yet, but their coaches and QB are doing everything possible to take them out of it. As long as they have Favre as their QB, I can't see them winning the AFC East. I thought it was a bad move for the Jets when they made it. They got the 2005 Brett Favre, not the adnormality of last year. Favre has thrown seven picks in the last three games. And he hasn't actually been facing the best defenses in the league.

I heard Boomer this morning and I think he was using a hyperbole to make a point. I don't see Mangini being fired during the season. I don't know if he will be the head coach next year, but if the Jets struggle so bad against the worst teams in the league what is going to happen when they play the Bills, Titans, Pats again, etc.?

Keep thinking that way if it helps you sleep better at night............
