Belichick upset near the end of the game?

slippery slope with the delayed knee down. Just wait until Cassel take a knee and gets slammed and the story will be that they didn't blow the whistle fast enough.

This is exactly what I am thinking. I saw BB upset and I think we all figured out the reason but I have to side with the refs on this one The earley whistle is to protect the QB when he is giving himself up on the play. The delayed knee is just begging the defense to come at Cassel. If you want to run more time off of the clock then run a play.

I was thinking that same thing. About the most satisfactory answer that occurred to me was, "if we kill three downs and then punt, there's little chance of them returning that for a TD."

But remember that Hall helped them out by burning a lot of time dithering in the end zone. The Rams should have had time to run at least 2 plays from scrimmage.

Wasn't it last year when Vrabel went after a QB on the kneel down and was accused of playing dirty?

As much as I HATE to admit this, I agree with the refs on the early whistle. While it was a mistake by them, it was a mistake that sprung from the desire to protect the QB. They assumed it would be a kneel down and they don't want a late whistle to be the excuse for a stupid defensive player taking a shot at someone's knees... especially the QB. Vrabel (I think it was him) once caught some flak for taking it to a QB that tried a delayed kneel down.

If the Pats wanted to run some time off the clock, they should have called a running play. The only reason I can see why they didn't is that BB was worried that Faulk or BJGE might fumble. I still think we should have ran the ball to run the clock out. The delayed kneel down is a stupid and dangerous play IMO. You are treading on the good graces of the defense to play gentlemenly, but why should they? The game is on the line and the play is not dead. I don't like the call at all. Run the d@mn ball.

So what your saying is the ref should blow a play dead just because he thinks the QB is in danger? Think about what you're saying there. The delayed kneel down is a perfectly good way to run a few extra seconds off the clock.

A ref can't just decide to blow the whistle. He HAS to wait until the play is over. PERIOD

What was BB so upset about in the fourth quarter? He was screaming at more than one official. Did anyone notice anything?

Cassel waited to take a knee but the refs stopped the clock immediately

Lol never mind, didn’t see all of the responses

Take a look at the refs face when BB is blowing up. It's a "we blew it, okay?" look.........and they knew it....

I understand the rule but taking a knee is a specific play that the NFL allows to PROTECT the QB. A player going to his knees is not down normally unless touched by another player. The rules change in this specific situation in order to protect the QB. So yes I am saying that the Refs should blow the whistle when it is clear that the QB is going to kneel. If more QBs decide to delay their kneel then I think we are sacrificing their safety for a few seconds and that is a bad idea. This is not a normal play and as much as I like how BB thinks and how he creatively works the rules I think it is a bad idea and I am still with the refs on this

BB was probably upset too that his team wasn't playing very well against a very mediocre Rams team.

Yeah. If you watch the press conference today you'll see that he's suspending them all for sucking. He's going to the game next week alone.

You're missing the point entirely. The following quote is all that matters on this. "It's not up to the refs, they must wait until the play is over before blowing the whistle." Every team does this delayed kneel down at some point or another, it's not just BB and the Pats. The refs blew the call PERIOD

Nice eek out of a win by your JETS vs KC Sunday!

BB was about to fight them refs.

Bold facing your words does not really mean it is the end of all discussion (and neither does writing period instead of using .).

Like I said I understand when the whistle is supposed to sound. I think everyone on this site does. When the QB is giving himself up on a play the ref has a few concerns.

1. Making sure the QB does not get hurt while taking a knee
2. Timing the whistle to exactly match with the moment the knee touches the ground.

He has more to watch then just those 2 things I am sure but still my point is made. Refs are not machines and they have to make judgement calls. I for one am fine with him putting a higher priority on protecting Cassel then matching his whistle with a knee hitting the ground (he was going to kneel after all). If the game ending with the Rams scoring on the final play of the game I would not blame the Refs for the loss but I would blame the play calling. Their was over a minute left to go and the Rams had 2 time outs. K Faulk has been solid let him run the ball for 3 plays.

It is easier to just run a play where the Ref does not have to make a judgement ( a run play again)

I agree with RobDude, Lloyd and jbb9s: a delayed kneel-down, though it may not break the letter of the rule, IMO def. breaks the spirit of the rule.

If I were a DLman, and a QB tried to pull that stunt, I would not hesitate to hit him as hard - but cleanly (unless he's a Manning) - as I could.

P.S.: allowing a non-contact kneel-down by the QB is another gay over-protecting rule that should be eliminated. Run a damn play.

Give Belichick his due, he made sure he chewed-out the entire refreeeing crew in an F-Bomb laced tirade.
Here we have Coach BB, and at the other extreme is the deer in headlights guy the 49ers just fired. Thank God for BB.

Well, BB knew the team was on cusp of making history as the teams first game without a penalty, so he did his darnedest to get a yellow flag called on himself, but failed.
