4'2" cranberry gnome Fred Norman poses with towering WR Wes Welker in Wes's new private cranberry bog. Both Fred and the bog were part of an incentive clause in Welker's contract. Local sports agents spoke of Bob Kraft's clever planning to incorporate the incentive into the new Krafty Park at Patriot Place.

Ah man....these things will stain my uniform......

Awesome promotion. Very effective, and the secondary coverage has been very good. Kudos to the person who planned that.

So, I don't get it. Do the cranberrys grow in the water (sort of like algae)? Or do they get dumped in the water after they are pulled off of a bush or tree? And what are the stick things the guys are holding?

I think the berries just grow in the water not sure though

Cranberries are hollow. When they are redy to pick, the fields get flooded and the cranberries float to the top of the water. It is easier to harvest them that way.

Cranberries are low, creeping shrubs or vines up to 2 m long and 5 to 20 cm in height;[1] they have slender, wiry stems that are not thickly woody and have small evergreen leaves. The flowers are dark pink, with very distinct reflexed petals, leaving the style and stamens fully exposed and pointing forward. They are pollinated by domestic honey bees. The fruit is an epigynous berry that is larger than the leaves of the plant; it is initially white, but turns a deep red when fully ripe. It is edible, with an acidic taste that can overwhelm its sweetness.

A common misconception about cranberry production is that the beds remain flooded throughout the year. During the growing season cranberry beds are not flooded, but are irrigated regularly to maintain soil moisture. Beds are flooded in the Autumn to facilitate harvest and again during the Winter to protect against low temperatures. In cold climates like Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and eastern Canada the Winter flood typically freezes into ice while in warmer climates the water remains liquid. When ice forms on the beds trucks can be driven onto the ice to spread a thin layer of sand that helps to control pests and to rejuvenate the vines. Sanding is done every three to five years.

Not to nitpick, but they are made of wood just like witches, which is why they float.

Alternatively, they could also just be less dense than water, like many fruits are.

Is this in my contract?

Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker and his personal bar tender await the arrival of a tanker truck of Vodka, and 2000 pounds of ice needed to make the world's largest Cape Cod.

Just for this stunt I'm going to drop a deep pass today on purpose. Friggin cranberries....

Randy Moss and Matt Cassel, standing off-camera:

Randy: "Hey Matt--which do you think would be more embarrassing: standing up there like Wes, or being photographed holding a goat?"
A few seconds of awkward silence
Both: "The goat."

I would have bet $100 that this was photoshopped.

It was either this or an oreo licking gig. I figured this wasn't as bad.

My understanding is they have a "beater" machine that literally beats the bushes shaking the cranberries loose so they float on the water and then can be scooped up.
