Idiots. Anyway, O'Connell will be the backup next year IMO. If Brady isn't ready, he'll play.

Yeah it will be Cassell, O'Connell and a later round draftee next year or Gutz.

BTW, to spare you giving FESPN hits, I'll post the list of QBs he notes should be available next spring:

* Kurt Warner
* Kerry Collins
* Jeff Garcia
* J.P. Losman
* Rex Grossman
* Kyle Boller
* J.T. O'Sullivan
* Byron Leftwich
* Charlie Frye
* Patrick Ramsey
* Alex Smith (under contract but likely to be cut)

And if none of them do anything for you, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper and Chris Simms always seem available.

Even more amazingly, at least two posters think Alex Smith might make a good choice. :rolleyes:

They forgot that guy that was a backup for his entire college career.

Brad Johnson

The QB's for the Pats in '09 will be:

Tom Brady
Matt Cassel
Kevin O'Connell

Is it really that hard to figure out?

I agree with the poster that called it a hatchet job. Very precise post.

I don't know if Cassel'll be back but... so far, I have heard NOTHING which has convinced me we're gonna be without Brady next year.

As far as Alex Smith.... he'd be interesting to kick the tires of. He could be a worthwhile pickup in the New England environment. He'd have solid receivers (not so in SF) and a stable and innovative coaching staff (not so in SF). Those are helpful, I've heard!:)

But yeah, it'll be Brady behind center next year.

ESPN has OFFICIALLY convinced me that their network is nothing more than a piece of garbage. :banned:

wow, someone better tell BB that we need a backup plan.

I doubt he has thought of this already....

Can we really get Rex Grossman? Really?

Well, Cassel is slated to be a UFA at this point, so there's no guarantees there. But if he leaves, I expect O'Connell will be the #2.

I heard something pretty interesting on NE Comcast Sports last night. Now I know that ESPN and the Pats aren't allies - obviously....but Felger stated that this "fued" is still on-going. Okay. I'm just a little confused, however. When did the fued start and why? I have a feeling it was WAY before Spygate. Does it go as far back as Jackson's "they hate their coach" and only grown from there?

BB is focusing on the Rams not speculating on the depth chart for next year, except to the extend of deciding to offer a contract to Cassel this year.

I don't really see the harm in them discussing it. After all, that's what ESPN does. You'd better believe that Pioli is already thinking about what will happen IF Brady can't return in 2009.

As long as ESPN doesn't literally inject bacteria into Tom's knee, I have a hard time getting riled up over them discussing this. The report about the team being unhappy with him is another matter, but that's pretty inconsequential as well. ESPN is by it's very nature sensationalist, this is what they do.

Fixed your post for you.

I think the motivation is obvious, last year they had a windfall of press and views based on Spygate, this IMHO is nothing more than something to fill that void. If I was the head of ESPN and all of a sudden my ID ratings or views were off significantly from last year, I would need to do something.

Obviously, there is something between Farve and ESPN so that's not gonna play - but the Brady thing will help - it's no Spygate, but it will help.
