My gf decided that recording Heroes was more important than me getting to rewatch a Patriots game (funny how her interest in the Pats has declined since Brady went down...), so I only have the 2nd half recorded.

I'm more interested in seeing how they started the game though, as I remember that the heavy rotations of defensive players started early and often. One might look at those #s and think it had something to do with the blowout, but I know its not the case.

Does anyone here remember or have the desire to go back and see what our nickel package - which according to Reiss was used against their base offense - looked like the other nite, personnel wise?

In terms of the offense, I love that we're using 2TE more. I hope this carries over for when Brady is back, it could make the offense that much more effective. It seems to combat the so-called "blueprint" that the Giants carried out. Granted, the Broncos D sucks, and sucks quite a bit, so maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

Well, a simple way to gauge things is to count up snaps for DBs, LBs, and DLs:

DB: 292 snaps
LB: 220 snaps
DL (including "TE" Ty Warren ): 133 snaps

Although this only adds up to 645 snaps, not the 660 it should, it's fairly obvious that the Pats spent a lot of time in nickel formations, usually removing one of the DLs to do it.

LOL. Actually that's me, I hate watching stuff online when you could watch it on a TV. I spend 8+ hours a day staring at a computer screen, of all things editing video, the thought of sitting at a computer and watching more video when I get back often makes me want to throw up. For some reason, I find TV viewing acceptable.

It was very interesting to me to see that UDFA Gary Guyton

was in on 31 of 60 defensive snaps. BB commented that Guyton

was improving very quickly for a rookie. Maybe, the Pats have

Tedy Bruschi's replacement already in place.

Good call. OK, so it was likely a 2-4-5 they were often in, then? When they went dime, an LB would come off for an extra DB...that'd make sense.

One thing I noticed was a little more pressure up the middle from the LBs, Guyton, Bruschi, Mayo on a play or two. Not a lot, but more than any other week.

Mayo's role in coverage has remained the same, he basically spies the RB, but the Broncos were keeping the RB in for blocking a lot.

AD again in on every snap, I maintain he's our defensive MVP so far simply for his versatility.

I'm hoping so. SILB was going to be high on my list of draft needs going into April 09, but Guyton is making it look less and less important. He is big and has great size, and looks like he knows what he is doing out there.

I wonder if Ruud will ever provide some depth at ILB, he's the rookie I know least about, and have the least expectations for.

Belichick seems to really like Guyton, on BB's WEEI interview he went out of his way to mention the fumble recovery Guyton had and seemed more excited about it thant he "right place at the right time" that it looked like to me.

Probably a DL, not LB; the snap ratio works out to about 2 DL:4 LB:5 DB.

Probably, although I do remember the MNF crewwww saying that the Pats had plays with just one DL.

BTW--Reiss updated his numbers.

The revised totals:
DL = 136 = 2.27 avg/play
LB = 225 = 3.75 avg/play
DB = 299 = 4.98 avg/play [159 CB, 140 S]

In other words, the "base alignment" for this game seems to have been the nickel defense, with a CB or S replacing the third DL.

Really nice to see that they are integrating Guyton, Richardson and how many snaps Mayo is getting.. bringing this new blood into this mix is a very good thing..
