Okay, all together now.....

"Spann, Spann.

He's the man.

If he can't do it, nobody can!"

Spann Spann Spann Spann
Spann Spann Spann Spann
Spaan... wonderful Spaan

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

Damn, Damn, Damn

I was hoping somehow it wouldn't be an IR thing.

I hope Spann is just here in the interim until we can get Lynch. If we don't get him than apparently he was not as good a fit as we would like to think.

Not me. I hope Spann has the "spark" like so many low-rounders and UDFA's in this system show. He's younger and faster than Lynch and is trained in the system. If he's got good instincts and can tackle well, he's an infinitely better value add-on.

Brady out, Cassel promoted.
Maroney out, BJGE promoted.
Kaczur out, LeVoir Promoted.
Harrison out, Spann promoted.

This year just may write the adage that in times of war, it is wiser to look for answers within.

I like what I saw out of Spann in TC and preseason but he doesn't offer that physical at the line play that Rodney did and like Lynch has. As I said if we stick with Spann than it means BB saw something he didn't like when Lynch was here. I am OK with that as Spann would just be a back up but to ignore the fact that on the surface Lynch appears to be the perfect replacement for Harrison just because you have hopes of a "spark" is wishful thinking.

Basically what I am saying is that Spann may have more upside and may actually be a better safety at this point in their careers but Lynch certainly appears to be better equiped to play a similar role as Rodney (physical, at the Line of Scrimage, blitzing, just smart veteran play). Let Merriweather and Sanders be the youth and bring in a vet in the mold of Rodney.

Lynch is trained in our system for 2 weeks so knows part of it and BB still doesn't think he can add more than Spann. If BB thought Lynch could bring more he would have kept him around instead of Ventrone most likely.

LaVoir was a Waiver Claim. He wasn't promoted off the practice squad.

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

It's not really Spann replacing Harrison, but Meriwather replacing Harrison and Spann taking over Meriweather's role on ST. If Lynch was signed he would not be playing ST.

I didn't say promoted from the practice squad. Promoted as in moved up in importance - as opposed to staying put and being replaced else-wise.

I understand now.
Now worries.. It was just a point of information.

Re: BB PC on live right now. (Spann activated, Rodney to IR, more...)

He did touch on that with the Big show guys yesterday too. Said he didn't think Sammy was hurt on the last play where he ran well. Apparently he felt he something earlier and after they looked at it in the locker room at half time the decision was made by the trainers/doctor to hold him out of the second half. So maybe he has a mild ligament sprain or a bone bruise or some such and they just didn't think it was wise to push his luck before assessing it further. Holley is also usually pretty connected and he's referred to it as a little dinged up.

That's more info than we usually get about these guys' injury status. Good news about Sammy. Hopefully Jordan too will recover soon. I was very pleased with BJGE's running style and ball protection Monday, although most anyone capable of making an NFL squad woulda looked good against the Donks in that particular outing.

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

I think by signing Lynch it would move the team backwards in terms of age then it would move it forward with younger athletes and the future of this team

BB does not want to make this team older if for the sake of just one year,I think he wants the younger guys to get more experience so when the older guys leave, the younger guys will do thier best to not skip a beat and that comes with experience.

For the example of Rodney,it sucks he got hurt but for the future of this team years down the road, its for the best as now the younger guys get more time and experience and it bodes well for the future and keeping the team ready to compete year after year..

Another factor could be attitude. IIRC Lynch was only willing to sign if he started. BB wanted to use him in rotation. Since then Spann has busted his butt on the PS. I think that kind of dynamic is why Cassel never lost his job to some primia dona hasbin Vet QB.

Gary Guyton is slowly becoming on my favorite players. Being an UDFA in this league isn't easy, but he's obviously taken the time and effort to improve on the mental aspect of playing NFL football, as he has always had the physical attributes. How awesome would it be if Mayo and Guyton became the best tandem in the league? Both are definitely athletic and hardworking enough. One is a top 10 pick, and other is an UDFA. That would be awesome :)

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

If Lynch were expected to be better than Spann this year, he would have been signed. Spann is not being moved to the 53 because Belichick would rather have poor quality prospect than and old veteran. And Spann may be on the squad next week, or not.

Also, this pulls down the "old defense" lines even further. Sucks to be the media.

Somehow I suspect they'll find a way to keep making the claim that our defense is old and decrepit

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

Ever since I met him and fell in love with his attitude (all competitor, no arrogance, which is an unusual combination), I've been a big Spann fan. I hope he sticks this time.

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

Please sign John Lynch now!!! as a back up to Merriweather and Sanders!!

Re: Harrison IR official, Spann promoted

I agree. What I did see of Spann in preseason looked good. He seems to have some speed and is physical.

I agree. As of now, we have no backup SS. We have nobody with the size & speed to cover TEs & RBs, and to help in run support. We are in the same predicament in which we found ourselves during the 2006 POs. The FO needs to at least give Lynch a call, to see if his physical abilities/limitations are salvagable. If they aren't, then the FO needs to at least inquire into the whereabouts of Greg Wesley & Stuart Schweigert.
