From Reiss's mailbag:

Entering Monday night's game, 12 NFL teams had called on a backup quarterback to either start a game, or enter a scoreless game in the first quarter. Eight of those teams have losing records in those situations. So I think it's clear that when teams have to go to their backup, it's usually bad news.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

Just furthur evidence of how many Pats fans are thoroughly spoiled by Brady and wining. The fantasy fans throw a tantrum when the team is not scoring 40 pts/game. Kinda quiet on that front this week, but wait untill Cassel has his real stinker of a game throwing 2-3 picks when he is the main reason the Pats lose. All QBs have a game or so like that. Farve a few more than most. :)

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

I remember reading a article in the off-season and it said something that there 60 QB's that started in at least one game last season. That's a pretty amazing stat.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

How many backups have posted a QB rating as high as Cassel in an individual game ?

So you mean most teams dont have an all star back up QB as many complained we did not have and were at fault for not having.

Backups ziltch...

QB in total 8, including Philip Rivers 141.9 against NEP defense.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

Usually a QB is a back up because he sucks as a starter. There aren't enough starting quality QBs in the league even when the position is at full strength. That is why guys like JT O'Sullivan, Brodie Croyle (at least until he was IRed), and Kerry Collins have starting jobs.

I don't know if Cassel is the best back up the Pats could have had going into the season, but once Brady went down he was their best option to replace him.

I do agree that people are spoiled with Brady. I think there are far too many people on this board who jump off a cliff every time there is a remote sign of trouble.

Many of them do have an "all star QB" that went to the pro-bowl when Matt was a star QB at Chatsworth High School. It just they suck now.

I heartily disagree. Not enough people jump off a cliff every time there is a remote sign of trouble.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

Here's the fairest way to evaluate the quality of a #2 quarterback, IMO:

List all the QBs in the league who you think are better than him.

- If the number is 32 or less, your backup is truly outstanding.
- If it's 48 or less, that's a very good, solid backup QB.
- 64 or less and you have a reasonable backup, but nothing more than that.
- Over 64 and you haven't put yourself in a good position with QB depth.

Personally, I don't think I can go above 48 with Cassel.

I know I couldn't get past 48, I am not even sure if I could get to 32.

Great analysis, but it's lost on the vocal crowd who even prefer guys NOBODY in the 32 team league will sign, like Culpepper. Of course that vocal crowd lies low and doesn't start 50 threads after a big Pats W like Monday night. They'll be back in force posting threads at the 1st signs of adversity and after Cassel's stinker game.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

How many teams in the league have the talent, the attitude in the locker room and the coaching staff that the Patriots have?

How would those vet QBS perform on the Patriots? I don't know.

Cassel has done enough to bring the Patriots to 4-2.....hopefully he can overcome his obvious faults as he learns how to play the position in the NFL.

I haven't seen anybody advocate the signing of Culpepper.....this must be a figment of your imagination.

When Belichick say's that Cassel is the best guy for the job right now, I believe he is correct.

I don't post imaginary BS. We were besieged here by many posts and even threads advocating the signing of Culpepper when Brady went down. I cannot blame you for not having read those idiotic rants.

I wouldn't read a thread adovating gettning Culpepper because that is assanine.

Just search this board for Threads with Culpepper in them and you will find plenty of people advocating that.

Were you being Sarcastic?:D I suspect you were.

Re: Cassel vs the Vaunted Vet Backup

Lets be realistic. What has Cassel done that ANY other crap QB can't do? The throws he makes are essentially the "easy stuff": Screens, slants, dump offs. The knock on him is that he is incapable of (or just sucks at) doing the stuff that guys get paid money to do, like create time in the pocket, make down field reads, deliver the ball in traffic, interprete coverages QUICKLY and make good on field decisions.

By the way, I judge the Pats on the upper 25% of what the other teams are doing, not the bottom 75%. So lets compare him to the top backups: Garcia, Ferrotte, Carr, Collins, etc. I would take ANY ONE OF THEM over him. The ONLY THING he has going right now is knowledge of the system. PERIOD. And this is BB's fault. We should have been carrying a veteran the last 4 years.

PS He also is at the helm of a group of guys that were one of the most prolific offenses in history. Keep that in mind when comparing him to Brady of 2001. Welker/Moss vs. Troy Brown/Patten, Watson vs. Wiggins...
