Thoughts on deferring

The coin toss. Do you like it? Obviously, BB does, apparently at the College level it has provided a statistical advantage. But I couldn't help feeling on Denver's first drive down the field how I would love to see the offense get on the field first and set the tone, allowing Cassel to warm up and settle in instead of sitting on the sidelines. Of course, the turnover changed all that and vindicated the decision. Now that we've seen it a few times already, your thoughts about it as the season progresses? It seems pretty clear that BB plans to defer any winning toss.

It's a great thing to do if you go into the lead with the half. Being able to score on the first possession of the 2nd half helps a lot.

I like it. Well except in game one.

As has been explained if you chose to take the ball to start the game you have no real advantage as the other team gets it at half but if you chose to defer and you score leading into the half you get a chance for 2 scores in row. And I think this has helped us once or twice this year.

Definately think it's best. If you're winning at halftime, you have a chance to extend it. If you're losing at halftime, you make sure that they do not have a chance to extend before you do.

before, you either chose to kick or recieve, and you would get the opposite to start the 2nd half. This is how it works in every video game released for the last 20 years and I can't remember if I ever watched a team get the ball to start both halves...

Can someone explain to me, exactly what changed?

Before the team that won the coin toss got to pick whether to receive or kickoff in the first half and the other team got to pick in the second half. Naturally both teams chose the ball to start the half.

Now, however, the coin toss winner can defer the decision and make their decision for the second half.

Personally I don't like deferring but I'm a **** who hates to be behind at any point in the game.

Before, you could choose to kick or receive to start the game. Then at the beginning of the second half, the other team would choose if they wanted to kick or receive. So this is why everyone would receive. Because it was certain that they would not get the ball to start the second half either.

I've always in Digital Football kicked off because I wanted the ball in the second half...

I guess it's about momentum. How often do you get to the half and have a situation where you think the game could either get away from you or you could put it away with scores either side of half time?

You don't get that sort of momentum shift ever at the beginning of the game.

I would always defer.

Nothing is new, it's exactly the same as before. The winner of the coin toss got to choose whether to kick or receive in the first half and would get the opposite in the second half. Deferring may be the most pointless rule change in the history of the game. What dumbass team that wins the coin toss would decide to kick in the first half and then kick again in the second half? Of course you want the ball in the second half if you kick off in the first half. Pointless!

It is not the same as before.

Under the old system:
-The winner was forced to chose whether they wanted to kick/receive in the first half.
-The loser was forced to chose whether they wanted to kick/receive in the second half.
-It was not automatically the opposite in the second half. If you won the toss and decided to kick, the other team still had the option of deciding to receive in the second half. Obviously, this was stupid, so no one did it. If you won the toss you were forced to receive the ball to start the game.

Under the new system:
-The winner can decide whether they want to chose to kick/receive for the the first or the second half. If they chose to defer their decision to the second half, the losing team gets to chose whether they wanted to kick/receive for the first half, and much like the situation of the OLD winning team, are forced to receive.

Basically: Before the winning team on the coin toss was forced to receive in the first half, now they can chose to receive in the first or the second half.

Here is why I think deferring helps. Defenses tire before offenses.

So if you can have a long drive at the start of the 3rd quarter add in half time plus maybe being on offense at end of the 2nd you can give your defense an extended rest to still be fresh in the 4th, while the other team's defense only get a short rest. There is no adv to resting the defense at the beginning of the 1st Q, they ain't tired yet.

Exactly, you have the opportunity to wear down the opposing defense because they will be on the field for two possessions in a row while icing the opposing offense while they are on the bench during that period play the halftime.

I really like Deferring. Especially if you are confident in your defense. It gives you such an edge to get the ball first in the second half.

Exactly, you have the opportunity to wear down the opposing defense because they will be on the field for two possessions in a row while icing the opposing offense while they are on the bench during that period play the halftime.

I wouldn't say you are wearing out the opposing defense since halftime is in between, but there is a great opportunity for significant momentum.

Regardless of why it's better to defer, it is better. Statistically, the team that gets the ball to start the 2nd half has a slightly better winning percentage. So it's bizarre to me that so many teams are still asking for the ball at the opening kickoff. As a fan, that would set off warning bells about my coach's whole approach to the game -- blindly clinging to the customary and familiar and refusing to reexamine his own assumptions.

It's a lot like the story of the researcher who published a paper showing that teams punt too often, and BB was the only coach who contacted him and requested more info on the research. So now you get to listen to announcers exclaiming on BB's "aggressive approach tonight" when he goes for it on 4th down...in the situations where it has been statistically demonstrated to be advantageous to go for it. What a daredevil.

It gives you the potential to have two back to back offensive drives, what's not to love?

BB teams usually get better as the game goes on anyways.
