I wanted to bring this up even before this IR news.
I had always thought he was under-utilized as a receiver out of the backfield.
If Faulk was at the end of his career, I could have seen Maroney as a possible 3rd down back in the future, but Faulk, to me, seems to have something left in the tank. I expect Faulk to be back next year, so, where will that leave Maroney?
What's he got, 1 more year under contract?
Thoughts?

55 yards per game
16 missed games as a starter (50%)

Move on, or be moved on.

Mike Reiss said it best on WBCN. He will come back next year and compete for the starting job. He has too much talent and low salary not to be given one more chance. He will not be given the starting job and the Pats will either bring in a veteran or a high draft pick to compete for the starting job, but Maroney won't be on the outs going into camp next season.

I agree with that too.

55 yards in a RB committee a game in a primarily passing offense. Thats not too bad.

A 3rd down back is required to pick up blitzers and to block.

However, Maroney is an inexpensive #4 back. And he has two more years left on his contract.

I dont understand how fans think that a player getting injured is a character flaw.

Maroney's shoulder is so severely injured that it would be so long before he could be back that he had to go on IR for the season.
That is not the type of injury that you can chose to play or not play with.

Gee, maybe we should call Brady a ****y because he isn't trying to rehab and be back by December? Its really the same thing.

Maroney will come to camp next year (assuming he is 100%) the same guy who came this year, one year older.
To think the BB was happy with Maroney as the starter before the injury but niow has changed his entire opinion is the reactionary, unthinking stuff this board has built such a storied reputation with.

Of course there will be competition in camp, just like there is at every other position.

i say we cut him after training camp before we can see what he can do, like Chad Jackson.

We saw what Chad Jackson can do, that was the problem.
Apparently the rest of the NFL did too, and thats why he isnt 'doing' anywhere else.

With the something pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the New England Patriots select, Chris Wells, Running back, Ohio State.

Thats his future.

Morris, Maroney, Faulk and hopefully Jordan will all be in camp next year competing for reps.

The two big differences between Brady and Maroney is Brady produced while playing and this is the first time Brady has ever been out.Maroney always seems to have issues even when he is playing.Brady played through a sports hernia.

Frankly, assuming the guys we have stay healthy, I cant think of a time when we have been better equipped to handle a RB injury.

I can live with either Morris or Jordan starting (although I think I prefer Jordan) and that leaves both of them rotating with Faulk still in his role.

Unfortunately the team saw what Jackson could do....not much..which is SAD..because I thought he would be good...BUT...he's not caught on..maybe next year..Arena Football..

I'm interested in seeing what Green-Ellis can do. He looked pretty good in pre-season and the training camps I went to. Granted, he played primarily against backups' backups, but he showed some flash and toughness. He obliterated someone last week on a blitz pickup. I wouldn't mind seeing him handle the rock 3-5 times tonight.

you got a good read on CJ after watching him only play sparingly through his rookie season? Man you can see things i cant i guess.

God, I hope not. He's way over-rated.

Everyone is right, we have faulk, morris, and maroney for next year. With his low salary he is not going anywhere. I'm still hopefully Lamont Jordan does something this year and gets signed long term.
