Three more players done for the season:

  • Hines Ward's block on Keith Rivers broke Rivers' jaw, knocking him out for the season.
  • Brodie Croyle apparently suffered ligament damage for the season, and appears to be done for the season, just after returning from the separated shoulder he suffered in the Pats game.
  • Jerry Jones says that Roy Williams broke his right forearm and is done for the season. Luckily for the Cowboys, this is safety Roy Williams, so that's likely to improve their defense. :D

Makes you wonder what--if anything--can be done to make the game safer.

Oh--as an extra bit of WTF?--apparently Cleveland still has a staph problem.

Roy Williams is a cheap shot douchebag. I have no sympathy for him.

This was exactly the mindset of a non-Pats fan in week 1. Tom Brady is a run-up-the-score douchebag. I have no sympathy for him.

Except, even setting aside my homer glasses, there's an obvious distinction: Williams has repeatedly injured players as a direct result of deliberate actions on his part that would not be necessary if he, you know, knew how to f'ing tackle properly.

Someone forward this to Goodell, who for some reason, despite the pleas against his plan by the players, wants to expand the season.

That's too bad though about those guys, especially the young guys who could get a lot of benefit with consistent playing time in a rebuilding year.

That is really a lot..more than I thought,,and definitely MORE than the usual amount of players injured...did King make any real comparison with past years as to the amount? Did he venture at all to guess why that is happening?? I agree it is a LARGE concern..not good at all.

Roy Williams was never good to begin with. One of the most overrated players in the league.

You know if that list were seperated and into specific positions you would have a Super Bowl team or at least a favorite to win it all

What a shame injuries do to a season

Here's some more:

Moral of the story: Before the NFL ramrods this proposal through, it had better analyze the reams of injury data it keeps deep in the vault at 280 Park Avenue. And it had better analyze the doomsday scenarios of a bunch of practice-squadders helping decide the playoff picture one of these years. Or else it's going to be asking for the equivalent of a playoff game with Jim Sorgi throwing to Devin Aromashodu and handing the ball to Kenton Keith.

I have a feeling the attempt to make the game safer is making it worse.

Halting high-speed motions and players (like QB's) assuming they won't get hit as much can cause as many or more injuries than players knowing how to get tackled and take a beating.

I look at Moss, Welker, and Faulk as guys who know when they're done getting yards and being able to get low and loose to avoid getting hurt, at least in watching real close this year.

At this rate, the playoffs are anyone's game because if this wave of injuries keeps up, Cassel could be the top QB in the league by mid-November. Seriously, he must be made of rubber considering he keeps getting up after getting mauled by Defenses.

The NFL is becoming a war of attrition.. not sure who will be standing at the end..

One thing for sure, The NFL is gonna loose the Ratings game Vs. 2007 this year. That alone is gonna make Goodell look at what can be done to protect players in 2009 - No matter what he may say to the public.

I noticed that Samari Rolle was listed twice. However, I think that he meant to say Adrian Wilson, who has been injured.

If the league expands to 17 or even 18 games, they are definitely going to have to expand the game roster and possibly even the over-all team roster.

1. Ratings are up this year.

2. The only thing that can be done to protect the players is to prohibit weightlifting. As long as the muscles keep getting bigger while the bones, tendons, and ligaments stay the same size, injuries will continue to become more widespread. This is the price we have to pay to watch faster, more exciting athletes.

"Ratings are up this year." Where did you see that?

If so, wait until they have to cycle the Patriots run at perfection.

20 2007 Pro Bowl players?
OK, if a Pro Bowl squad is about the same size as a roster, that would be about 100 players.

That's 20% of the league's best players.

That is a significant problem. It certainly detracts from the quality of the product the NFL is offering. Given that there are only sixteen games, eight homes games, and you buy the tickets months in advance, there are real customer satisfaction problems when fans pay premium money to see back-ups.

One interesting indicator is that very large Pro Bowl figure, compared to the relatively small 'other guy' figure. 20/100 Pro Bowlers, vs. 167/1696, or about 20% vs. 10%. That is, about 20% of 2007 Pro Bowlers are injured, but only about 10% of non-Pro Bowlers.

It's not hard to conclude that injuries are a factor of games played, and snaps played. Guys that go to the Pro Bowl are either: a) on teams that make the playoffs and get lots of publicity; or b) on the field all game, making lots of plays.

Thus, any plan to extend the season is likely to drive up injuries to starters, significantly.

I'd like to see analysis done on the type of injury sustained. I bet most of them are knee/leg injuries. It seems that this year this is a lot more diving at the legs as a form of tackling.
