Starbucks had dropped its prices.

From many of the posts I have seen here, one would think our shot at making the playoffs is nil. I figured we were a game back until, I actually looked it up. AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE PATRIOTS ARE A PLAYOFF TEAM.

The playoff starts today scenarios after six weeks in football is pretty useless. I bet if you looked at the playoff teams last year after the sixth week compared to who actually made the playoffs, there were probably a decent number of teams that made the playoffs after week six that didn't even come close.

I went back and looked. After week 6,

NEP led the AFCE 6-0, they went on to win the AFCE.
Pitt led the AFCN, they went on to win the AFCN
Indy led the AFCS ....
Chargers the AFCW ..... (barely both Denver and SD were 3-3, but the Chargers had won the tie breakers)
The 5th AFC seed was JAX, they ended the season as the 5th seed.
The 6th AFC seed was either Tenn or the Ravens both were 4-2 and I am not sure who would have one the tie breaker at that time. If it was Tenn, then the AFC after week 6 exactly mirrored the AFC at the end of the season.

Cowboys led the NFCE .....
Greenbay .... NFCN....
Bucs ... NCFS....
Seahawks.... NFCW....

The two wild card teams were the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants. NYG did get a wild card spot, but the Panthers did not the Redskins got the other one.

So all and all. The way the playoff race looked after week 6 last year was pretty close to how it was at the end of the season.

To be fair, even though I was being a smartass with my earlier post, the Patriots have one fewer game played than many of the other teams, which gives them a half-game edge over the 3-3 teams.

There are no 4-2 teams in the AFC other than Denver, who'd be in as a division winner. There are, however, two 3-3 teams who are behind the 3-3 Jets, Patriots and Colts by that 1/2 game.

I understand your point (optimism). It just doesn't apply here because I was strictly talking raw numbers and the 4-2 issue doesn't enter the picture.

We all understand your point: The Pats are not nearly as bad off as the doomsayers are crying about.

The fact that we are a playoff team means that we have a better record than most AFC teams.

What you are missing is the will and deetermination of those who live for gloom.

You will get a lot of responses from people who cannot accept that we are better than most teams, and will say things, like YEAH BUT.

YEAH BUT the season is young

YEAH BUT the situation can change

YEAH BUT it is no guarantee

YEAH BUT whatever

These are the same people, of course, who would scream from the rooftops if we had a losing record. ... Come to think of it, they are screaming from the rooftops now.

Great post. I think I disagree with the 'enjoy associating with a winner' part though. At least for all of the naysayers.
I think its more a case of having an outlet for the frustration in their lives. If the Pats win, they find some joy, if they lose, or don't win perfectly, all of the frustration in their lives can be aimed at the Pats. I think a lot of people who are failures in life want to hold a sports team to an unbelievably high standard (i.e. one they wish they possessed themselves.) The posts about lack of effort, the players not trying, or the indiginity of losing IMO are all cases of transfering their own failures to the sports team. For example if I am failing in my job, and I watch the Patriots lose a game and decide that they lost because they didnt care, and there was a total lack of effort, I feel better about my own failure. I think that is a driving force in the naysayers: My life sucks, so I need to take it out on someone, and this Ian dude created a nice safe place for me to come and do it.

Haven't you been paying attention? The posters on this board have ruled. This team will be lucky to win 8 games, they suck at everything.
How dare you bring something as ridiculously irrelevant as won-loss record into the discussion.

We all know that even though the Pats have a better record than most teams, they are worse than all but only the 3 they have beaten.
If we played all 31 teams we would be 3-28, we are only 3-2 because of the luck of the draw.
