I can't believe the negativity on this board (football side too). Baseball is a game where the best teams lose 4 out of 10 games. One bad game, even one bad play, will cause a few spoiled kneejerk frontrunners here to say how much Varitek or Lester or Papi or Beckett sucks, This happened in '04 when we were behind 3-0 to the Yankees too.

Only NY and Philly rival the New England "fans" for negativity and whining. And they haven't had anywhere near the success Boston teams have had in this decade. You think things are terrble here? Try living in Buffalo or Cleveland or Philly.

I think the Sox can still win ths series. If they don't, I'll give credit to Tampa for a terrific rags to riches story, and not tear down my team which has brought us so many great moments.

(And the anonymous a-hole who gives every thread one star can do the same to this if you think it validates your whining negativity.)

I would feel much better if Ortiz showed some life or this team.Last night was abysmal. This team played dead.No matter if they win or lose, i wanna see some damn fight in this team tonight, they might be playing for their season because i just dont know if we can come back down 3-1 against this rays team.

I like Wake pitching tonight. Even if he gives up a number of runs and the Sox win, a knuckleballer can really mess with a batters rhythm. Then the Rays would face Dice K, who seems to confuse them. Followed up by Beckett, who you hope is on, and possibly Lester, who you doubt would have back to back bad games. I remember back in 2004 when the Sox were down 0-3 and told my cousin, with that staff they still could win.

I agree, the team looked dead.. when's the last time you heard Fenway so quiet during a Sox PLAYOFF game?? I don't think anyone's complained about Lester.. it's the first game he's lost at Fenway since April.. Varitek DOES stink, Papi's bat has been dead all post-season, and I don't know what's wrong with Beckett, but I don't expect to see the guy we're all used to seeing.
Boston fans are honest, and they're not going to just sit here and wave their pom-poms.. Obviously everyone is rooting for them, and we watch and go to the games.. Just because people are critical.. what's wrong with that? </Neumy>

Thanks D-Money , Scout & CM for honest replies. I don't mind criticism. The team and none of us are perfect. It's just the fans who think we have to win every time or else we suck who bother me. Remember last year when Pedroia started slow, there were several here who said he'd never make it in the majors.

As for Tek, I'm not sure he should come back, especially at high cost. But a few months ago SI had a player poll (they couldn't vote for their own teammates) who named Varitek the 4th best catcher in baseball. And nobody here has said who a better replacement would be from FA or the Sox organization.

Remember, only 4 teams make it to the LCS. 28 teams are home watching on the tube. If we don't make it all the way, we're still better off than 87% of all teams, including the Angels and Cubs. who had better records. Let's enjoy it while we can and thank God we don't live in Houston, or God forbid, Washington DC.

I'm sure if Tek comes back, it will be at a high cost.. remember, his agent is Borassss.. Almost every serious Sox fan I know can't stand Varitek (one of my co-workers beats on him regularly in this forum).. But, I do think there's something to be said for what all the other players and managers think of the guy (I also read where the Yankees GM Cashman was asked if he had the option of removing one player from the Red Sox roster, who would it be? He picked Varitek). However, can you think of one clutch hit he's had in recent memory? Go through the lineup, and I can think of at least a few big plays each of them has had in a big situation in late innings.. I can't say that for Varitek.. He is, to put it mildly, WOEFUL at the plate. And he needs to stick to batting right-handed..

No whining from me, the Rays are a better team, end of story. Younger, better hitters, better pitching, better manager. Better everything accept for fans, a bunch of band wagon frauds they are.

.194 as a team in the post season is not going to get it done; they have four automatic outs in the line up right now (Ellsbury, Ortiz, Varitek, Lowrie/Cora) and looked dead last night.

The season rests on Wakefields shoulders and the last time he faced the Rays, he got raked bigtime.

2008 Tampa Bay Doofin Rays, World Series Champions.

Makes me want to puke.

At least the Giants got their azzes handed to them last night and Eli looked like dog sh!t, the effin goober that he is.

The one thing i wanna see tonight is Francona making quick decisions. If Wakefield doesnt have it, dont stay too long with him!!

Better be paying attention, back to back bombs from Wakefield.
This is pathetic.

Well this is a good start.

What a pathetic series this has turned out to be.****ty pitching and hitting. This team has given up.Here comes the sweep at home.

I get the feeling Ortiz' wrist is hurting him more than he or the team is letting on. It's as if he's guessing what kind of pitch it will be while the pitcher is in his windup, and if he guesses wrong there's no way he can adjust his swing.

I'll be curious to see how much Boras wants for Tek to re-sign. His numbers have been pretty bad the last two years and he's got to be about the oldest starting catcher in baseball now. On the other hand, catchers worthy of starting are even more scarce than good starting pitching; who would the Sox go with if he walks?

I dont want Wakefield on this team anymore either, Byrd, goodbye.Try and sign a 4th starter.

Well ... it's 9:59 and the Sox are down 10-1.

I'm in the On Demand section of Cox Cable looking for a good movie ... perhaps a good tear jerker for tonight. :bricks:

What a bummer.

We really missed Manny's bat.
That's why everyone's noticed Teks underwhelming stats.
Manny is gone now but we got 2 World Series with him so...

But no one wanted him.

These Devil Rays are hot. I don't think anyone's going to stop them. If it's Phillies-Devil Rays should be a high=scoring series.

The rays are a great team but we are making them look like world beaters. Our pitching has been atrocious but our hitting even more atrocious. The phillies will put up a stinking fight.

Wow, a back-handed compliment, what else is new around here. Dude, they won the AL East, it's not like theyt got here by luck.

im proud of these sox. with everything they have had to deal with they went farther than most teams would have. they have a list of injuries a mile long. it aint over yet though. they were down last year 3 to 1. there is plenty of time to cry if and when they lose a fourth game. if they do lose it has zero to do with manny.
