We are 3-2. OK, I get it, that's not 5-0. But its not 0-5 either.
We have lost twice, in games where we progressively played worse as the game unfloded and we were playing frm behind.

We have played FIVE games we have ELEVEN left.
Why am I seeing fairweather fans writing off the season?

Why am I seeing the same fans who watched the Pats start 2005 even worse than they have started 2008 then said we were screwed in the playoffs and playing better than any team in the NFL, now saying this season is over?

Why is it that fans turn on this team (saying we suck and the season is over is turning on the team) when it is no longer arguable as an iron-clad favorite?
Why would fans not stay supportive of a team that is 3-2, one game out of first place, has 68% of its season left to play?

I'm sitting here saying if we can beat Denver at home, we should be able to beat the Rams, then its us vs the also 3-2 Colts, for us to be either 6-2 or 5-3 at the halfway point, and the rest of the so-called fans on this board are giving up on the season. I don't get it.

Hasn't anyone been paying attention? Hasn't anyone noticed that, we have had severe defieciencies, just like every team has, in Championship years, and corrected them. Why would we not want to give Bill Belichick the opportunity to take the next 3 months to correct these, before proclaiming hopelessness.

I also forgot to add the thought put out last week (I dont remember by who on this board)
the dynsaty started as a 5-5 team with a franchise QB injured, an unknown kid startingnin his place, and very low expectations.

In 2001, fans were pushing each other out of the way to say they were just happy to make the playoffs. In 2008, they are pushing each other out of the way to say 2 bad losses is more than they can bear,

Last year brought in lots of new fans who think this sucks. Comparatively, that's true.

But it's also the world we live in. Easier to root for the teams that are rolling through the season. It's not instantly satisfying to root for a team that has to work for every win.

We like stuff to be NOW and ASSURED. Quick fix. Instant answers. And we LOVE to be right more than anything in the world, even it it makes us out to be a jacka$s.

I don't think it's odd that on an internet forum where the average age is maybe 35 or less (which fits my demographic too) and those people see the world through the internet more than any other way (usually) we're so divisive. We have no relational stock in one another and probably most of us have never seen the Pats play live.

Much of the backlash might be the heat the bandwagoners take from long-term fans of other teams who know things like "any given Sunday" and realize teams and people perform inconsistently as a result of of the humanness of the game.

I have a friend who's been a Dolphins fan FOREVER. Still a fan. And if he can stick it out this long, so can I.

Just my opinion on it.

3-2 is just the result of willingly shifting the Charger's momentum so we could embarrass them again later on in the season.

For me, it isn't that we lost that's such a big deal. I even said last night that the result didn't bother me THAT much. It was the way in which we played with the defense looking old, slow, tired, and unmotivated. The OL doing it's best impression of a strainer so that Cassel couldn't properly set his feet and throw and had to run for his life against what had been one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL up until last night. It was the play calling especially in the red zone. That we lost was not a big deal to most people. We played a superior team that wasn't nearly as ravaged with injuries as we are. But we looked as pathetic as any Pats team that I've seen since '01 (and that includes the '05 version). And believe me, I'm not a fairweather or bandwagon fan.

EDIT: And let me just remind everyone that I was about to travel to San Diego to witness this. Thank God I took the money and not the tickets.

Tom Brady Perhaps?

I mean, in 05 we KNEW what we had in our QB, a 3 time superbowl winner who is cool under pressure. Right now that's an unknown. Sure Brady had bad games, but he always bounced back with a good if not great game.

I don't think the season is over, but i could also see the pats playing .500 for the rest of the season.

Fact: Before the seasons started, the majority of fans said this team was not going to have a season like they had last year. Many predicted 12-4, 13-3 with Brady. Once Brady went down, people's expectations are now all over the board but in reality it was not going to be as good as if Brady were in there.

Fact: Before the season started, the majority of fans agreed that one of the 3-4 losses the Patriots would sustain would be to the Chargers on the road on a back to back West coast game and to a pissed off team that wanted to prove something.

Fact: Before this game, the majority of fans agreed that the Chargers were playing with their backs to the wall and needed this game more than the Pats.

With all these facts, I really don't understand why it seems that the majority of fans have now done a complete 360 on their initial expectations and why they're acting so shocked and suprised that a Brady-less team lost to a playoff quality team on the road.

Because Cassel has not been able to pass consistently for more than 10 yards in his 5th game as QB and you don't win games if you can't pass deep - 5 yard outs may moves the chains every once in a while but you need to soften defenses by making them respect the long pass -

No long pass = Defensive pressure non stop and Cassel will eventually get annihilated behind the right side of this worthless OL

Plus the secondary is scaring no one - Rivers took his first pass deep which shows how much they thought it was easy to pick on O'Neal all game,other teams will do the same

to help the Pats get over a crushing defeat. Matt Cassel isn't any Tom

Dude, the team was 18-1 last year and was historically badass. This year they got creamed by the Dolphins and the star QB got his knee torn up by the Hermies. Of course some fans will lose interest.

Two great plays by Jammer messed up two long passes last night, and 2001 called to remind you that Brady couldn't throw deep back then.

To be honest, I don't see people writing off the season as much as complaining about getting smoked by Norv Turner of all people.

We still don't know how things will turn out, but beating SF means nothing, and losing to a weakened San Diego team doesn't bode well. Anybody trying to predict the future, though, well, good luck with that.

Keep in mind that BB defense has looked suspect in the past and gotten better as the season wore on. Will things improve offensively is a question mark with a new QB but give it time, we have the talent at WR/RB and though this line has been bad the last 6 meaningful games, we know how its capable of playing. Wait till the end of the season to panic if we still havent improved.

i keep going back to the 2005 season, we sucked as adefense with duane starks, got blown out at denver. We went on a win one lose one stretch until the end and ended up in a AFC div game.

I'm boring. I believe Bill Belichick has proven he's a pretty good coach. For me you give him some leeway. I think he knows more than the bbs posters who all have a new plug-n-play replacement for every player who has a bad game (either from the picked-over free agent ranks, or from our own bench.)

I'm okay if they swap in O'Connell next week. I'm okay if it's Cassel through week 16. I'm okay if they like Redman (though that one seems unlikely.)

Like I said I'm boring. Huge props to Andy. We're not 0-5, we're 3-2. Guess what? We ain't the elite of the NFL. We're trying to win the winnable ones, and buy time.

I wasn't the only one here who thought the Chargers weren't done last year when they started 1-4. I'm not the only one here, I trust, who think the Giants look scarier than they are right now. I'm not the only one who thought we could beat the colts in those years they started every season with 10+ wins.

I will guarantee you this: The end of this season will look very different from the beginning of this season. I like to think we'll be part of what changes, and for the better.

That's information in a vacuum. You need to look at every season. But even so, the past has no bearing on what will happen this season.

Is it bad? Hell no! The pats under BB have notoriously started slow and picked up steam (save last year) and were always playing best at the end of the season. I expect the same this year.

But, in 4 of those years Tom Brady was our QB. In 01 he was still unknown, I will agree with that. That's where I personally believe the comparisons with the 01 brady led team and the 08 cassel lead team end
