They are lights out, a vast improvement over last year. The Ghost is truly amazing.

Seriously though, I think the O-Line is getting a bit better and could make a big jump shortly. But who gets the axe?

I think 3 things need to happen to go 1 loss per quarter:

Continue improving on the OLine. They looked shaky a few times yesterday but did a nice job eliminating errors when it counted.

Continue to force teams to accept the deep ball as a legitimate threat. Even though the interception sucked, I think the long toss to Moss near the end zone was effective in forcing the 49ers to realize we're not afraid to go deep.

Special teams giving us prime ball position. Nothing else to say here except here's hoping they continue.

It's not really asking a lot. With the talent on the team/coaching staff 12 and 4 or better isn't out of the question.

As much as I doubted Cassel and thought he would be cut, he's getting it done. He had a nice bounce back game against the 9ers. I couldn't watch the game but it seems like the defense played a little better. However, I'm worried about the O-line giving up so many sacks. Is it Cassel just not getting rid of the ball or is the O-line breaking down right after the snap? I like the stable of backs the Pats have. They can keep guys fresh which will help during the course of the game. Since 99.9% of NFL teams really suck right now, I haven't lost hope on this team. If Cassel can just manage the game, the Pats can have a successful season. Also, the defense needs to play lights out from week to week.

Agree with your analysis but you might be jumping the gun on these statements. On D we know Mayo's a keeper. Hopefully Guyton turns into the next BB genius finding, whether at ILB or OLB. They will have three huge holes to fill in Rodney, Vrabel and Bruschi.next year. Hopefully they can all stay healthy this year and they can get decent production out of Rodney and Vrabes next season.

First, good for you leting observed facts modify your opinion. I was much more negative on Cassel this summer than I am today. Still not confident though.

I do think that several sacks were Cassel's inexperienced fault, holding the ball too long. Agree with Boomer that a sack is better than a TO but I think Cassel needs more playing time to make pocket awareness more automatic. Throwing the ball away in the right (bad ) situation was a Brady trademark.

I agree with you and mg that despite my concerns about Maroney's day, I like our stable of backs, even if Lamont goes down, as long as the rest stay healthy. We even have a backup RB worth developing on the PS.

Cassel is getting better at his progressions through his reads, but he still isn't quick enough, and that IMHO is what is causing the sacks. Experience will help. He isn't zoning in on one receiver anymore. Many times yesterday he was able to look off the defenders prior to releasing the pass. I like the kid, he's got moxie, he's going to be all right.

I got a call from a Steeler fan today. His comments were,
" Do you mean to tell me, he never started a game in college?"
"That's amazing, how in the world did the Pats find him?"
"If the Pats can scout QBs like this, first Brady, a 6th rounder, and now Cassel, a kid who no one even looked at, somebody needs to be following the Pats scouts."

News Flash: We won the game!

Despite all the whining and pleas to the heavens, the fact remains that the Pats won that game against the 49ers. Yes there were times that the secondary looked terrible, yes Cassel threw some picks, and yes Jordan got hurt. But a win is a win is a win. You don't think that BB hasn't looked at all those plays under a microscope and seen all the flaws that this team has? I'm sure he's aware of it. And if he's as smart as people say, he will be working with the team to correct their mistakes.

IMO he has a hell of a lot of coaching to do. But as of today the Pats are 3-1 and I am pretty confident they can go to 4-1 against a declining Chargers team that looks poorly coached despite all the talent that they have. In the end we're going to have to say in BB we trust. This team has a lot of work but considering the transition to a Brady-less offense, I'll take 3-1 any day. Go ahead and start the flames but that's how I see it.

This is great stuff! I would add:

1) Maroney is a beast we are just saving him for December when we need to sustain a running game. While we are at it, we should probably mention that we are "saving" our best O line blocking as well.

2) Don't forget to add Chad Jackson on the shadow roster!

Every young QB is going to have ups and downs. Sunday was an up for Cassel. As fans, we can't live and die on one good or one bad game that Cassell has. Experience is the best teacher.

The secondary has NO play makers in it. And will not have any for the rest of the season.

Can the LBers develop into a special group? The DL is special, the secondary weak. If the LBers grow and develop into playmakers, we could have a really strong defense. How long before Guyton passes Mayo on the depth chart?

Vrabel and Bruschi aren't going anywhere next year. How many reps they have is another question. Both can be part of 3 or 4 man rotations. I'd pick up another ILB, but then I would have doen that this year.

The bigger question is at safety where both Sanders and Harrison are free agents. If Harrison wants to stay, I'm fine with that. He certainly can be a fine #3.

Also, Chambers and Tomlinson left yesterday's game with injuries. Chambers had to be carted off, after trying to score but getting stonewalled at the goal line. Right now, Merriman is out for the season, Gates isn't at 100%, and Tomlinson and Chambers are both either not going to play or won't be anywhere near 100%. This Chargers team has been almost as decimated by injuries as we have (as far as I'm concerned, losing Brady is equivalent to losing about 3 all-pros at another position).
