More questions on the quarterback - Boston.com

.at least iam ...surprised by reiss's reaction to some of the questions.

I go way back as a Pats fan. Season ticket holder when they played at Harvard. So I have seen a lot. My question is about Brady. Do you think he has lost some of his drive for football? He has done it all. One last thing, where is he, in New York with his girlfriend. Why is he not on the sidelines? From the outside looking in, it seems to me that he has lost that drive we saw earlier on -- i.e. for the first time not taking part in the offseason voluntary training program. It all does not add up to me.

A: I've asked the same question, GJ, although I don't have the answer. When I see those gossip-based web videos - like the recent one on TMZ - I wonder why Brady is spending time in New York. It just doesn't look right. I don't think he should be on the sidelines, however, as I feel that is counterproductive to getting his knee back to full health. I also believe that after years of touting the importance of the offseason program, it was surprising that Brady didn't take part in it this year.

Simple: he set the bar too high. Now, he can't even take some "me" time while rehabbing his season-ending knee injury without people questioning his drive.

It's stupid, but that's the way it is.

Harrison rehabbed from his knee injury at home in Atlanta. He even did a tv appearance from there and I don't recall anyone questioning him or his drive.

I am as big a Reiss fan as there is - but he's been on this "Brady's committment to the game" issue for far too long, and its silly. For starters, O'Connel & Cassel have both said Brady is still watching film with them, we know he's in all the QB meetings - and this specific NYC trip came during a bye week.

But perhaps even more importantly, the guy is a human being who has a life outside of his work - like every other regular guy, and every other NFL player. The only difference is that Brady just happens to date a super model and be a bit of a celebrity himself - so his personal life and what he does with his free time is open to the public.

I do think Brady is spending less of his off time here than he usually did, but I don't think it is time to press the panic button. We still don't know if he really has lost his dedication to the game. When he is in Foxboro, he may be the same film rat he has always been.

I would rather have him in Foxboro while waiting for surgery helping out Cassel, but he does live in NY during the offseason and most players go home after getting IRed at least until it is time to start rehab. We shouldn't assign Brady some higher standard than the rest of the league on this one.

If Brady decides to spend his entire rehab process in NY or LA, then we can start questioning things. But if he is spending at least 4-5 days a week in Foxboro when he starts rehabbing, who cares if he flies to NY for the weekends?

Brady has a unique opportunity to see more of his son and to recharge his mental battery DURING an NFL season. Carpe Diem for now and he'll be ready next summer for the grind.

It would be nice to see him on the sidelines at least once in awhile. You dont have to be in the game to lead.

I am not exactly sure there is much value to it. And he may just get in the way and cause more problems. He is not a coach, he is a player. And while there is plenty of insight to the game he can offer I think it is best to do that in the QB meetings and film sessions. On game day between series the time is limited and it is probably best if they don't have to may cooks in the kitchen. For eveytiem Tom would be a help there would be other times when the OC or other coaches say one thing and Tom says another. Example in 01 on the final drive Weiss told Brady to be careful and Drew said F that go out there and sling it. All ended well so no biggie (actually a good biggie) but what if he went out and slung it to the other team? Answer: Drew would be criticized for that comment if it ever got out...in fact people would probably blame him.

how do we know what his schedule is ? so he goes to la and nyc . whats the big deal ? he has a life. he cant contribute anything when players are running out there practicing . he contributes to team meetings supposedly even though it isnt publicized via reiss's blog. We have a whole coaching staff led by BB to manage the ship and lead.
i sometimes cant believe we question a guy who played through a seperated shoulder,sports hernia, foot knee injuries , took less money to stay here, played with a average receiver core of caldwell and gabriel and the one time he is injured and shows up in nyc or is not in foxboro to win the damn parking spot for off season workout to not being on the sideline - everything is questioned.
i wont be completely surprised if down the yrs if (god forbid) brady leaves the pats to play elsewhere , some of the media and even some posters here i might say will turn around and claim the same thing - he has lost his drive,overrated etc etc..

sorry if i offended anyone..it just pissed me off... guy's got a life .let him be.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Mike's access (if it ever really amounted to that - more like being fed the official news first as a courtesy because he wasn't out there dropping dimes for juicy scoops) is gonna start dwindling. Nobody is happy as a beat reporter anymore - must pay 12 cents an hour or something. Everyone wants to be a judgemental "columnist" and multi-mediot/critic. I had hope for Mike because I like the facts and can form my own opinion from them... But he's going the way they all do. Maybe because when you're raised around here you just inherently believe you know more about team sports from carefully observing them at a distance than some guys who have played or coached them at the highest levels and successfully for decades...

The Gutierrez/O'Connell love fest is almost comical at this stage. And I get the feeling if Cassel remains the starter this season it will represent that first big slap for Mike, the one they all come to hold against Bill at some point for not helping them do their job or for (somehow misleading and) making them look foolish...

I'm not ready to take it as far as you are here - b/c I still have a lot of respect for Mike Reiss & Gasper. But between the Brady-personal life crap and the O'Connell/Gutierrez/complete dismissal of Matt Cassel crap, I agree the Globe is starting to veer away from what has made it one of the better sources of Patriots reporting the past few years - by reporting the facts and giving reasonable and responsible, not excessive or self-indulgent, analysis.

I will never forgive this town if we run him out.

On some level I've concluded we eventually run them all out. Been going on for as long as there's been a sports media in this town... They sour them on us and visa versa...

I remember back in the late 90's when Nomar and Pedro were incredibly carrying a collection of dirt dogs to the playoffs and building the foundation of Red Sox Nation they now charge membership fees for, and someone cavalierly telling me this town would one day be turned against Nomar, and I said at the time no way, not that kid... LOL

If Belichick has Brady on the sidelines ever this season, he should have his head examined. All you gotta do is look at Charlie Weis to see that you don't want Brady with a bum knee standing on the sidelines.

Hey at least we didn't run Pedro out. He was to injury prone at the time to resign.

I still have love for Nomar and feel bad the way he was the scapegoat to pre-championship failures by the coincidence we won when he was traded.

Pedro though is at another level though. I love Pedro to this day as much as any Sox that ever wore the uni.

Many, actually probably most, sports fans don't like players. They don't like the money they make. They do like their teams. No matter what a player has done for their team, the minute he does something they consider to be not in the best interest of their team, they turn on the player.

Many, actually probably most, sports fans don't like players. They don't like the money they make. They do like their teams. No matter what a player has done for their team, the minute he does something they consider to be not in the best interest of their team, they turn on the player.

I think that is true on some level but I also believe the media ego in this town (and on the East Coast in general) dislikes it even more and drives that resentment home and that is why they cultivate and play favorites and develop agendas they transfer on to an easily led fanbases. The media once upon a time used to travel in the same social circles as players - they drank and whored and whatever together on the road. The big money changed all that, and the relationship changed as a result. Today the sports media is so competitive it's almost impossible for players to have a relationship with the media because discretion went out the window as print media jobs evaporated and the need to deliver ratings based scoops just to stay employed increased.
