O'Connell could be ready in a snap - The Boston Globe

"It has kind of been talked about that they want to try to get me in," said O'Connell, "hopefully, when we're up by a lot, just because every snap I can get in there is a plus for me as far as learning and continuing to grow."
iam sure BB will have a word about a rookie giving too much info.

This same media kiss helped Gutierrez too...

Good article. Seeing what McDaniels says about scouting O'connell, and what O'Connell says about the ways the QBs on this team have gone about their business reminds me again of why I respect this team so much.

Interesting comment by Gaspar about the the Pats possibly using O'Connell situationally in the red zone.

Gasper made the same point before; I'm still not sold on the idea.

Taking Cassel out of the red zone surely wouldn't do much for his confidence.

The Pats need to score TDs and not FGs in the redzone. If it helps them score more, I'm fine with them using 2 QBs. KO can make things happen with his feet if protection breaks down. Can you say the same for Cassel? But this is all just speculation so far. I'll believe it when I see it, however it does make some sense.

Yeah, I'm sure no one would have guessed that they might want to get O'Connell some snaps here and there. . . . :)

Right, especially seeing that the OL is porous and could get the starter KOed on any play. O'C NEEDS to be ready.

Actually, yeah - you can if you actually paid attention a couple of seasons ago. This isn't college, despite Miami's antics last week. Bill said last week O'Connell was just in there for mop up snaps because they benefit backups.

this coming weekend is make or break for cassel in my opinion.......

I think O'C feels the same way:cool: That was an interesting interview on a couple of levels.

Although some have contended that there was NO WAY that O'Connell could be ready to serve as the #2 QB this year, let alone the potential starter, I think the most important aspect to all of this is the confidence that Belichick has in ALL his backups...

That each of them is deemed a better option for the team than some unnamed, unknown veteran - which of course they are.

Now all that being said, fans shouldn't read too much into that either... Cassell wasn't necessarilly deemed the best backup QB available in the pre-season - he was simply deemed the best QB for the salary value that Belichick places on a backup QB... which isn't all that much.

Better backup QBs could have been had in the offseason, and could have been integrated in the system - for the right price... but Belichick was willing to gamble (as he has for most of Brady's career) that the backup QB would never be necessary - thus little reason to pay a premium price.

It's pointless to second guess that decision, but in hindsight, as with our WR situation when Branch sat out and was traded, it would be more helpful to have a more seasoned and talented QB who understands the system... but there's no use crying over torn ACLs. We'll just have to play the cards we've been dealt.
