Logan Mankins ... When/Will/How Much - to Resign Him.

So does Mankins get resigned before the season is out ... with an aging Matt Light and a weak right side of the line I think Mankins will go for huge $$$ to resign right now. Without the Light-Mankins-Koppen trio things could get worse before they get better.

Steve Hutchinson got 7 years, 49 mil, 16 guaranteed.

And the cap is higher now than when he signed that deal.

I doubt the Pats would go that high, but you have to figure it's going to take at least 40 mil, 10 guaranteed.

That contract is the standard for guards. Mankins is up there. Considering the cap has gone up since that deal was signed, he's going to come in with demands somewhere up there.

I was surprised this past draft that Belichick didn't grab a big OG and move Mankins to RT. then again ... the O'Connell pick would not have happened so pick your poison I guess... right now I like the O'Connell pick.

I was surprised this past draft that Belichick didn't grab a big OG and move Mankins to RT. then again ... the O'Connell pick would not have happened so pick your poison I guess... right now I like the O'Connell pick.

Oddly I like it less now... There was a run on OL early last draft that likely took signigicant value off the Patriots board. That said, if they upgraded that line there is the possibility that things unfold even in game 1 that preclude Brady going down. Just before he did he absorbed the first of what was again projecting to be many hits (knock downs hurt the QB just as much as sacks...). And if he returns on schedule O'Connell may never see the field in his 3 remaining years here, much like the guy he's backing up today...unless of course Tom gets knocked down one more time too many.

But that's just me...I been sayin' that for 2-3 years now through sports hernias, lis francs, probably shoulders. If you watch the Colts now, over and above regressing on D, you see what an insufficiently protected HOF QB results in. Still surrounded by his elite (skill) weapons but unable to effectively utilize them absent what was for 2-3 years one of the best overall OL's in the business. When you pass to run and you still can't run, the problem likely begins and ends at the LOS.

There is definitely something going on with the line, although it is tough to tell if the result is a product of injuries (players banged up but not sufficiently injured to report), execution, ability or scheming. I am hoping the Super Bowl did not expose some flaw (the analysis seems to point to an off game) in the line, but Dante Scarnecchia has long been regarded as a master coach so the hope is he can address any problem.

Mankins has been a beast, and guards are always more highly coveted than tackles (having a big D-line blow up the middle creates problems running backs and TEs cannot readily address; edge rushers off tackles can be dealt with those extra blockers). Neal is good when he is healthy, which I hope is some of the problem right now, but Mankins holds higher regards and will command a big payday if he is not willing to go the Patriot way. It will be interesting to see how the Patriots organization handle resigning him and the d-line.

Mankins is just one of several players who will be in the last year of their contract next year. The contracts for Wilfork, Seymour, Green and several others are all up at the same time.

This team needs at RT more than a LG, IMO. Kaczur is terrible. If Mankins can move to RT, or to LT with Light going to RT, then he might be worth a big contract. If he stays at LG, you have too much money tied up in an offensive line w/o a decent RT. But you think that they would have tried that this summer if they thought it was a viable option, especially after O'Callaghan got hurt.

Logan Mankins plays a really good game almost all the time,one of the more consistent guys we have. You don't hear a lot of off-field stuff about him and he's not in the camera all the time either. I hope we do what we have to to keep him. Light's been sort of an enigma-or at least inconsistent.

I agree though- this OL will probably get a long, hard look going into next season. It might be time to start injecting a couple of younger, less battered bodies in there for the long haul.

One question for me is if the Pats target SILB as a need, wanting to stick another nice young stud next to Mayo. But maybe Guyton is that guy? I think he might be. He has the size for it, and ridiculous speed. He was great in preseason, and the fact that he beat out Hobson and almost instantly was #2 on the depth chart at the position says something (well, and maybe says something about Hobson).

Plus, the Pats have shown this season that they'll take a (non-Jerod Mayo) ILB off the field on passing downs. More often than not, they've been a 3-3-5 in passing situations. In the Jets game we saw a dime package that had 6 DBs, 4 on the line (2 pure DLs + 2 OLBs [AD & Vrabel]) & 1 ILB (Mayo). Either way, since we use these packages probably 25-35% of the plays (guesstimate), it might reduce the need to draft a Bruschi replacement. Of course, that % also goes up when Brady is back and we're back to being ahead by 2-3 TDs midway through games.

If there is no agreement on a new CBA, Mankins is not an unrestricted free agent -- that's one of the terms in the CBA. Unrestricted free agency is not granted at four years under the uncapped terms, as I (weakly) understand it.

Thus, while his contract is up, he would be a restricted free agent under that scenario.

If a new CBA is signed, then to some extent that would define the competitive context for a Mankins contract.
