OT: Lombardi says Jets have internal second guessing

Of course this must be obvious, and of course the term second guessing should happen in any organization (or at least, analysis of what one has done - guessing is a bad business to be in). But Mike Lombardi says there is some internal, um, conflict over how to run the offense.

The Jets aren't scoring much and perhaps they are learning that Favre is a bit of a square peg to their round hole. Schottenheimer seems to be in a bad spot though: Lombardi encourages him to do what he thinks is right, but how will that fit into the team concept?

This is pretty much what I have thought all along about their off-season. That said, if the Jets are making off-the-field decisions to the detriment of their on-the-field performance:

1) That is great news for us
2) If they continue to do it, then that is even better news for us
3) It confirms they currently have intrusive, bottom-line oriented ownership, which rarely works out

You mean they are finally figuring out what many of us knew all along? They just aren't that good. Acquiring names is not neccessarily improving the team.

It is all well good to get a Brett Favre, but acquiring a QB a month before the season who is more reputation than production at this point isn't going to make your team better until November or December if ever.

Assuming DeBrickishaw Ferguson sucks because he doesn't have a guard next to him like Faneca rather than accepting the reality that he is a bust, is also a big mistake.

I saw the Jets as a 7-9 team before the season. Now I think that may be a really good season for them. I never got the bandwagon jumping for this team. I wouldn't be surprised if they finish in fourth place in the division.

I have to imagine Favre will get more comfortable with the offense, and as that happens the Jets will improve drastically. Id rather be in their situation (have a QB who i know can make things happen) than ours. But, thats why we play. We need Cassel to step up and continue to improve every week. Hopefully BB and McDaniel will open the offense up a little bit in the coming weeks. the bye week definitely came at a perfect time which is funny because i figured all offseason the placement of the bye would be a detriment to us.

I still don't see the Jets winning more than 7 games. Favre should be comfortable with the offense by late October at this rate. Favre joined the Jets far too late to grasp the offense until late in the season.

I would rather have our situation. We have a far better defense. Favre is too much of a gambler and can put the defense in a rough situation. The Jets can't run the ball. They aren't scoring more points than the Pats.

The Jets got the 2005-2006 Favre and that is a pretty mediocre QB.

I don't see Favre quitting during the season. He would look like the world's biggest arse if he did. I can see him getting into a confrontational relationship with Mangini and Schottenheimer though. He does have a tendency of trying to play Head Coach/GM.

Every time I see an interview with Favre these days, I swear there's a little thought balloon coming out of his head that says "i can't believe i did this, my teammates hate me, my coaches don't appreciate me, everybody in green bay hates me, aaron rodgers isn't sucking, i'm totally miserable here, and i have to keep dragging my butt out there for the rest of the season or risk death threats from jets fans for the rest of my life."

I actually think the Jets still have a chance to pull themselves together and win some games, but that doesn't change the above...I really believe their QB wishes he were someplace else.

I'm right there with you. To the chagrin of Jets fans, I said (before the season started) that the moves the Jets made would set the team back 3-5 years. First, the salary is an issue. Next, if these moves don't work and Mangini is fired, another coach would have to come in and he'd probably implement new schemes meaning these big names they have signed in the offseason would probably have to go. On top of that, Brett Favre will probably retire at the end of this year if things don't improve meaning the search for a quarterback will be ongoing once again.

On a side note, I will laugh hysterically when Mangini is fired.

Putting aside my hatred of the Jets, I think its natural that there would be second guessing, and natural that there would be offensive growing pains.

The Jets gameplan should be making the playoffs and peaking then. With a new QB coming into an offense assembled around a different QB, any team would start with a limited number of offensive plays, focusing on getting good at a few before adding others.

Both the QB and the other players on offense would need to adapt over the weeks of the season.

The hope would be that everything comes together by the playoffs.

But from a practical standpoint this means potentially taking a step backwards before moving forward. That was a big risk for MangIdiot but I don't think he had any choice - and now more than ever he needs to have a monster post season to save his job and career.

I disagree that Mangini and Tannenbaum didn't have a choice. Of course they had a choice. What happened was that last offseason they did very little thinking they were only a player or two away from competiting with the Pats for the division. When the season blew up in their faces, they overracted and took the Daniel Snyder approach (an approach that even Snyder has realized doesn't work) by going out and buying a team.

I think this will blow up in their faces even worse because expectations for the Jets are as high as they ever were with talk about playoffs and Super Bowls. Jets fans thought the loss of Brady meant an automatic bid for the AFC East Title for the Jets.

The Jets would have been better off making half the moves they did. Will Faneca, Jenkins, Favre, or Woody even be around when the Jets become real players for the Super Bowl (if they ever do). Jenkins and Favre hindered the growth process since both cost picks to acquire. I would have never done what the Jets did this offseason.
