David Yudkin is a poster on footballguys.com and he's a pretty reputable source of information about the Patriots - he's been pretty spot on with most of his information. This is what he had to say about the Patriots starting QB situation:
David Yudkin said:
I asked around about this yesterday, and there is no simple answer.

I was told that the Pats internally are reconsidering their position that Cassel will be the starting QB the entire season. I was also told that the Pats would potentially be interested in an impact QB not a game manager type, so if someone were to become available at a reasonable cost both in acquisition costs and pay scale wise that they would consider making a move. When I asked specifically about Bulger I was told that anything is possible but was not told "no, they aren't looking into it." So as far as Bulger to the Pats, I would say it is a consideration. I doubt the math translates into 50/50, but we'll see.

I also have heard that Cassel may effectively be holding the fort down until O'Connell ramps up and is available to take over starting duties in a few weeks if the Pats don't acquire someone else. If the Pas continue to only score in the teens, I'd say O'Connell will be the starter a month from now.

Interesting. Maybe the Jeff Garcia rumors could have legs - or the O'Connell crowd could be getting what they're wishing for soon.

Yes, Bulger, the same guy that signed a $65 million deal last year?

He said they aren't looking into it. What's with the ?

Interesting thought, but I would guess the cap numbers would make this deal prohibitive. Bulger has been lousy for over a year now, so I am not sure what he has left. If it were possible though, it would be interesting to see him play for us.

Because it is an obviously stupid option.

What a dumb statement by Yudkin. He raises the Bulger issue. Pats say no and he goes on to say it's a consideration. On what basis other than his imagination? Cretin!

Interesting........

Hey BriZ are you out there? You are a genius........

You'll get alot of late August crickett chirps on this post as many, many people are in favor of Matt Cassel and have trashed anything remotely mentioning Kevin O'Connell. Again, I am not surprised, as I've stated, again and again, Kevin O'Connell is the answer if they are not planning on bringing in a proven guy. Why you ask? because Kevin is better, right now, than Matt Cassel who has been in this offense for 4 years.

The negativity is getting so bad around here that I'm considering taking a hiatus from the forum until I feel it's right to come back. I'm not even going to argue this anymore. If they put O'Connell in... fine. At least he's used to not being protected at all by his offensive line.

Hilarious and true!

I am not sure how much i can take between "the world is ending" to the "your not a real fan" to "cassel sucks" threads.. :(
But in reality, I will still be here everyday because I get sucked in :D

To be fair to the Patriots, though, has anyone with any authority to do so ever actually come out and said this? [Yeah, there was the quote from a player, but I think what he meant is "Tom's not coming back this season."]

Maybe implied it, sure, but has anyone actually said "Cassel is our starter for the rest of the season"?

It's going to be a lo-o-o-o-ong 2 weeks....

BB rarely if ever makes statements like that.

As I've said, even a blind squirrel finds a nut in the woods on occasion. O'Connell hasn't shown anything yet because he's not played against top players. If you think he has, more fool you.

People like you and briz spout out stupidity and then grasp onto whatever dregs you can that might support what you were spewing.

I don't know if throwing O'Connell to the dogs is the answer to fixing this season.

Considering the shape of the OL and the quality of the pass rushing we will probably be seeing going forward, it would probably do more harm than good to his progress.

Nobody from the inside can do the job, get a QB from the outside assuming its for the right price.

BB makes a LOT of vague statements regarding consideration of other players. When you ask Belichick just about any question, the answer is probably going to be some facsimile of "We're going to do whatever gives us the best chance to win."

As for eating crow about O'Connell, I don't think anyone here has really said that he CAN'T be better than Cassel. The problem is people here really don't know, and they'll take credit for being right when their argument was based on performance against 3rd stringers.

I'll flip the question around: If O'Connell or a vet comes in in a couple of weeks and doesn't do any better than Cassel, where will you be? Will you own up to the fact that you were wrong?

i thing pats always had their reservations about cassel and thats why simms and rattay were bought in even before brady got injured. they just wanted to give cassel a chance and a +ve vote of confidence so sent them back. if cassel doesnt improve his play they will make a move, what that would be no one knows. maybe troy brown at QB :)
