Patience for QB/WR Timing - we gave it to Brady, why not Cassell?

Even though one can't ignore the play (or lackthereof) of the Defense it seems like everyone's focus is on offense following a loss.

So be it.

Let's look at the issue of timing between Cassell and his WRs.

Two seasons ago with Caldwell, Gaffney and others at WR there was a roaring call for patience - well through the first half of the season - to give Tom Brady the time he needed to develop timing and a rapport with his wide receivers.

Keep in mind we're talking Tom Brady here - and a 5 year starter at the time.

Now with just one start under his belt - the first start he's had since high school no less - I see absolutely no inclination to give Cassell any time whatsoever to find a groove and develop timing and a rapport with his WRs. I think maybe some fans might want to look back at their 2006 posts and be a little more even handed to give a backup with 1 start maybe half as much slack as they gave 3 time Super Bowl winning 6th year veteran Brady.

Truth be told I felt that calling for patience with QB/WR timing went way too far in 2006 with some continuing that call through November - and as we saw last season, with talented WRs Brady didn't need a whole lot of time to get his timing down with Moss and Welker - but DAMN folks, its Cassell's 2nd start - let's show just a LITTLE bit of patience before we throw him under the bus.

If you really want to blame him today than at worst, call it a team loss - and at best acknowledge that neither the D or the O-Line made themselves look too good today.

I'd agree except Cassel is getting hammered.

I'd love to know how many times he's gotten sacked versus brady game 1-3 last season.

You're making way too much sense, stop it. We all expect last years Brady to Moss every year, and if Brady get's hurt than Cassel should be able to do it as well!

Cassel has 2 weeks to get his timing down, but if the d and the o line dont improve, we could have johnny unitias at Qb and the result would be the same.. Its going to be long frustrating yr, but we knew that 2 weeks ago.. :banned:

Because it's easier for the psyche of the bandwagon fan who doesn't understand football to blame it all on Cassel. That way they can just yell and point to the the TV and call Belichick an idiot for starting a guy that's been in the system for 4 years instead of the rookie.

Maybe, if in 7 games or so, Cassel hasn't picked it up, then he should be pulled. Until then we need to patience and hopefully the idiot/bandwagon fans will leave.

I hope this team is shopping for a QB during this coming week.

Garcia is better then Cassel, i will tell u that now, miles better!!

Why? Not to sound like a member of the coaching staff but this debacle was a team effort today. Wins in the NFL are never a given so we might have still lost with Tom Brady healthy.

The debacle today was on the defense but Cassel is average. The guy is not going to get over 200 yards passing this season. He is what he is.This team should be able to put up points with a veteran QB.

Man oh man, BB missed out with you. You should be a talent scout for an NFL team.

Maybe we should bring back Rohan Davey! He has experience in the Patriots system, and that matters way more than talent or starting experience or anything!

The reason people aren't willing to cut Cassel any slack is because he has proven NOTHING in his time with the Patriots, or heck, his time in the game of football. Brady had a lengthy track record of winning and demonstrated actual physical talent. Matty Statue has shown nothing but a penchant for getting sacked and being unable to earn an amateur starting position.

Cassel wasn't great today, but I guess I missed where he sucked so bad. Unless it was him missing all those tackles on defense, he clearly wasn't the reason the Pats lost today. If the offense scored 37 points and the defense performed like it did today, the Pats still would have lost.

Let's not put all the offensive woes in Cassel's basket either. He wasn't the one who made Randy Moss short arm a pass that would have picked up big yards if he didn't. He wasn't the one who was responsible for Welker getting tackled behind the line of scrimmage on a quick WR screen. He wasn't the one had the Pats only gain 79 yards on the ground. He wasn't blocking for himself either.

I think this was a total team loss with most of the blame going to the defensive side of the ball. I put Cassel pretty low on the blame pie today. He needed to play better today, but there are about a dozen other players I can say that about and have more reason to say it.

What happened to our dominant d-line who were manhandled by a bunch of no-name linemen. Why couldn't our LBs cover a TE that Dallas didn't even want as their back up? Where were our safties in coverage over the middle all game? Those are the questions that need to be asked more than who are we going to replace Matt Cassel for.

The timing thing was essentially an excuse 2 years ago because people on this board don't like to say the front office messed up. I'm not saying they don't exist but they were blown out of porportion. It wasn't simply timing - the WRs on that team just weren't good. Gaffney is the only one of the group still even contribtuing in the league. With the WRs they gave Brady 2 seasons ago, the front office meesed up.

And then fixed their mistake the next offseason. Notice any timing issues with the new guys even when Mosss missed much of the preseason? I'm sure they had them but they aren't that big a deal. It will make things better when they get to where they want to be but it is not going to make bad offense good. Good QBs/WRs will make plays no matter how long they have or haven't played together.
