OK, so it's ridiculously early, but I figured that, given the way thigns have turned out so far, why the heck not? :D

Seriously, though, the Patriots traded for the San Diego Chargers' second-round draft pick. The important point here is that, to maximize the value of this pick, we want either (A) SD to be the only team picking at its "level," or (B) to be the second-highest ranked team. (This is because draft picks cycle from round to round; if two or more teams finish at, say, 7-9, the team with the worst strength of schedule picks first in round 1, but then picks last among those teams in round 2.)

If you need a refresher on how draft picks are ordered, I explain it in this thread.

In any case, right now, here is the order of picks in round 2, as of the end of week 2:

33. Detroit (0-2, .516 SOS)
34. Jacksonville (0-2, .552)
35. Cincinnati (0-2, .552)
36. Kansas City (0-2, .563)
37. Miami (0-2, .567)
38. Minnesota (0-2, .581)
39-40. San Diego (0-2, .594)
39-40. St. Louis (0-2, .594)
41. Seattle (0-2, .625)
42. Cleveland (0-2, .655)
43. Houston (0-1, .419)
[. . .]
59. New England (2-0, .469)

Since all I need to do from here on out is enter the current records in my spreadsheet, I should be able to update this at least once every two weeks through week 10 or so, and then weekly thereafter.

Great, now the homers will be telling us Belichick knew the Chargers would suck in 08.

They have a shot at an extra third as well for the Asante Samuel compensatory pick.
One first, two seconds, two thirds.

(Potentially five new tight ends for the Pats!)

It's become an annual rite of fall. Rooting for another team's demise. Sure hope LT's
big toe isn't hurt too bad:)

Just to be clear--it's not "have a shot at." It's closer to "are all but certain to get." :)

What are the conditions that need to be met?
This is the guy for tracking this stuff :

NFL Forum :: - Projecting the 2008 Compensatory Picks

The first post there is his projections which were mostly correct. The three #3s were all correct but there was one additional one also.

Those #3 picks were $7M a year contracts. Samuel got just about $10M a year. I think he was the most costly FA this year, am I mistaken ? Anyway, as long as he plays all year we seem headed easily for a #3 comp pick I believe.

The only potentially mitigating factors are :

- Were there several higher UFA contracts ? I don't think so.
- How much does playing time affect it in case he gets hurt ?
- Did we sign UFAs in numbers, not size of contracts, to offset ? I don't think so.
- And, of course, the Jolly Roger factor.

This is how the actuals were for the rounds 3/4:

THIRD ROUND
Washington (Derrick Dockery, $7 million per season, 16 GP/16 GS)
Cincinnati (Eric Steinbach, $6.971 million, 16/16)
Baltimore (Adalius Thomas, $6.9 million, 16/15)
Atlanta - Kerney (not from his projection)

FOURTH ROUND
Buffalo (Mike Gandy, $4.667 million, 16/16)
Baltimore (Tony Pashos, $4.7 million, 15/15)
Philadelphia (Donte Stallworth, $5.083 million, 16/9)
Green Bay (Ahman Green, $5.6 million, 6/5)
Tennessee (Drew Bennett, $5 million, 14/1) – possibly a fifth- round pick
San Diego (Donnie Edwards, $4.5 million, 16/16) – possibly a fifth-round pick

Scout.com: Chargers Trade Up to Tab RB/FB Jacob Hester

"San Diego filled its need for depth at running back and fullback with a single pick. The Chargers traded into the third round to tab LSU runner Jacob Hester, a do-it-all back who can run, block and catch. In exchange, San Diego shipped its fifth-round pick in 2008 and a second-round pick in 2009 to the New England Patriots."
