Maybe this is a bad thread, but I find the shadow roster thing VERY interesting. I now know of two players who are available if the patriots come calling.

Seau and now Brown, according to Reiss (citing a super secret source).
Brown would put off retirement - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

Excerpt:
The source said Brown has reached the point where he would only postpone retirement to play for the Patriots, the team he suited up for the last 15 seasons. He would not play for another team.

John Lynch is still unsigned, despite Jets interest (which Brown also turned down).

Now I'm not making a case for signing old dudes for no reason, but do you think these shadow rosters are common? Are the Patriots dominant within the league for keeping these guys at their disposal?

If nothing else, I thought Reiss spec on Brown was interesting. I can't see us needing more receivers, but I wonder if Troy has reason to hold off officially retiring that we don't know? Hm.

Re: The Shadow Roster.

I think the pats have a special place in the league for some players because of their competitiveness and organization. Not every team can offer players a great sense of team, superb coaching, and a shot at the playoffs every year.

"I can't see us needing more receivers?????"

Um, what ?

Have Kelley Washington and Gaffney done something to get you out of your seat yet?

Haha, no, but... ok, I'm too new to know what Troy might have left in the tank. Does he offer something they don't? That's not sarcasm, I genuinely don't know much about the guy.

Troy knows this offense so well that he could step in tomorrow and more than likely be more productive as a 4th WR than Kelley Washington. Kelley has shown zonk so far as a WR aside from one dropped pass. I honestly expected alot more out of Washington and Troy sees the writing on the wall, that's what prompted his hint to "Crap or get off the pot to BB ala Friday", let's hope it happens.

People have been doing cartwheels since Chad Jackson was cut because now Kelley Washington would finally get his chance to show us what he can do. Well, I'm still waiting.

We have played two games with a new QB. I am not pounding my chest for Kelley but I would wait a little longer.

Re: The Shadow Roster.

The "shadow roster" has at times existed in the past (Testaverde, Poteat, etc) but has largely been a fantasy, they haven't made much use of it lately. Part of the reason is that our shadow roster has to some extent become the Jet's actual roster :)

You have over 1000 posts and you don't know that much about Troy Brown. With all due respect, perhaps more time should be spent reading and a little bit less time writing? If I'm out of line then I apologize, but I just couldn't get past that line.

You cut me to the quick. lol

Nah, I'm still learning about guys that mattered in the past. I'm a newish fan, to football in general, not just the Patriots. Don't hate.

Yeah, maybe he could replace Moss, too. He only had two catches last week.

If Troy could not supplant them last year what makes you think he could this year?

Re: The Shadow Roster.

One other shadow roster attraction is the opportunity for a skilled veteran to play a role commensurate with their aging talent. No need to be an every down player or to be exposed to situations beyond their capabilities. BB's coaching team has a well deserved reputation for utilizing a player's skills situationally in a role. What a great way to cap a career.

It also doesn't hurt to be able to say someday, "Yeah, I knew HOF coach Belichick. I played for him." Wicked pissah.

does anyone feel that troy brown just offers the same as what we get with welker??? it seems like it would be redundant to bring in brown when we have a better version player with welker. Dont get me wrong i love troy brown hes still the face of the patriots to me but i just cant see him getting many touches in the offense that would take away from wes

I think the determining factor is that Troy is old now. Troy 3 or 5 years ago would have gotten reps even with Welker around.

How about having bringing about Ben Coates? Troy is done. Get used to it.
