There will in all likelyhood be little if any blowouts by this team this season as I expect the increased rushing attack to continue to slow down scoring and result in much closer games than last year.

With that being said, I think the league's worst team at this point is our next opponent the Dolphins - If this team is going to blow a team out this year I think the odds are it could be this week against what appears to be the weakest team they play all season.

If a blowout does occur this week and the Patriots are ahead by a large number heading into the middle of the 3rd quarter is it wise to pull Cassel out for Gutz or O'Connell or should Cassel just finish the game to continually get him game ready for playing 4 quarters and tighter games against the tougher teams down the road?

Part of me says play Cassel all game to keep him involved in the offense all the more and part of me says if a more than slight injury occurs to Cassel in garbage time then it could be tough to get Gutz and O'Connell ready to start in time for the next game

With Brady this year in a potential blowout it would have been a no brainer to bench him in the
3rd with his foot injury (prior to the big knee one of course) - This is a tougher choice now

What would you do as HC?

I am not saying its likely - This is strictly a scenerio

And BTW, better talking about this then talking about some trash talking loser like Porter which has nothing to do with the game itself

well let's talk about the matchup of seymour against jake long

let's talk about the miami secondary

let's talk about the pats ability to run the ball with morris and maroney

do the fins have a pass rush aside from porter

Cassel needs the game reps. Granted our backup QB do too. But I say give Cassel the practice.

a- Seymour wins the battle
b- Will Allen and Co. suck
c- Maroney won't play I hear - Morris will be fine
d- Most QBs can have lunch with Miami's DL so no

Anything else?

But it's an interesting cart, don't you think? He acknowledged that blowouts are unlikely, but it's still an intriguing if-then scenario. If Cassel did come out in the 4th for any reason, who would take over?

Okay then, here's another unlikely but interesting scenario: What if there was a four-way collision among Vrabel, Mayo, Bruschi, and Thomas, and they all got concussions, and when they sent a cart out for them, the gas pedal got stuck and it ran over Alexander, Izzo, Wood, Crabel and Guyton and gave them all high ankle sprains. And when Rodney went over to help, he bumped in Sanders and Meriweather and the three of them fell on then the GatorAde table, dislocating all their shoulders, but the Gator Ade table fell onto the bench where Wheately, WEHilhite, Sanders, O'Neal and Hobbs were sitting and banged all their knees, dislocating all their kneecaps.

If this happens, and I admit it is unlikely, what defense would Pees call?

Not sure, but it probably starts with Ventrone at NT :)

Depends on how many points ahead..AND how well Cassel has played... I ALSO think with the bye week ahead that reps is important...BUT it would not surprise me to see another QB in there in the 4th quarter...IT IS tricky..but if Cassel has played an A plus game...and the Pats are ahead by 20...another QB will be in.. I KNOW a lot of ifs...but let's put the cart WAY ahead for this one..and it is OK to do that once in awhile..

When the hell did blowing out Miami at home become unlikely?

If your answer is simply "Tom Brady" then don't respond.

Even bad teams blow out other bad teams. We certainly do not have a bad team and the Dolphins are still quite possibly the worst team in football.

Valid post, since it's really a simple what if question.

I say if Cassel is making good reads and is destroying Miami in the air, both Cassel and Moss come out. The next QB inline is the rookie, might as well give him some playing time in an actual NFL game. Look how close we came last week to needing him, thank good Cassel's knee injury was something he could walk off !!

That's all assuming the Pats are able to dominate Miami !

He hardly ever pulled Brady I doubt he pulls Cassel. I would say OConnell goes in for kneel downs to run out the clock. Cassel needs all the snaps he can get

If the pats end up winning this game by a huge score (let's for example, say 38-3), will they be accused of running up the score?

I can see some value in getting O'C some game reps. After all, he's now moved into the top backup position. If anything happens to Cassel, Kevin O'Connel is our starting QB. And yes, I do think we can and probably will blow out the Phins.

Hey, want to make a deal? I'll give you a thousand bucks if that happens, you give me a thousand bucks if the Patriots are blowing out Miami in the 4th quarter. Sound fair? After all, they're both "unlikely," right? :)

We talk about hypotheticals here all the time. Heck, all the grumbling about backup QBs in the preseason was looking at the "unlikely" scenario that Brady suffered a serious injury, sigh. Is a blowout of the Miami Dolphins really such an outlandish scenario?

This seems like a decent thread, I don't get all of the hostility. If people want threads about "Seymour vs Jake Long", nothing is preventing them from starting them.

Put me in the camp that says Cassel needs all the snaps he can get. I'd like to see a bizarro-2007 game where they open up a big lead with the run and then move to the pass to close out the game's last few possessions.
