If Cassel leads the Pats to the playoffs...

Of course I agree he'll be going somewhere, but I don't see some big deal happening unless he can at the least take this team to the playoffs.

i think cassel will be a good QB, but not he likes of Brady...hence we will let cassel move on....

what they can do is either transition tag him (1st and a 3rd rounder) or franchise tag him (2 1st rounders)

Id put my money on the transition tag if he makes it deep into the playoffs and ends up with 25+ TDs. The browns did that to anderson last year and if you remember they had to scramble to get him signed last minute because at least 3 teams were beating down the browns door with 1st and 3 round pick offers

That pats will offer him 2nd QB money. They already have O'C waiting to play so losing Cassel won't be the end of the world. He deserves a big contract if he can take the Pats that far. It'll be like every other Pats player that developed through the ranks then ran off for that big deal at the end.

If we Franchise him and he's had a really good season and is looking for a long term deal then we're set because he would likely wait on signing the franchise deal and we could trade him.

The more likely scenario is he's had a decent season. Maybe similar to Brady in 2001 had we lost to the Raiders in the playoffs. Interesting upside but not actually a top QB yet. Then it's more tricky because he would jump on the Franchise contract most likely and it's guaranteed. Then we'd have to find a team willing to trade for him either with the one year contract or with a pre-agreed to multi year deal.

If he has proved capable it's very likely we could find a trading partner. Whether we get a #1 or a #5 would depend on how he does and he still has a lot of proving to do. But we're in a solid situation, Belioli will likely have a good idea (maybe even an unofficial offer) if he's had a good enough year to trade. If he hasn't, we don't franchise him and he leaves as a UFA. If he has, we Franchise him and trade him.

brady still has 4 or so years left and more if he wants since he relys on things other then a canon arm, so i dont think the successor to brady is even in the nfl at this point.

Super unlikely, but stranger things have happened. If a QB who's 5 years younger can beat him, he's gone. It's just business, not sentimentality.

That said, I'd be shocked. I think Matt could do well here and go to a GOOD team needing a starter. So... not the Jets.

No, he wouldn't be leaving for the "Big Deal" - he'll be leaving for the chance to start.

How could you make a negative out of that? The Pats won't offer him 2nd QB money if they make the playoffs - hell they won't even make him an offer, they will simply wish him good luck in his new starting job.

I don't think they would franchise him. I think it would be tough to work that. Teams would know we don't intend on keeping him at that price. Its possible, but I think it would be tough to work it. If they could, then it would great. IMO, he will walk via FA and start somewhere next year - unless these past two games were an anomaly.

This thread is pretty funny. If if if if if . He has started one game and didn't mess up. Now people already have him "leading" us to the Super Bowl and trying to decide what to do with him IF he does.

I say that's pretty unlikely. I say its most likely he will show himself to be a decent backup - a Damon Huard or Brian Griese, at best. I say the chances of him being in Tom Brady's class are somewhere between 0 and 0.001%. Could it happen? Sure. But I just think we should all wait a few more games before we fit him for a bust in Canton, to quote a certain fat guy we all used to know and love.
