I guess Wakefield was pissed off ... nice 8 inning 3 hit shutout to put our guys back to 2 games behind. Looks like we have at least the wild card sewn up but I want the division.

Big day tomorrow with double headers for both the Rays and Sox. I have a question on Ortiz. Why doesn't he practice bunting. If he would practice going down the third base line the opposing team would not put that shift on him, thus giving him more hits to the right side. With a fast runner on second, that runner has a good chance to score on a good bunt. I know he's paid to drive in runs, but he's not as big a threat this year due to the wrist, so why not make them pay.

other teams would love to have ortiz bunt on a regular basis. that takes the bat out of his hands. other teams arent going to stop putting on the shift because ortiz starts bunting.

I believe they put a shift on the other night with a runner on second. If he had bunted correctly, he would have had a hit and advanced the runner to third. Another situation, is a runner on first, he bunts and it puts a runner in scoring position.
If the other teams are that devastated by Ortiz ( they are not / this year) they would walk him. That shift essentially stops a base hit, not the extra base hit. He bunts and they do not deploy that shift.

I have also wondered that, if Ortiz can bunt a little all he has to do is get it out past the pitcher and it is a base hit. I know he is paid to hit homers, but he can still do that sometimes when we badly need runners.

How can you not love Wakefield?!

im sorry but i think thats nuts. the last thing i want papi doing is bunting shift or no shift. his numbers would have been fine this year if not for his injury.

BINGO! You've got bingo.
That's what I'm saying. He is having problems with his wrist and is not the same hitter, if he would bunt it would give him an automatic hit, not to mention if someone was on base. If Ortiz was on the opposing team and the Sox used the shift, Ortiz gets a free ride to first base everytime. How long would it be before you start throwing things at the tv (that's how upset I would be).

Not only that, but they use that shift with runners on second. There are a couple of Sox players who could possibly score from second with a great bunt against a right handed pitcher.

no there is no bingo. papi bunting would do nothing but get francona fired. you dont have your number three hitter bunting. hes a rbi man. you dont drive in runs by bunting lmao. cmon . his numbers have been good since returning from his injury.

Meanwhile the Sox took 3 out of 4 from the "red hot Jays, and are one game back with 13 to go. They lead the Twins by 6 games in the wild card. Any doubters left out there?

And while the great Ortiz bunting debate goes on, I advise all of you to never say never before sending in your third base coach resumes. Papi has bunted successfully before, and will do so again when the right situation presents itself.

learn how to read. the argument wasnt if papi could bunt. it was should he bunt. i dont care if hes the greatest bunter the world has ever known. in my opinion he shouldnt be bunting period.

If the third base side is wide open and we need a baserunner, why not? Other than that, I agree with you, seems the shift has taken away more basehits than past years.

This argument could go on for awhile haha

If you READ my post I said "never say never", which means there are times when he should bunt. Like football, baseball has too many variables to remove any options. You won't find one professional baseball coach who would agree with your absolutist approach.
