During the Chief's game, that 51-yard reception was successful because of an adjustment on Moss' part. At the last minute after reading the defense, with the supposed play a slant across the middle, Moss decided to burn the corner and safety and Cassel immediately saw what his intention was. The end result was a play that got them out of a tight spot...

Just got me thinkin'.

Moss said this lasst Sunday after the game. He said the safety was squatted wherehe was supposed to make his break.

Pats QBs and WRs have multiple adjustments to make for each play and this was one for this WR for this play.

This is one reason why time spent in the Pats O is more important than being a vet on another team.

This is the most important thing from the article:

"I think in this game when you have 11 guys on the same page, good things happen. When you have one of those 11 not on the same page with everybody else, then bad things will happen."

The Vikings and Raiders would NEVER guess that was a quote from Randy Moss. Randy has consumed the Belichick Kool-Aid. It doesn't matter that he spouts cliches. A lot of vocal leadership is cliche-ridden. It's important and it works.

I think Randy Moss could be league MVP this year if he assumes this role fully and this team succeeds.

Yup any other QB not familiar with our system throws the INT there expecting a slant.

Great article and great point, scrime. I agree. Sounds like Moss isn't just drinking the kool-aid, he set up his own corner stand to hand some out. I can't imagine a better way to characterize the highlights of a guy's first game than to talk about good things happening when you're all on the same page (he didn't emphasize Cassel having a great arm or whatever... he basically said "he saw it, he reacted, we were on the same page, ergo we win.")

Might be a bumpy ride going forward but I love seeing this.

Welker touched on that a little more this week in some of his comments. He said it's imperative that the receivers be decisive and make the correct adjustment rather than overthinking situations. Often times when we see Tommy miss and the pundits here go on rants about his trows being a little to long or short or high or low or wtf was he throwing that one to...it's because the WR wasn't as decisive as the QB... When that happens consistently the QB will either become indecisive as well while trying to guess what a receiver may do or simply stop going to a WR altogether because he can't trust him. The QB here is often making throws before or just as the WR comes out of his break. He's throwing to a predetermined spot. Getting open is one thing, being open where the QB expected to find you is another. And that is what this system is predicated on.

And let's not forget the other thing that play accomplished: it showed Moss, "Just because Tom's not here doesn't mean you won't be seeing any long bombs."

While we're remembering the throw to Moss, keep in mind the throw to Welker near the EZ, where Cassel expected Welker to run toward the EZ and Welker cut off his route.

It was a critical play.

If Welker had kept going, it might have been a TD and put the game out of reach. If Cassel had thrown short it was a sure 1st down, and possibly a TD in the next set of downs.

There will be just as many of those as well, until these guys get in sync. It takes a while and we'll need to take the good with the bad.

Yeah that part makes me a little too giddy and I don't like thinking about it. I'm not going to think about a lot of high-octane offense, d%#*!@t. I am going to assume we're shooting for competent game management.

I will not expect too much... I will not expect too much... I will not expect too much...

Exactly. Brady would have the same issue with poor receivers. It's a long jump from 24 TD's to 50 TD's. That's not all Brady by any stretch.

He can't telegraph the receiver, he has to look off his receiver, so the receiver has to pull the route off because the QB is only going to look long enough to see if he's where he needs to be and throw ahead of him (if it's long).

Anything over maybe a 6-8 yard pass (I'm guessing) requires a throw to a spot, not a receiver, if that makes sense.

This is the reason why I think all the Culpepper talk is ludicrious. Cassel may or may not be as physically gifted as Culpepper (at this point it is disputable), but Cassel seems to know how to read defenses better than Culpepper (not exactly a compliment to Cassel since Culpepper is notorious for being bad at it).

The Pats' offensive system has more presnap reads than almost every offense in the league. Guys like Donald Hayes, Doug Gabriel, and apparently Chad Jackson failed here because they could grasp these reads (granted Gabriel also had an attitude problem). It is even more important for the QB to know everyone's presnap adjustments. That is why Cassel is a better option than a lot of more established QBs.

I think it also showed a lot of confidence by Mc Daniels in Cassel to call it. As you will all remember, it was third and quite a bit (probably 3rd and 10), we had almost conceded a safety on two occasions and an unproven QB was on the field. It was, in retrospect, a great call. Kudos to him, because I wouldn't have had the balls to do it.

Let's hope that Cassel wins more games than he loses. I'd be happy with a trip to the playoffs this year. Anything else would be a bonus for me.

Makes me wonder what other adjustments Cassel will be allowed to make at the LOS. For so many people thinking that a conservative approach will be taken, it just begs a few questions. Doesn't he have an intimate knowledge of what Brady sees in making his adjustments over the last few years? If so, will he be SO confused there? Possibly. The film room to the field is a huge jump. If not, we could be in for a convincing offensive showing. Moss isn't being asked to run normal routes and is obviously allowed to execute the option plays that could punch holes in the secondary.

I take it as a good sign.

People here don't always like to acknowledge it even in hindsignt, but Welker knew that one was on him. That's what he was talking about - he was indecisive while the backup QB was not. As they walked off the field Cassel came over to him and patted him on the head like his mentor would have under the circumstances - in other words we'll get 'em next time.
