That about wraps up the Alex Smith era in SF. Guess you could say they drafted the wrong QB that year.

SMITH LANDS ON IR
Posted by Mike Florio on September 10, 2008, 2:17 p.m. EDT
Less than two days after quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ career with the Packers unofficially began, quarterback Alex Smith’s career with the 49ers is unofficially over.

The team has announced that Smith has been placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury suffered in practice on Friday.

Recently, G.M. Scot McGloughan acknowledged that, if Smith isn’t the starter in 2009, the team won’t be able to justify keeping Smith and his $9.625 million base salary.

The Niners were considering both Smith and Rodgers in April 2005. When they chose Smith with the first overall pick, Rodgers commenced a 23-spot free fall, landing in Green Bay with the 24th overall selection.

Meanwhile, the Niners might be feeling some regrets about passing on Rodgers, who looked like an established veteran against the Vikings.

And the list of other teams that might be having second thoughts about not drafting Rodgers likely includes the Vikings, who had not one but two cracks at Rodgers. Instead, they took Troy Williamson at No. 7 and Erasmus James at No. 18.

Question: Where are they now?

Answer: Don’t waste your time looking for them on the Minnesota roster.

ANOTHER ONE goes down.................... in a few weeks each team will be playing with second stringers

Re: Alex Smith out for year

That draft simply convinced me that for all the money the NFL pays scouts, they do not watch the same college football games that I'm watching.

Rodgers was in the Bay Area playing ball, and the 49ers didn't give him enough of a look. He was much better than Smith in college.

Anyone who watched college ball could also just tell that Favre was going to be the big prize for QBs that year.

Drew Brees excelled at the position in college, and he came from a pro-style system.

Similarly, this year, the kid I would have bet on first is Brian Brohm. Yes, he's behind Rodgers now, but that kid knows how to play the position, very much like Brees.

Miami made a huge mistake by going with Henne.

Henne wasn't a top 5 pick.. plus we like michigan Qb's around here :)

Re: Alex Smith out for year

Is it just me or are there more (bad) injuries than usual? Especially considering the time of year too,I guess.

Re: Alex Smith out for year

Wow, this has been a crappy start to the NFL season. There has been a ton of injuries.

Re: Alex Smith out for year

Alex Smith was the second string,

well in this case THIRD STRINGERS........... just goes to show how bad of a season this one is turning out to be

Re: Alex Smith out for year

Smith needed a strong organization if he was going to be successful. Right now, the 49ers are pretty broken, and they're blame-shifting by pointing the finger at the young guy who's been hurt a couple of times now.

Also, Henne looked pretty good for the Dolphins this summer. Bill Parcells is an OK judge of talent.

Finally, bad drafting kills any team. But you draft a guy for your system - they've changed systems each year on Smith - no wonder he hasn't panned out.

Re: Alex Smith out for year

Hopefully all of these injuries are showing Mr. Goodell that adding another regualr season game is a poor idea. If anything, they should subtract a game or give everyone 2 bye weeks instead of one. The season could be 18 weeks and everyone could still play 16 games.

And so, huh? Wha?

Did I say he was?

What are you talking about?

I'm sure Browning Nagle also looked decent in the preseason at one point. I'm talking about how they played in college. henne was bad, and Brohm was magnificent.

Re: Alex Smith out for year

The problem in that draft IMO wasn't Alex Smith vs. Aaron Rodgers. It was SF's 100% determination to take a QB in a draft with no obvious franchise QBs. (Remember, Rodgers wasn't a prototype physical specimen and had played in a college system with a history of inflating QBs' performance.)

Yet in the 49ers' defense, that draft has produced ton of high-pick flameouts. Other top-10 picks include Pacman Jones, Troy Williamson, Mike Williams, and Cedric Benson.

Let's let Jones screw up his tenure with the Cowboys before we call him a flameout. He might just be able to redeem himself.

I hate to say it because it will be confused with hindsight, but those failures may very well have been predictable. Everybody knew that Williamson couldn't catch, Jones had character issues, Williams was a TE out of football for a year with questionable dedication, and that Benson had a ton of question marks. Everybody except the media, I guess, who don't know what they're talking about. BB doesn't pick any of those players because they don't love football. And that's why the Smith pick is indicative of the 49ers organizational problems. And we're glad for it because it brought us Mayo. :)

Sorry, let me clarify -- flameout as a draft pick. Redeeming himself with Dallas would just rub salt in the Titans' wounds.

Well, he wasn't magnificent last year. Crable wasn't magnificent but we've pretty well established that they didn't really know what they were doing at Michigan. You have to be very careful about projecting College performance to the Pros. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, especially if you land with a crap organization.

Re: Alex Smith out for year

But hey, let's make the regular season longer!

Not gonna happen because the name of the game is REVENUE. I wouldn't be surprised if the season was extended to 18 games. But if they do that I think they should give that 2nd bye week and cut the preseason short.

This is true - expanding the season brings in a lot of money. I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL tries to sneak it through while the union tries to find a replacement for Upshaw.
