We all know people who have something in their lives they can’t get comfortable with. They are always swapping their house, their car, their hairstyle – even their spouse :)eek:). I think that our beloved coach is that way with punters.

Look at the ones we’ve had recently: Ken “I’ve Still Got the Photos” Walter; Brooks “We Hardly Knew You” Barnard; Todd “Roid Boy” Sauerbrun; Josh “I’m in the Hall of Fame – well, the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame” Miller; Danny “Watch out, Dad” Baugher – and the present incumbent, Chris “The Mad Axeman” Hanson. Add in practice squad appearances by Tom “The One Who Didn’t Clock His Father” Malone and Mike “Dancing Queen” Dragosavich. I mean, HOW HARD CAN IT BE to find a punter?!!

Personally, I liked Josh Miller by far the most, since he appeared to have some idea of where the ball would come down when he kicked it, unlike Hanson (those two touch-backs on Sunday drove me nuts – kick it to the sidelines, for goodness sake!)

And now Malone is making a come-back. Is there a clinical name for this? Please, please, please Bill! Just find a decent punter. Pay him what it takes and forget about punting. Then you can get back to worrying about stopping the Jets’ pass rush, getting Cassel in synch with his receivers, finding a way to have Maroney running in a broken field and all the other really important stuff.

Chris Hanson seems to be auditioning for his next team by getting

a good punting average. As soon as Belichick gets a punter he is

satisfied with, Chris may become a free agent a year early.

Re: Punters: the turf is always greener ...

I think one thing the patriots need is not a punter who can only boot the ball 60 yards (or 70 like hanson), but a guy that can consistently pin the opponent inside the 10 yard line. I think punting average is overrated. Lechler makes the pro bowl every year, but in my opinion, he sucks. guy gets a touchback every time. yah its nice if you get a 70 yarder and a touchback, but when the "best" averages 47, and the "worst" 42, I would take the guy who averages 42 if he can pin the opponent deep. being a former college punter, that is my opinion

Re: Punters: the turf is always greener ...

If you want a directional punter you should look at some afl players, but for some reason i doubt that is something BB would do.

What matters is not how far (or how high) you kick it -- what matters is where your opponents start their next drive.

I don't really care what BB prioritizes at this stage. I just wish he would make up his mind!
