This is an honest question and I really am not trying to troll or incite anything. Mods if you feel that this question is trolling please just dump b/c I honestly want to know the answer. That said:

Last year you guys were vilified by the media, NFL, and by nearly every fan in the NFL. I feel it was not warranted to the extent in which it was absurdly executed btw. B/c of this many of your fans turned into the FU NFL mentality and to be honest I dont blame you. I saw you guys created the FU NFL tour poster and even got a big kick out of being the bad guys. Now with the Brady injury it seems as if everyone has rejoiced b/c one it was Brady but also IMO the Pats are still the bad guys in everyone's mind. However I noticed that you guys as opposed to last year are getting a big kick out of being the under dogs again. My questions are a) IF you enjoyed being the villain last year and took such great pleasure at kicking everyone's arse last year(obviously not everyone) shouldn't you not be too shocked by everyone's reaction this season. It does justify it b/c people like Wilbon are clowns for predicting injury. Even the NY Post, they may have had no bad intentions but you can not print the title Yahoo!: Brady out for season b) would you rather the Pats just become the team that isn't villified by the media and take more of the underdog role?.

i kinda got lost in your question bro...but...

of course this rejoicing and then following doomsday saying for the pats were expected...they were most defenetely expected by me, LOL, not at all surprised with anything thats happened so far as the media/fan reaction to the injury...

now if ur asking whether its funner to be the bad guy or the underdog, im not sure...last yr was really fun, but i wont complain if we have to prove everyone wrong (again) this year either...

Great post btw.....I would say B....be the underdog and keep under the radar...but i know that wont happen unfortunately...

Sports journalism is going to be writing about the Patriots for the next few weeks and IMO if we win games, it might be worse or better...time will tell...

sorry about that;), what ultimately made me post this is that I think that this whole anti- Patriot crusade world wide is getting ridiculous. Trust me, I will never complain about anyone who wants to knock the Pats but spygate was overblown to no extent, some of the media seems to be taking great pleasure in the Brady injury. Its true that people hate what makes sports so great and thats consistently great teams/dynasties. The media irks me b/c it seems they love to build up players and teams and then try to tear them down. I have always respected the hell out of Brady even though he hates my team :(. I honestly wanted to see the Jets try to take down the monster known as the Pats at full strength.

What alot of people who arent true NE fans dont get and they will never get...is THIS TEAM. Being a true fan of this team you can see the media for what it is, and because of it there has never been such a disparity of reporting. I think us as PATS fans refuse to think of football as entertainment first, which honestly is whats being pushed as a product in the national market. I think the sarcasm New Englanders are known for combined with the winning attitude and the circus of the OCHO CINCO NFL....you have us outside the bubble making lemonade from lemons. You think this is a big game coming up this weekend, new players, Favre, Mangina/Belichick, beating the Phins, first place in the division,"playoff ramification"(what a JOKE)....we think it will be a hard fought football game, let the best TEAM win. We might not be the 07 Pats team without TB, but your team isnt the 07 Giants either.

Gotta say, I too got a little lost, but I'll take a stab too.

I totally expected the "joyish" reactions around the league to Brady's injury. I find them disgusting, but after the treatment we got last year, I expected it (sadly). I loved the FU mentaility, and to be fair. I've not LOST IT. To ESPN, all the others saying we're done for the year already, or we suck without Tom, blaa, blaa, blaa........

A great big FU to all of them.

As for underdog.................... I'd SAY not. We're still the defending AFC champs and I like the rest of this team's chances just fine. If BB say's we don't need another QB, then I guess we don't. Cassel is the Man

I'm not buying the BS underdog mantra yet. To me, it's still FU NFL, we're still ****ing here.

I don't think we hate the media to be different, we just want to see the media be consistent. There are plenty of examples, we don't need to go into detail, but stuff like a) criticism of BB for Spygate while ignoring that other teams did the same, such as Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys...b) dismissing Pollard's hit while blasting Wilfork as a dirty player for a very similar play...c) run-up-the-score-gate [see Mike/Mike/Mike at end of Broncos/Raiders, or years worth of Colts games]...there are plenty of other examples.

Also, nobody is surprised by the reaction to Brady's injury, at least I'm not. Last year was fun as the villian largely because the criticism was completely ridiculous, biased, and was not based at all in rational thought. And the hate came from everywhere, specifically media and opposing fans. But that said, for several years the Pats were the underdogs, dismissed by most, and those teams were great to root for too [look at pats1's thread from earlier tonight]. Brady's injury was horrible, obviously. But as we move forward, we're left with a big unknown, and in some way's that's kind of exciting. I mean, we have no idea what to expect from Matt Cassel. Personally I'm not overly optimistic, but I'm anxiously awaiting what's going to happen.

The rejoicing of an injury sounds inhumane, it is understood because it gives all other teams a better chance at winning. As Pats fans, we would be fools to admit that we were happy that Philip Rivers and LT were injured en route to their AFC Championship appearance. It sounds awful, but instead of looking at it as "cheering injury" think of it as "cheering your team's increased chances".

Even with that being said, there is some luster lost by winning without beating the best. The 2007 World Series trophy, while still great, did not have the same feel as the 2004 Red Sox World Series victory because it did not come at the Yankees expense.

As for the whole villain vs. underdog............I think everyone likes to be the underdog. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't like an underdog. If success is to last, however, the underdog tag has to wear off. In doing so, it is only natural for the fan base to embrace the 'everyone is out to get us, attitude'. I think we would all admit that we don't exactly like the FU attitude. I'd much rather the Pats go back to being known as the scrappy, blue collar team that just finds a way to get it done vs. the cheating (spygate and Rodney), prima donnas that ran up the scoreboard just to spite the opponents and the NFL.

I got lost in that post... re: playing the part of the villain. Bottom Line: Success breeds contempt. The longer the success the deeper the contempt.

Someday the Jets might actually experience this (hopefully I'll be dead by then ;) )

It's one thing to be happy about a headache, a toothache, a mild ankle sprain and the like. Those are minor injuries which could keep a player out of a game or two. It's another thing to cheer on injuries that cost players entire seasons, and even careers.

(obviously not everyone) shouldn't you not be too shocked by everyone's reaction this season. No, not shocked. Expected. Would see the same thing in Manning went down It does justify it b/c people like Wilbon are clowns for predicting injury. Don't really care about the media, I just get tired of stupidity. Having Ditka and Steve Young complain about running up the score was so hypocritical, but after a while it was just a roll-your-eyebrows affair. Also, Marshall Faulk saying in the same show he tried to get the defensive signals yet was most vehement in condemning the Pats. Stuff like that.

What bothered me most about the whole thing, though, were the Boston media's actions. Yeah, some of teh NY Post stuff is annoying but they are supportive of the Jets and i am envious.

Some people don't understand the hate toward Tomase, but if I ever wished injury on someone, it would be him. I don't but it tests me.

In the end it was up to the Pats to execute, but creating the media storm the day before was taxing on everyone. Coaches and staff had to take time to talk to NFL, etc. poorly handled by NFL. Should have postponed everything.

More should have been done about it when it turned out to be not true.

Surprisingly, I am mixed aobut losing the superbowl. It hurt a lot, and hate to think of Mercury Morris, and I reallly wanted an undefeated season, but in my heart I believe that the media would have called it the Spygate Superbowl forever.

At least this way it is a new season. I was really hoping to get back. I still think we can, but it will be hard, and I expect the rest of my hair to go gray, the ones I have left from 2001.

Sorry about typos, I'm falling asleep here.

Ok the last line made me snort in such an unladylike way.

Agree 100 %, the spygate deal wore out on me quickly when I found out that most of the successful teams thorugh out history (Broncos, Steelers, Cowboys etc.) all had something connected with the team which seemed to bend the rules and even break them in some scenarios (Broncos salary cap)

What bothered me most about the whole thing, though, were the Boston media's actions. Yeah, some of teh NY Post stuff is annoying but they are supportive of the Jets and i am envious. I lol'd at the last comment as sad as it is even local papers go after the Pats

Some people don't understand the hate toward Tomase, but if I ever wished injury on someone, it would be him. I don't but it tests me. Do I dare ask why you or anyone else despises Tomase, I have no clue who he is

IMO similar to this year, no matter what happens either BB will be called a fraud for losing w/o Brady or Brady will be called a system QB.

At least this way it is a new season. I was really hoping to get back. I still think we can, but it will be hard, and I expect the rest of my hair to go gray, the ones I have left from 2001.

Do I wish we could go back to pre-Spygate? Sure, I don't think anyone likes the fact that every other fanbase seems to hate us. The FU NFL mentality wasn't something that we chose, but it was sort of forced on us, because everywhere we turned either the media, ******ed ex-players, sanctimonious coaches, or know-nothing fans were piling on. So we said "**** em all" and continued to enjoy watching our team.

Are we paying for that this year? I dunno, hard to say. I'm not quite as willing to draw the direct correlation as you are, though you definitely may be on to something there. Realistically, though, I doubt that people rejoicing Brady's injury and all that has anything to do with us, and even if Spygate had never happened I have a feeling that most people would still have more or less the same reaction. After all, Boston teams are hated in every sport, because for some reason the rest of the country hates Bostonians and New Yorkers both (If Peyton or Brady played for a Giants/Jets dynasty and went down, the reaction would be essentially the same IMO). Maybe they're jealous, but I don't really know and don't really care. All that I know is that everyone else hated our teams long before Spygate, and Spygate just gave them enough of a pretend justification to be totally shameless about it.

That said, I've grown used to the hate and I honestly don't even really care anymore. I live in Chargers/Lakers territory, and I've found that the best way to deal with opposing fans is to just not sink to their level. When the Pats beat the Chargers in the AFCCG, I didn't say a word to anyone around here about it. Same when the Celtics beat the Lakers. I don't *enjoy* being hated, and it would be nice if it stopped, but I know that it's not going to and I'm not going to waste my time really caring about the opinions of a bunch of low-lifes with nothing better to do than be belligerent jackasses based on their sports preferences.

Besides, I still think that the Pats are in it this year, even without Brady. I don't think that Cassel is going to be awesome or anything, but I think he'll be reasonably good, and reasonably good is good enough to be a contender with the weapons that he has around him.

I apologize that that's kind of a rambling answer, but it's the best one that I can give without putting a lot more time into this post. To sum it up in a sentence, or two: take a look at all the people who are piling on right now. Are any of them the kind of person that warrants caring what they think?

It's sports. It's par for the course. No contradictions in this at all. Don't take it too seriously. The FU was all in good fun.

I'd like to know what belichickfan thinks about all the opposing fans rejoicing over Brady's injury, after he openly admitted to wishing a season ending injury on manning.
But I feel bad for Brady, and think it's disgusting to revel in someone else's discomfort. I feel bad for my biggest rival's QB who has more money and has banged more beautiful women than i ever will. What a conflicting emotion this is.

a lot of dislike is built up by the media and lets face it by obnoxious fans which even we have. So other teams fans begin to hate the team because their fans are such.i can give an example from the pats perspective- there was RyanThecoltsFan and there was this chargers fan(forgot his id) . they are worlds apart which made me atleast hate the chargers even more.i guess same applies when some of us react such with other teams fans .and also the media doesnt like the NE organizationś smugness and lack of access and robotic operation so they like something which disturbs the cart.

ahh, i now comprehend :D

(stick around these forums...u remind me there are sane fans out there)

u dont know who Tomase is?

hes the guy that wrote the story about the pats taping a SB practice on the eve of the SB, which led to everyone (media/fans/NFL/commish) to distract the pats on the day of the SB....

which could or could not have affected their performance in the SB (needless to say, hes not very much liked around here...)
