OK humor me here, this is hypothetical but it is a question that I have been wondering about.

But what if Cassel starts out slow kinda like Brady did and does ok so BB gives him more and more leeway until by the end of the season Cassel looks like a seasoned pro. Say he finishes the season with 30 TD's, 15 INT's, 3500 Yards and a QB Rating around 90. Then in the playoffs he leads the Patriots to the Superbowl where he wins it and has a great game where he is named the MVP.

Next year. You have HOF QB Tom Brady winner of 3 Superbowls but 32 years old and coming off ACL surgery.

And you have fully healthy 27 year old hot new superstar Matt Cassel who clearly is ready to be a Pro Bowl caliber starting QB.

BB is ruthless and very business like in his evaluation of players and the future. One of them has to go. So which one?

Re: What happens if....

cassell walks.

Re: What happens if....

BB would figure out a way of getting top dollar for one of the two.

It would probably the best problem to have (in football) ever.

Agreed, and I think we are all dreaming if we think that will really happen :p

Re: What happens if....

Cassel is an FA. We get a compensatory pick when he sign decent contract.

Re: What happens if....

Cassel is a FA after this year. We drafted OC, who will now hopefully get more reps as the #2, and we can use that as a more solid base in developing a backup QB. This is by no means a Brees/Rivers situation. That said, if things start to go south and we get out of playoff contention(I dont think this will happen)you will likely see OC starting. I think our playoff lives have 100% to do with Cassel. Now enough with the QB threads!

Re: What happens if....

I know BB would get a boat load of draft picks for one of them. It would be a great problem to have. I'm just curious if you guys think he would ever trade in Brady for a 5 year younger version not coming back from knee surgery.

I know Brady is probably the best QB of all time and the chances of Cassel ever reaching his level are slim. But anything is possible. I think most coaches would keep Brady and trade Cassel. But with BB I am not so sure. His brilliance is in his ability to treat it like a business and not get emotional.

Re: What happens if....

Trade Cassels to Minnesota for a 2nd and 5th. In a hearbeat!!!!

Re: What happens if....

Cassel is a FA, Brady is a proven commodity. Cassel walks. Although 30 TDs and 3500 yards just isn't going to happen. I'll be extremely happy if we get the same stat line out of Cassel that we got from Brady in 2001: 2800 yards, 18 TDs, 12 INTs.

if cassel would be as good as brady we wouldve seen it in 4yrs of preseason and BB wouldve seen it too. Brady wont go anywhere ,whatever cassell does.

Put cassell behind caldwell and gaffeney and doug gabriel and see what happens.
BB is businessminded , but i read his interview on sportingnews this week and he was asked about brady and he said "let his career play out but he is the best football player he has coached ever"
they are closer than people think inspite of BB's robotic demeanor

Re: What happens if....

the guy said imagine...

I think if BB thinks that cassel is the equivalent of brady, he trades brady...

LOL, if BB thinks that Cassel can do that and he is that much younger, he will sign him to a smaller deal then the one brady has, and will ship brady off for at LEAST 2 1st rounders...

I know we're supposed to humor you, but damn those are some awesome stats! 30/15 w/SB43 MVP thrown in? Yikes!

Chris

With those stats? I think Brady comes back to the Back-up role while getting back into shape or maybe an intentional 2 QB rotation.

Be tough to pass on a rebuild when you have 5ish years newer model sitting there.

Odds are if he even has something heading for a .500 season, the Pat's resign him early.

Re: What happens if....

I say if he get's close to 30-15, we trade him, his stock will never be higher. Then we let the next guy take over......

Re: What happens if....

Cassel is a FA next year.

Ok I just saw something that says after 3 years of service they are restricted Free Agents but after 4 years they are unrestricted. So the Pats would have to see resign Cassel this year for any of my imaginary dreamland to occur?

Couldn't we also franchise him and then trade him?

For the record I would stick with Brady but thats my heart speaking. I do however think that next year we are going to be able to get something for Cassel. I don't know why but I just think the kid is going to do well. I'm envisioning a Matt Schaub type of situation.

You should all bow to me. :D

Re: What happens if....

 the Pats already won the SB? I know it feels like February outside, but I'm pretty sure I have yet to even eat my turkey yet? :singing:
