There were times yesterday the Patriots played much too conservatively. I think they should use the exact same playbook they would use if Brady were in there and have some confidence in this kid. If they dont they will lose to a lot of teams, including the Jets next week.

He has everything around him to succeed, except of course, an overated defense that once again nearly let a team drive down in the last 2 minutes to win the game........sorry, i digressed to another thread topic....

Not sure what your talking about here. This time around the defense came up with the stop. When is the last time this defense made a red zone stand to save a game? 2003? 2004?

Last season?

Cassell may be intellectually capable ... perhaps he has better touch than we have seen. However, Cassell does not have a rifle arm ... that's the reality.

Not to nitpick but when your prevent defense gets shredded with 50 seconds left and for a moment has a wideout burning with only green in front of him, I don't know how much you can toot their horn just because they make the stop after that.

Some day you will realize that rifle arms are over rated...

i agree somewhat about the defense but not sure i understand the conservative comment. what did you expect a backup to come in and do after a team wide shock ?plus once brady is out our o line isnt the same for pass blocking. i actually hope they improve and work on their run blocking skills more with the backs we have.

throwing the ball 18 times for one thing. Cassell looked very capable and im just saying if you go into a shell, you take your best weapons out of the game. And for those who say, well, we won...I live in KC, I watch KC, they are AWFUL.. Even if Cassell gets picked off a couple of times, if they play their normal game they win the game 30-17 instead of nearly getting beat.

And about the defense, im not giving the defense kudos for allowing Damon Huard to get the Chiefs to the Patriots 5. puh-leeze, if they had been playing any other offense but the Chiefs, the Patriots would have had to play an OT.

KC has Bowe and Gonzalez as big, quick receivers, plus Larry Johnson who is still a good powerful runner and Damon Huard is the guy people always bring up when they argue, "this is who we SHOULD have as a backup..." I don't think KC is going to be in the top half of the league in offense, but I definitely think they're going to average more than 10 points per game. Holding teams below their average is the sign of a good defense.

Re: Let Cassell open it up. Patriots will go 10-6 or 11-5

Completely disagree.

Get ride of most of the vertical offense, add a lot more quick outs, screens, and slants.

Re: Let Cassell open it up. Patriots will go 10-6 or 11-5

i'd say i disagree with the OP, but i have two pages of posters that did it for me.

Re: Let Cassell open it up. Patriots will go 10-6 or 11-5

Lucky for us, we stocked up on the running game. Consistent running will leave receivers open deep and we still have Welker, and Jordan is a great receiver too.

Pass happy mania never trumps a balanced offense, just ask the Rams, Colts and *gulp* us last year.

Re: Let Cassell open it up. Patriots will go 10-6 or 11-5

Something that needs to considered-

sure, they played a more conservative style when Brady went out, but that's because Cassel hasn't worked with the starting offense previously. There were probably a certain number of plays that he was confident enough in with this group and they ran those. Working with the first team offense in practice will give him time to develop timing and rythym with the receivers, which will in turn open up more options.

Give the kid a chance, it'll be okay.

Re: Let Cassell open it up. Patriots will go 10-6 or 11-5

How exactly did the defense get "shredded"?

You only get shredded if they score. I agree that it was a stupid play, buts it's also the first game of the season. The question you have to ask is if it can be corrected.

KC was a playoff team in 2006 and had a winning record before Johnson went down. My guess is the Dolphins/Raiders and the entire NFC West is much worse than the Chiefs.

Please Kansas City is hideous. Just because the Pats barely escaped overtime against them (at home mind you) doesn't mean they are suddenly a competent team. That they might be better than Miami, Oakland, St Louis, and San Francisco doesn't mean they still don't suck.

When all of the players you put on the field are better than the opponents, except you have a disadvantage at QB, how does that add up to anything other than being conservative making sense?
