Re: Mort:Simms and Rattay sent back

BB is on WEEI right now and says Cassel is the guy. They are not bringing in any other qb's unless it's Gutz because it would take another guy too long to learn the system. So it's Cassel, O'Connel, and maybe Gutz....the end!

Something has to be going on, I can't imagine we're going with just Cassel and O'Connell - and even if we were we'd probably work some guys out just to have a list ready to go in case Cassel gets hurt this week.

Bill is on WEEI now and he just said there is no plan to look at additional backups now. That may change but we have not called anyone although several agents and players have called us... Said Matt and Kevin will be the starter and backup for this weekend, said Gutz is still available and could be a consideration. Talked about how difficult it is to bring in any guy who doesn't know a system. Takes weeks or more to get even a functional familiarity with it, forces you to cut the playbook down by 70-80% just so they can practice. Reiterated that there is not Matt Cassel playbook - he runs the full offense. Will have the normal input any starter has regarding his personal preferences and dislikes based on his comfort level with certain plays.

maybe talking to eagles for feely ? but as per BB on WEEI it would make no sense to have a new QB to come in a learn the system. it will take a few weeks for him to be productive. in think in all likeliness gutz will be back.

I would have thought they'd bring in a 3rd guy to at least get a little familiar with the offense - injuries can happen in bunches. Is Gutierrez eligible for the Practice Squad ? If so that would seem like an obvious move.

Culpepper is the option here. Just a few years ago he was an elite QB.. Unfortunately he had a severe injury that cost him his job in Minn.. He was never fully healed in Miami and really never had a supporting cast, never mind the fact Miami had poor coaching, remember Saban... And lets not get started about Oakland..

Culpepper has the greatest upside of any of the Qb's out there.. He only retired because he wanted a chance to start and no one would offer it to him.. Well he is in the perfect situation here (if he comes), he'll start.. Mark my words, he'll start over cassel by week 5.

we need to just stick with Cassel at this point. We need to run the hell out of the ball and put him in managable passing downs. Look at the Bears/Colts game last night. Bears played good D and ran the ball well. Orton was put into good passing downs ie 3 and 5 or so and he made the passes. Same thing with us now. RUN THE HELL OUT OF THE BALL! look, we have 3 RBs that can run the ball. We can run all day without getting tired if we spell them evenly. We are not going to put up the scoring numbers like last year, but we will still be able to win the majority of our games given our schedule.

Are you even paying attention to this thread? Please refer to the previous posts about BB on WEEI.

I'm marking your words, because it won't happen. He can't get in here and get up to speed and run this offense effectively in a reasonable amount of time, and they won't change the scheme to accommodate him. I'm not sure he could ever run this scheme, honestly.

Re: Mort:Simms and Rattay sent back

i mean as a backup...they must have another backup than the rookie o'connell
Can you access BB's press conference at patriots.com?

He was asked what he would do about QBs and said he had two on the roster.

When asked if he had faith in them, he said if he didn't believe they could do the job they wouldn't be on the roster.

Face it, Cassel is our 2008 QB.

Prepare for this site to be bombarded by Charger, Jet and Colt trolls making fun of our QB and predicting we are doomed. Oh, wait. We're already doing that by ourselves. Never mind, no Charger, Jet or COlts trolls needed.

Several times in the press conference when pressed as to what he would do, he always came back with, "We'll do what is best for the team."

At the end of the conference, when asked yet again about whether or not he worked out players, he said he did not but wouldn't rule it out in the future because he would "do what is best for the team." Then he chuckled and smirked. I loved it.

Not having Randy Moss make him look good and exposing him cost him his job.

He is the total opposite of the type of QB to play here.

BB is more likely to bring in Bernie Kosar than Dante Culpepper.

I am hoping this means culpepper but my friend mentioned Jake Plummer which I find sort of intriguing, maybe we can get his rights from TB fro cheap.

phil simms on WFAN confirmed that chris simms went up there but there was no physical or workout.

You are kidding right? Jake the Snake sucks and hasn't played in what....3 years?

Culpepper is too stupid for the Pats' offense. Even when he was good, the biggest knock on him was that he couldn't read defenses. Now that his skills have deteriorated, why would he be a better option.

I'd rather have Quinn Gray, The Hefty Lefty, Chris Simms, or Tim Rattay over him.

Re: Mort:Simms and Rattay sent back

It means that Cassel is the MAN. They will give him a chance to prove it.

Cassel will be the Man for perhaps ONE game........and after the fans boo him off the field....BB/Pioli will be burning up the phone lines trying to get one of the aforementioned Vets in here......I know what BB said in his press conference......But unless he wants this to be a rebuilding year.......we need someone else besides Cassel in there......Okee is too green.....and obviously BB has NO confidence in Gutz...........Now, someone mentioned run, run, run the ball........OK.....then the defenses will simply stock the line and make Matt C beat them through the air........Cassel did a decent job yesterday against a soft D (although almost got picked 2-3 times).......put him up against a top D....and it will be ugly......If BB sticks with what "We got" right now.......WE are in a rebuilding year......

Its Matt Casell and that is it.. NO DANTE CULPEPPER, we will live and die with Matt Casell

Re: Mort:Simms and Rattay sent back

I smell BS on this. You want me to believe that both these guys travelled halfway cross country to get to Foxboro to be told " oops, we don't need you"???? Even if they didn't. they'd have them throw it anyway. Otherwise, the Pats would look like a two bit operation.
Whoever planted/fabricated the story is playing cya....

Yup. If Belichick didn't hit the panic button back in 2001, when he was a second-year head coach with a lot more to lose, why would he do it now???

The pros don't work this way - to start calling these guys and say "Come up here so you can see about being our starter" then change their minds while the plane is in the air. (Well, maybe the Raiders or the Bengals do.)

Remember how all pre-season folks argued that it was not a problem (from their uninformed viewpoint) to bring in a vet, ANY vet to replace Cassel? Apparently, BB disagrees. Cassel was on EEI this morning talking about the complexities of the offense and that his job was to run the playbook as is. not some Matt Cassel special. Thankfully, last Sunday both he and Moss read the DB coverage on the same page and when Moss broke the route and went long, Cassel hit him with the bomb to get us away from the 2 yd line.

Now I'll flip-flop because now that more castoff vets are available I would consider bringing in one to spend some weeks time learning the system just in case somebody smacks Cassel AD style.

Again Different circumstances , but when Bledsoe did go down, Eric Zeier and some one else was brought in ,but not signed.. I guess we have to go week to week.. Kevin Faulk could be the third QB, freeing up a roster spot for say John Lynch, who is all but retired i think..
