I'm sorry to see Tom Brady go down to injury but these despairing fan reactions are absurd.

Matt Cassel was highly recruited by the biggest football powers after high school.

Matt Cassel is a four year pro groomed by the best there is. Pete Carrol and his pro coaches, in big time Div I college ball at USC. He didn't play, but the training he got in pro formations, was a whole lot better than if he ran the wsihbone or option in college. Matt was then drafted by Belichick and his Superbowl coaches, in the NFL.

He was brought in to play at the end of the first Q, against KC. I don't understand why all the fans think the end of the world has arrived.

He beat out several QBs over the years including Rohan Davey, Vinnie Testaverde, and Matt Gutierez, J T O'Sullivan, (who started for the 49ers), and Chris Redmond. He was judged as adequate to be his #2 QB, on a SB contender, as judged by a great talent evaluator, Bill Belichick.

He only played in two games for any amount of time, as yet. In the Miami game he came back, to tie and tried to win on a two point conversion.

Yesterday, he played more than he ever has. He played for only three Quarters, coming in cold, and went:
13/18, 152 yd, 72.2%, 8.4 ypa, 1TD, 5.6% TD, 0 INTs, for a QB rating of 116.0

Those a star QB ratings.

What is everybody so concerned about? He is now a trained pro QB, ready after four years of pro grooming, who now knows his Offense. Had he played for 4Q, he would have had over 200 hundred yards passing. Those a winning QB numbers.

Once again we will see Bill Belichick pop a rabbit out of his magic top hat, and produce a miracle Star player, out of a end of the draft unheralded selection.

Anyone remember some later second day selections or UDFAs who turned out well? Guys like Jarvis Green, LeKevin Smith, Dan Koppens, Mike Wright, Pierre Woods, Asante Samuel, Steven Neal, Russ Hochstein, Joe Andruzzi, David Givens and oh yes, a QB named Tom Brady as just a small listing? Steven Neal never even played football anywhere, except for the Patriots.

I like your optimism!

Time will tell. It was the Chiefs, after all!

True it was just the chief but if Matt can play as well as he did maybe it will be enough to steal a few wins if we have to.

Curious: what was your reaction when Brady stepped in for the first time after Bledsoe got injured and got his first W?

MC is the QB of my team right now and I am going to support and root for him to do well.

I am actually optimistic because our expectations have come down dramatically.

sorry brady got injured guys, i think you're still a very very capable team with the talent you've got.

good luck during the rest of the season

Re: Unbelievable fan reactions.

oh yeah and i said this when we let brees go for rivers

a qb often plays differently when they get the #1 job

it's a different mindset

some guys play well either way because they're good relief qbs

some , IMO, play better when they know they're the #1

cassell lacks brady's arm, but you don't need a great arm to win in the nfl, rivers arm isn't anywhere near brady's cutlers or favre's , but he's currently 27-10 in his career

so cassell may just step right in and be completely fine with all the talent NE has

Re: Unbelievable fan reactions.

Whether we like it or not, he's our quarterback, and I'm behind him 100%.

Thanks, I think your Chargers and the Colts are better than their showings yesterday. Can you beleive people are talking about these 3 teams being vulnerable after week 1? And who the hell is Dante Rosario?

I was excstatic when Brady stepped in and beat the Colts, but then I'd watched Brady outperform Bledsoe all summer long in training camp in Smitrhfield. I think that BB was overjoyed at the time. The QB Killer and owner's fair haired boy was off the field.

Unfortunately, Matt did NOT play well this pre-season. Fortunately, he did play well in a real NFL game. Bring on the Jets. Git 'em Matt.

dante rosario yeah haha

some noob TE, maybe he'll be another gates lol

anyway, yeah it's week 1, we went 1-3 last year

i'm not worried unless we get beat by denver or oakland

anyway....it's september, we'll see how the league looks after this initial feeling out process

and it seems like this is going to be the worst year for injuries i can recall

This is the worst week for injuries I remember.

My thoughts after week 1 are that New England, Indy, Jacksonville and San Diego have all taken a step back.

I don't yet see a team that looks ready to challenge that big 4. The Bills and Jets are exciting, to their fans, but can they really go deep into the playoffs.

Even with all these injuries and all this uninspired play from the big time contenders, I don't see things playing out much differently than we expected before yesterday.

i think pitt has the talent to challenge, because of their great looking front 7, and the talent they possess on offense.

Of course all fans will support and root for him, but let's be realistic. This isn't the second coming of Tom Brady. However, Belichick isn't injured. Our boys will be ready.

This game will be fun. I hope Brady is there cheering on the sidelines.

Re: Unbelievable fan reactions.

Watch Cassel light it up all year and then leave to go to the Jets in 2009.

As far as fan (or media) reactions go, it just doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what happens on the field and in that regard, the Patriots are still a very good team.
