Back to the Dink and Dunk

I have a feeling BB will implement a more dink and dunk, run first type of offense that he had when Brady first came on. High completion type passes and a vigorous effort to establish a good run game. I think that type of offense was what helped Tom gain confidence in his ability to manage the offense.

It wasn't that long ago we kept hearing about Brady's arm strength and how he was a system QB and all that crap. He didn't start his career as the gunslinging MVP we know him as now. His main targets we're Troy Brown and Kevin Faulk.

We need the run game and the D to step up right now. I think Matt can manage this very underrated yet very talented team to the playoffs. Call me overly optimistic, but that's my opinion. This things not over by a longshot.

I think the opposite -- to a first approximation, runs and deep passes as the staple. Like what Carolina did their Super Bowl year.

That said, I'm sure Welker will catch a lot of passes too.

I think the offense needs to be a combination of the shotgun and spread and the dink and dunk. We MUST run the ball more, no ifs ands or buts. We need high percentage passes that are easy to complete (screens, swings, short passes) but the possibility of a longer strike (15+ yards) to Moss still needs to be there. Moss will have to adjust his game though, IMO, where ball security is the priority opposed to explosiveness. He needs to consistently be there for quick slants like he was yesterday and he will help the offense if he can be at least a part-time possession guy. But the threat of the big play will always be there when he's on the field.

That's what I'm getting at. We'll see some long balls but not as many jump ball prayers like in Miami last year. Move the chains and eat clock. Last year was like an all-out stike first and strike often early type of approach. Without Brady it can't be like that. Moss will get his shots but other teams are going to have to respect the underneath game again.

More or less the same offense we saw in Tom's first 7 seasons.

I always thought we should start running the ball more, even with Brady. Cassel's first pass from inside his own 1 yard line showed we can still be a very versatile style offense as opposed to strictly short intermediate routes. I think we'll continue to see a little bit of everything.

This is great in theory....but since this OL has been VERY poor overall in opening holes for the running game.....don't look for this to dramatically get better. Again, they had a decent game against a very weak DEF yesterday.....will be different against tougher defenses......

I hope you are right. But I fear BB and his offensive staff have a lot of ego invested in their wide-open offense.

BB plays to his strengths and the opponent's weaknesses. We all reveled at 50Tds and MVP and all. Well that was because of the wide open offense fit his players we had. without brady if he things cassell can do it he will emply the same technique.

Brady was in his 2nd year, Cassel is in his 4th. They will run the same playbook, and Matt will have input into the gameplan and playcalls based on what he feels comfortable with just like Brady did.

I don't think they will limit the playbook to dink and dunk only, but short passes and screens have always been a PART of the playbook even with Brady.

2001 is a lot different circumstances. Cassel is expected (by the coaches) to be able to do more than they expected from Brady in 01.
