All you people ragging on Cassel claiming that "he just barely beat the 'worst defense' in the league" how about you read and reply to this. And I am giving this its own thread because you all seem to be ignoring it in the other ones.
DaBruinz said:
1) The Patriots had the ball only 5 times in the second half.
2) One of those 5 times, Cassel took a knee to end the game
3) On the 1st and 4th possession, the Patriots scored.
4) The other two possessions were 3 and outs.
5) The 2nd series was ended when Sammy Morris didn't pick up the blitz properly and missed the late defender who came in on a stunt.
6) The 3rd series was ended when the Patriots, on 2 straight running plays, couldn't pick up 2 yards. In fact, they telegraphed the plays so badly that the chiefs had 9 in the box the 1st time and 9 in the box the second time.
7) The only other play of the 2nd series that Matt Cassel had a direct hand in was the pass to Gaffney, which Gaffney dropped.

So, what more could Matt Cassel have done yesterday?

And this too for good measure:

Since you clearly are an O'Connell fan and think that he's the next big thing and you seem to imply that Cassel was the reason the Patriots almost lost yesterday please answer the following:

1) Was Matt Cassel on the field when either of Randy Moss, Wes Welker or Matt Slater committed their fumbles yesterday?

2) Was Matt Cassel on the field at the end of the game when the secondary broke down and allowed the long completion to Devard Darling?

3) Was Matt Cassel the one responsible for the 2 conscutive 3 and outs in the 4th quarter? You know where the 1st series ended when Morris missed a blitz pick-up on a stunt and the 2nd series where they tried to run the ball 3 straight times only to get stuffed on the 3rd one.

4) Was Matt Cassel the one responsible for the Patriots offense only getting the ball ONCE in the 3rd quarter and allowing the Chiefs to have the ball for roughly 8 minutes and 35 seconds.

I'd love to hear your answers and your explanations.

So, what more could Matt Cassel have done yesterday?

1. gone to med school and cured Tom's knee

or

2. played on the offensive line and prevented the hit.

3. Prevented Faulk from getting in trouble in the offseason, thereby not getting suspended and being there to keep Pollard away from Brady!

Co-sign.

As I said in another thread. If Welker and Moss don't fumble, we beat the Chiefs either 27-10 or 31-10, and Cassel is responsible for 17 of those points. So the "WE ONLY BEAT THE CHIEFS BY 7!!@#" garbage should not be a valid comment by Cassel bashers. He should've come into the game w a lead given those two Brady-led drives were on their way to scoring points before the fumbles.

Re: For all you people ragging on Cassel.. Read this:

I haven't really seen any "Cassell-ragging" going on.

Have I been just missing it?

If anyone was gonna rag the boy, it would have been me, and I certainly think he did a very nice job yesterday. In fact, if he can continue to play at that servicable level, I think we will be okay with him running the show.

Now granted, the Chiefs are not a great team, but they DO have a decent defense, and Cassell was able to keep things running against them.

I like Simms coming in as an insurance policy, but, based on yesterday's performance and certainly his pre-season showing notwithstanding, I think Matt will be fine.

On another note, do we even know FOR SURE that Brady is out for the year?

And, also agreed, Moss' fumble was huge, because it killed a scoring drive. What happened? He didn't even get hit. He just fell down and spit up the ball!

Thats Cassells fault since he scares nobody and teams can load up on our running game.

Just wait until he falls on his face the ballwashers will change there tune drastically.

From all accounts (Except the one that matters in Foxboro) Matt Cassel is my Quarterback now, I'm behind him %100. If BB feels Chris Simms or Tim Rattay or Daunte Culpepper, or the Tooth Fairy gives the team a better chance to win I'll be %100 behind them too.

How is it Cassel's fault that McDaniels called 3 straight running plays? The Chiefs loading the box had NOTHING to do with whether Cassel scared people. It had to do with the Patriots telegraphing the run.

BTW, the people who are defending cassel are not Cassel ballwashers. They are friggin realists who have a better understanding of the game than you do.

I haven't seen a bit of it. I think everybody appreciates how well Cassel handled a tough assignment yesterday.

DaBruinz, speculating on the season-long starting QB situation isn't ragging on Cassel's performance. It's just acknowledging that the position is now up for scrutiny for the first time in a long, long time.

Clearly. Its been going on since last night. All the calls for KO'C.

Nope. We don't know anything about Brady's situation yet.

Re: For all you people ragging on Cassel.. Read this:

Plus don't forget the way Brady won games in 01. His line read just like Cassels did yesterday for many of those games.

If Cassell can manage the team the way he did yesterday the rest of the talent on this team will take over and we will still have a chance albeit the chance is not as great as it was before yesterdays game.

Chip and chair.

Patchick - The threads calling for KO'C to be the starter or calling for Culpepper to be signed have ALL been ragging on Cassel's perfromance. Saying that it was HIS fault that the Pats only won by 7.

I understand that you might not have caught up with all the reading on the subject, but its there and it IS ragging on Cassel.

Also, here are 4 threads (3 of which were started last night and 1 was resurrected from April) where people are saying that Cassel stinks.

Isn't there a thread right on the first sheet opining that somebody else should start as the QB??

Re: For all you people ragging on Cassel.. Read this:

Actually, there are three fairly active threads wanting some other QB to lead. One for Culpepper and two on Kevin O'Connell.

Fair enough -- in that case, shame on 'em.

I think it's worth reevaluating long-term options in this new Brady-less world, but Matt did exactly what you hope a backup QB will do in an emergency situation: he did his job and put his team in position to win.

Re: For all you people ragging on Cassel.. Read this:

I admit that I am a Cassel ragging fan. I don't know if he will

be able to do the job for an entire season but Sunday he did what

was asked of him. He had no interceptions and committed no fumbles.

I suspect that what will be asked of him for the rest of the year will

be to play mistake free football. The Pats will change from a pass

happy team to a team that runs the ball on first and second downs.

Cassel will be brought along slowly just like Tom Brady in 2001.

What is the point of this kind of denial exactly? I'm fascinated by the psychology behind it.

The reason you have a backup is to replace your starter if he goes down. BB had 2 years to find a "better" backup for Tom if he didn't feel Matt was good enough. Just like in 2001 when he didn't look for someone to replace Tom, he's not going to be looking to replace Matt

Patchick - The way you say that its like Brady died. He didn't. He's suffered an unknown injury to his lower left leg. We don't know if it was just a bone bruise or a torn ACL and MCL with Meniscus damage.

I consider "long term" to be more than 1 year. I don't see the long term options being changed unless Brady calls Bill and tell him that, because of the injury, he's retiring effective immediately.

Short term, I see the Patriots evaluating the available QB options and making a decision once more information about Brady's injury has been gathered. If Brady is out for 1-2 of weeks (extreme optimism there), then I don't see the Pats doing anything. If Brady is out more than than 2 weeks, then I see the Pats bringing in a veteran like Simms or Rattay who can be an effective back-up to Cassel. Could that player earn his way onto the field. Yep. If Cassel implodes or gets hurt himself.

But the Patriots, as is their modus operandi, are bringing in Rattay and Simms for physicals and evaluations. Its called, being prepared.
