now I'm not all Mulder and Scully and fake moon landing normally but something feels fishy about this entire thing. The Pats play Cassel this pre-season more than his entire college and pro careers combined and keep him on the roster despite most of the "pundits" and messageboard analysts think he's going to get cut for the younger (more promising?) Gootz; even though Brady doesn't look in any way injured whenever he's seen on/off the field. They also keep 5 backs on the roster, which most view as a bit unusual, seemingly setting up for a more ground based attack this season. The only thing anyone talks about all pre-season is the backup QB position...more backup QB talk than anytime in history it seems.

then we have the first game of the season and Brady is gone, most likely for the season, before the second qtr even starts.....just feels fishy for some reason

Are you saying the NFL is theatrical like wrestling?

Friend,

You really need to get back on your meds.....

Respects,

I think that you are on to something here. Just what, I don't know.

I've been on something since halfway through the first quarter of yesterdays game. :(

Yeah, they probably inserted a "kick stand" joint into Brady's knee just before the game so that we'd all get to see it bend horrifically in order to "sell us" on it.

Just playing the odds, I bet. And that gives BB even more cred.

1) The Pats could have been playing Cassel more this pre-season because they were auditioning him for other teams in hopes of trading him.

2) The Patriots don't have 5 backs on the roster YET. Faulk is suspended currently so he doesn't count. The number of backs and the running game won't mean squat if McDaniels continues to telegraph the plays they way he did in the 2nd half.

3) There was more "back-up QB talk" in 2000 and in 2001 than there has been this year. Most people were calling for Michael Bishop at the time though.

If BB was playing the odds I hope he takes us all to Vegas ;)

Wacky conspiracy theory time.

Before the season Bill decides

1) Cassel needs more in game experience and practice in case Brady gets injured
2) That last years ultimate downfall was the pressure of an undefeated season.

Bill decide that the first time Tom gets hit he is to fake an injury. Cassel plays until he loses a game, then Tom returns the following game, lacking any pressure to go undefeated this season.

Tom was in the locker room watching the game on TV. But is disappointed he won't get to face the Jets.

The rest is a giant rouse.

Haha, I won't go as far as you and say there's something going on, but also remember we drafted a QB in the 3rd round... thought a strange move at the time, but what happens if Brady never comes back to the same form and O'Connell steps in in a couple years. It may not be a conspiracy, but it sure is one of those odd sequences of events...

If we can somehow weave "That ex Jets employee", space aliens, 9/11 & 12/12/12 into this thread then everything would be perfect.

Anything looked at from the right angle can look fishy. However looking at the injury from every angle looked authentic. Besides you have to look at all of the other factors pointed out by the previous replies.

Get your tin foil hats out and look out for the black helicopters, aliens just abducted Robert Kraft.

Let's see...

Brady's knee was hit by a defender named Pollard. We recently cut a TE named Pollard. TE is the NYSE code for TECO Energy, Inc. TECO's stock is currently sitting at 16.2, which is how many points per week Brett Favre got in fantasy last year... Favre plays for the Jets!

IT'S ALL THE JETS FAULT!

The only strange thing to me was the consuming focus on making the preseason belong to Matt Cassel. Yes we saw O'Connell and Gutz but to me they were out there pretty much as we'd expect rookie/backup QB's to be. A few plays, a quarter, etc.

The preseason was ALL Matt Cassel. I think finding and drafting a rookie QB who was actually GOOD threw a bit of a monkey wrench into what should otherwise have been a pretty routine preseason QB weed-out. O'Connell was a good pick, and iirc 08's draft boasted some good QB's. It was time to start thinking ahead and the Pats liked O'Connell. Simple as that.

I don't think offseason/preseason indicates anything conspiratorial but putting everything into context it can be seen as a little swami-ish. Maybe Tom was more beat up than we knew about. We'll never know, that's for sure but my gut tells me last year changed some things.

NEM, is that you?

What's scary is that I agree that Josh must have been in shock or something with the run calls.

Damb Mangini, I just knew it had to be his fault!!!

Maybe we have to look closer.... maybe we can trace this back to Bill Parcelles... He's the one behind it all. Parcelles went to the Jets, Bledsoe goes down, now he enters the Dolphins front office and Brady gets hurt... hmmmmm

As I was sitting in a stunned silence, a terrible conspiracy theory popped into my head:

The Eagles winning the Super Bowl. Over the Jets.

That would get Spector off of Goddell's back.

This just made me more depressed so I let the thought go and started drinking instead.
