OT: Redskins @ Giants Game Discussion (2008 NFL Kickoff)

redskins looked tottaly unorganized and the coach really did look like he was doing this for the first time. not only did they not no huddle, they continued to try and run the ball way to late. then they should have taken john maddens advice and kicked a FG, tried for an onside kick, and then throw a hail mary. The giants looked good for most of the first half but the offense had some red zone problems and in the second half they made some bad mistakes.

Screw Colt Brennan, they should sign Matt Gutierrez. Now there was a QB who looked large and in charge against 3rd stringers.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Did Colt Brennan ever run with the 1st team offense in the preseason?

He did get some run with the first team, minus Clinton Portis, in their last preseason game, if I remember correctly. Campbell only played a series, and they liked what they saw from Brennan enough to move him ahead of Collins for that game to have a look what he'd do with the big boys. He acquitted himself fairly well. Not spectacular, but he's a rookie, and the most important thing is that it was clear that he understood the offense and could keep things running smoothly.

I agree with you Keegs what a pathetic performance. At the beginning of the forth quarter the Redskins should have started with the no huddle. Try anything to get into an offensive rhythm, they did nothing.

It is more the coach's fault than Campbell but Jason wasn't very good. I saw him basically slide into Tuck early in the game and his throws were pretty damn awful. And he insisted on throwing to receivers 5 yards in front of the 1st down marker on 3rd down. I can't even imagine how irritated Redskins fans were from watching that trash.

Also, couldn't Campbell change the plays when they were running HB Dive down 2 scores with 3 minutes left?

One game does not a season make, but that first half for the G-Men was about as impressive as you could ask for. Sure, they should have been up 28-0, but a win in your opener to start your season is nothing to sneeze at. It was great watching/hearing all the Peyton/Eli stuff. How did you guys like the side by sides of the Manning brothers holding those trophies?? The other thing I really like to harken back on is how many were on the "how many G-Men could start on our Patriot team" rant last year. LOL. By the end of the year, the Giant fans will be here asking you guys that same question

It was football, anyway. I think once Eli got picked he started to get squeamish, seemed to me. I think the SB is over and their QB is going to make them look iffy again.

Remember, he also threw two more INTs that were dropped. Not a very good showing for Eli. Jacobs and Burress made the offense look good.

Very true. Jacobs and Burress were looking pretty amazing. But I just thing no passing or running TD's aside of the QB scramble. To me, that's not a strong showing by a SB champ. Points are points, but if Eli hadn't escaped that one time, the KC D would've been very Patriots-like (in general) in not allowing TD's in spite of allowing yardage.

I'm pretty sure the Giants fans will be busy on their own boards wondering why their supposed champions are scrubs that can't win 9 games or make the postseason.

Of course his teammates made him look good. He's a Manning, and we have a very difficult time giving a Manning any credit. This is a case where Manning and his receivers in some cases were not on the same page. Toomer was supposed to (or Eli anticipated) him cutting his route off, turning in, and making a TD catch. Plax totally caught off guard on one throw (that Madden said he wasn't open on). These are isues that will be ironed out as they get more reps together. far as I know, Eli was present and accounted for throughout camp.

Either he has some amazing ability to give opposing secondaries butterfingers, or it'll start catching up to him. I'm betting on the latter, and combined with their numerous important personnel losses, I'm saying 8-8. We'll see what happens.

Both teams looked like garbage last night. I want to say that Eli was either rusty or he's reverting back to his old ways but either way he looked terrible. 'Skins dropped three would-be interceptions and caught another. If all of those were caught, Manning would have had one of the worst nights ever as a pro quarterback. Just sloppy all the way around. The only unit that looked great on the field at times was (of course) the Giants defense. It doesn't even appear as if they have skipped a beat losing both Strahan and Umenyiora.

Well, I switched off at half-time and I'm glad I did.

I'd had as much Manning/Superbowl stuff as any human being should be expected to stand.

Boy, did Spagnuolo make a good decision. Having to take over a franchise with an inadequate quarterback, co-ordinators in place, a Vice-President of Football (or whatever) who has no record of success -- and an interfering owner. Not where you want to start as a head coach.

Eli just has had an inordinate amount dropped, to his great benefit, since the Giants went on their run. He could have coughed up the games against the Cowboys and Packers had they held onto his errant passes, not to mention the two easy and one difficult opportunity for picks in the game winning Superbowl drive. Any of those are caught, and we're talking about how Eli is still trying to prove himself. I don't think I've ever seen such a run of luck by a quarterback in that department in all my years watching football. It's bound to turn around, and when it does, if he isn't taking better care of the ball, eventually people will catch on that he's still the same Eli.

I think that's one of two things. Either he throws a bullet which is hard to hang on to unless you know when it's coming, or he doesn't throw a tight spiral. I haven't watched a lot of him, but I would guess it's the latter, as his other receivers (besides Burress) seem to drop their fair share too.

Well, I don't know. Not sure where you can get stats on dropped picks. Certainly, easier to forget the ones that benefit the hometown QB, and easier to remember the ones that hurt the hometown team. I guess I have always been a little lenient when it comes to QB's and how I see them in terms of talent. TB and PM are the cream of the crop, another level if you will, but O think there are plenty in the league that have the talent and ability to win consistently. Eli is one of those guys.
