After their annual restructuring of cap-heavy contracts last spring, the Redskins were No. 1 in the league in spending, in terms of committed cash, at $747 million since 2000, which includes the season under Schottenheimer. The Indianapolis Colts were second at $710 million and the Baltimore Ravens ($708 million), Dallas Cowboys ($700 million) and New England Patriots ($694 million) completed the top five. Indianapolis, Baltimore and New England each have won at least one Super Bowl during that span. In dead salary cap space, the term for money still allocated to players no longer on the team, the Redskins were first since 2000 at $83 million, according to the records. Washington was followed by the 49ers and Denver Broncos ($80 million), Tennessee Titans ($78 million) and Oakland Raiders ($75 million).

This is one of those years (2006 was another one), where the team just seemed to be dead-set against spending money. Every one of their free agents came at or near the veteran minimum, with the exception of John Lynch, who was cut last week because the team reportedly didn’t like his finances (a guaranteed $1.5 million salary if he’s on the Week 1 roster). The Pats are around $7 million under the cap, so they have the room. Yet Donte Stallworth (a cap charge of under $2 million in Cleveland this year) has been replaced by the likes of C.J. Jones, Sam Aiken and Ray Ventrone. What’s up with that?

I don't know a lot about CAP. But I think we would have had to sign Stallworth for more than a year so we might have it this year but who knows about next year? The money is better off given to Wilfork and getting a good CB.

Thats true, but I would have liked if we could keep Donte around. He was not all he was hyped to be, but he would be an awesome 4th wr. Moss, Gaff, Welker and Stallworth (after a year of working with Brady)? Thats a deep wr core.

Because you don't pay $5M for your #4 receiver when you're paying less than that for your #2 and #3 receivers combined.

I actually think Stallworth is a great receiver. He just didn't fit the Patriots scheme. Moss gave us what we wanted from him. I think S-worth helps create opening in the middle for Welker because he is a deep threat. Which is why i wanted the Pats to keep Jackson. The only deep threat we have now is Mo$$.

i think a receiverś reputation also matters. Without stallworth , whoever replaces him is going to be ignored until they make equally good plays. he had some critical plays for us. the catch against the colts on the sidelines, the TD against the cowboys...

Well the jury is out on Stallworth - though it does seem like he couldn't handle the routes he was asked to run here. It will be interesting to see how he does with the Browns... my contention was that at the very least he was a very good deep threat but others feel he didn't even offer that.

The bottom line is that he wasn't coming back with the contract he signed that would have required us to give him $6 million - which was a logical contract for he and the Pats to agree to when it looked like he'd be the #1 WR - once Moss signed on it became apparent that unless he had a moster season he'd move on to another contract - and no way were we going to match what the Browns paid either.

Why? Jones and Ventrone could turn out to suck. They have done nothing for this team.

Just because he is getting under 2M against the cap for the Browns this year does not mean he would have done the same for us.

He took that deal after we cut him.

He was signed to a contract that was either a 1year deal and cut ties or it turned into a sweetheart deal for him, paying him far more than he was worth. We would have had to get him to renegotiate or cut him and then attempt to resign him.

I don't think he would have been inclined to give us a great deal.

Besides, Gaffney overtook him in play last year.
