I'm hoping Claussen and J.Locker return for their senior years. Both are 3rd year juniors. They could go very early this year. But, could go 1-2 next year. Throw in R.Mallett who is a 3rd year soph. Next year's qb draft looks great. If the Raiders pick is in the Top 3, we can trade down a couple of spots and pick up an extra 2 and a 1st in 2012. Look at the potential rebuilding job we should be able to complete.

2009 7-9 players.
2010 4 picks 1st 2 rounds.
2011 4 picks 1st 2 rounds(given my trade scenario)
2012 3 picks 1st 2 rounds(extra 1 given trade.

Coming on the heels of their positional rankins, Tony Pauline and TFYdraft today came out with a full 7 round mock draft:

TFY

They have the Pats picking #28 and have us taking (juniors with an asterix):

28. Jahvid Best*, RB, Cal
40. Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
48. Tyson Alualu, DE, Cal
60. O'Brien Schofield, DE/OLB, Wisconsin
124. Shawn Lauvau, OG, Arizona St.
188. Rahem Alem, DE, LSU
213. Armanti Edwards, QB, Appalachian St.

Not a draft that I like. Some other noteworthy picks:

5. Oakland - Carlos Dunlap*, DE, Florida
8. Tennessee - Rolando McClain*, ILB, Alabama
12. Denver - Terrance Cody, DT, Alabama
13. Miami - Everson Griffen*, DE, USC
14. SF - Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
15. NY Jets - Carmeron Heyward*, DE, Ohio St.
19. NY Giants - Derrick Morgan*, DE, Georgia Tech - I would hate for this to happen
21. Philadelphia - Brandon Spikes, ILB
25. Arizona - Bruce Campbell*, OT
26. Pittsburgh - Maurkice Pouncey*, C, Florida
27. Dallas - Taylor Mays, S, USC
34. Cleveland - Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
35. Detroit - Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho
36. Tampa Bay - Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri
37. Oakland - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
47. NY Jets - Eric Norwood, LB, South Carolina
62. Minnesota - Vince Oghobasse, DE, Duke
65. St. Louis - Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
80. Jacksonville - Arthur Jones, DE, Syracuse
119. Denver - Dexter McCluster, RB/WR, Mississippi
131. Detroit - Greg Hardy, DE, Mississippi
181. Philadelphia - Zoltan Mesko, P, Michigan
189. Cincinnati - LeGarrette Blount, RB, Oregon

Hardy going 4th round is ridiculous, injury history or not.

Juniors who are left out (who I assume TFY thinks won't declare) include:

- Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, USF
- Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh
- Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
- Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
- Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno St.
- Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
- Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia
- Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
- Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa
- Lawrence Marsh, DE, Florida
- Earl Wilson, S, Texas

I think it's unlikely that all of those guys stay in school. I also think Carlos Dunlap will slip due to inconsistency.

Tony Pauline from TFYdraft (who also writes for CNNSI) is one of the better draftniks around IMHO, after Rick Gosselin and Nolan Nawrocki. TFYdraft has just published their positional rankings, with some interesting choices.

DE

This position covers a wide range of guys, from guys who project to 3-4 DEs to guys who project to 3-4 OLB, as well as classic 4-3 DEs.

At the DE position, Pauline ranks Greg Hardy #1, Greg Romeus of Pittsburgh #2, Jason Pierre-Paul #3, and Ricky Sapp #4, ranking all as 1st round picks. Pauline notes that Pierre-Paul is likely to come out this year.

Pauline's 5-9 DEs include Corey Wooton, Cameron Heyward, Carlos Dunlap, Derrick Morgan, and Jeremy Beal. That seems low for Morgan, who has been shooting up draft boards and looks like a sure top-20 pick at the moment. Pauline thinks Heyward (son of Ironhead Heyward, and a fabulous 3-4 DE prospect at 6'6" 290#) is likely to stay for hwspis senior year, but that Morgan and Dunlap are coming out. He considers Beal a "fast, athletic end best in a conventional system", though Beal originally came to Oklahoma as an OLB prospect. And he ranks Everson Griffen #15 among DE prospects (2nd-3rd round), and Adrian Clayborn #35 (5th round prospect).

An interesting prospect to watch is Cal junior DE Cameron Jordan (son of former Minnesota TE Steve Jordan), 6'4" 287#, who could be a good 5 technique prospect. Pauline ranks him #14 (2nd-3rd round).

TFY

OLB

Pauline ranks Jerry Hughes (1st round), Sergio Kindle (1st/2nd round) and Eric Norwood (2nd round) as his top 3. Interestingly, he has Sean Weatherspoon ranked as a 2nd round pick at #6.

Many of the guys listed under the DE group could end up as 3-4 OLBs, including Ricky Sapp and Jeremy Beal.

TFY

DT

Many of these guys project to 3-4 DE, as do some of the DE prospects (Cameron Heyward, Corey Wooton, Cameron Jordan, possibly Adrian Clayborn.

Not surprisingly, Pauline has Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy and Terrance Cody as the top 3 DTs. He has Arthur Jones (#4) as a first rounder, and Jared Odrick (#5) and Marvin Austin (#8) as borderline 1st/2nd rounders, with Vince Oghobasse (#10) as a projected 2nd round pick.

Mid round guys of interest who project to 3-4 DE include Lawrence Marsh of Florida (#21, projected 3rd-4th round) and Brandon Deaderick of Alabama (#26, projected 5th round).

TFY

ILB

The only interesting thing here is that Pauline lists Brandon Spikes #1 as a 1st round prospect, and Rolando McClain #2 as a borderline 1st/2nd. I see that as being the reverse of what is likely to happen. The only other ranking of interest is that Pauline projects Iowa MLB Pat Angerer as a FA prospect, ranking him #29.

TFY

OT

Pauline ranks Rutgers OT Anthony Davis #2 after Russell Okung. My 2 favorite guys, Maryland junior Bruce Campbell (#8) and LSU junior Joseph Barksdale (#11), are both projected as 3rd round prospects, which seems low. Pauline ranks Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi #6 and projects him to the 2nd round, but calls him "solid pass protecting LT", whereas Carimi seems to be a pure RT or possibly even OG prospect.

TFY

OG/C

Among OG's Pauline ranks Idaho's Mike Iupati 1st, as his only projected clear 1st day pick (borderline 1st/2nd round). He doesn't even list Stanford OG Andrew Phillips, who has been destroying people.

Pauline lists Maurkice Pouncey #1 among center prospects and projects him as a 1st round pick. He only projects Penn St. center Stefan Wisniewski and USC center Kris O'Dowd (#9) as 5th-6th round picks, which seems ridiculous.

TFY
TFY

RB

Pauline projects Jonathan Dwyer, Jahvid Best, CJ Spiller and Ryan Mathews as his top 4 backs, with Dwyer and Best as 1st round picks. He projects Anthony Dixon (#8) and Toby Gerhart (#9) as 3rd-4th round picks, Dexter McCluser (#21) as a 4th-5th round pick, and LaGarrette Blount as a 7th round pick.

TFY

Looking at my priorities for the offseason and draft after the Colts game, I feel more strongly than ever about focusing on the following areas:

Looking at my priorities for the offseason and draft after the Colts game, I feel more strongly than ever about focusing on the following areas:

1. The pass rush. The pass rush. The pass rush. We need at least one bona fide rushing threat. Preferably 2. Indy showed how hard it is to stop both Freeney and Mathis. We shut down Freeney and Mathis killed us. I'd like to see us use 2 of our day 1 picks on pass rushers. Michael Johnson was huge for Cincinnati yesterday against Pittsburgh. It would have been nice to have someone like that. Derrick Morgan (an unstoppable force), Greg Hardy, Everson Griffen, Carlos Dunlap and Jason Pierre-Paul are all day 1 prospects who could play DE and the elephant, and provide a power rush. Sergio Kindle, Jerry Hughes, Jeremy Beal, Ricky Sapp and Eric Norwood could all provide a speed rush off the edge as 3-4 OLBs.

2. The power run game and the right side of the OL. I put these together. Vollmer is going to be a stud at LT, and if we can re-sign or franchise Mankins then the left side of our OL will be studly. But the right side is a weakness, with Neal aging and injury prone and Kaczur serviceable but no better. We found a franchise LT picking at #58 in the draft last year. I'd like to see us use two of our other picks on a stud RT, RG or running back. Jonathan Dwyer and Ryan Mathews continue to look good. Toby Gerhart is intriguing. As for the OL, it should be a lot easier to find an RT and/or RG in the second round than a franchise LT. Mike Iupati, Maurkice Pouncey, and Gabe Carmini are all attractive. I think LSU junior Joseph Barksdale could be another Vollmer on the right side. Jason Fox and Jeff Linkenbach would probably both be upgrades over Kaczur at RT. Bruce Campbell from Maryland is probably wasted on the right side, and Vollmer currently looks too good to consider moving to the right side long term.

3. The run defense. We need more depth on our DL. Obviously, having Green and Warren injured hurt a lot, and Pryor and Brace should only get better. But I'd like to see us pick up another bona fide 3-4 DE. Cameron Heyward, Leonard Marsh, Arthur Jones, Jared Odrick, Adrian Clayborn, Corey Wootton, Vince Oghobasse, and Brandon Deaderick are all options. Someone good will slip to the early 3rd round, and we should look to trade up. If we use a day 1 pick on DL then we should look at picking up an OL, RB or pass rusher in the early 3rd round. With the depth likely to be available in this draft, there will be day 1 talent (even late 1st round talent) slipping to the 3rd round.

Our weaknesses burned us against the Colts. Mathis hurt us on the right side. We couldn't power run in the 4th quarter. Our DL wore down and couldn't stop the run in the 4th quarter. And above all we couldn't get enough pressure on Manning.

If BB wants to upgrade over O-line with some serious drive blockers with good technique and power, then Stanford is the place to look. I really like OT Marinelli, good burst, good explosion and he moves the player in front of him. Pass blocking needs work.

Stanford QB Luck is a future top 10 pick if he stays healthy.

SOOOO glad we didn't draft this raw combine superstar.
For comparison/perspective, another 2nd round pick Patrick Chung only started getting major playing time the past three games after playing behind Meriweather/McGowan/Sanders, and for the season has 20 tackles, 1 int, and 2 sacks.
