Recently ESPN ran a column and poll about what team was the most hated. This made me ask myself why exactly do fans "hate" another team and/or their fans?

The other team wins; that prevents their favorite team from winning. The hate is born from envy of those accomplishments. Fans are far more likely to hate an opponent that they fear they will lose to than one they are confident they will defeat.
