Welcome to snowy Gillette
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
December 16, 2007 08:32 AM
FOXBOROUGH -- Welcome to Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots host the Jets today (1 p.m.). If the current weather conditions continue, this will be a game defined by how the teams deal with the elements.
It is snowing, and there are considerable wind gusts. The temperature is currently 28 degrees. The forecast indicates that the snow is expected to turn to rain shortly before kickoff.
The field is currently covered by a green tarp and four plows are now pushing snow off the tarp. Workers are also clearing off seats, which are blanketed with snow.
While driving into the stadium, one might have thought visibility would have been an issue, but that doesn't appear as if it will be a concern for the teams.
In terms of analysis, these conditions would seemingly favor the Jets. Because the Patriots have such a proficient passing game, the conditions are going to make it challenging to execute.
We'll be passing along updates throughout the day.

Pats toss first shutout of the season. Slot receivers will have a big day. Faulk and Welker. Moss and Stallworth will be dangerous on quick slants. They are anyway. But, if the db slips. They could take it all the way.
maybe we practice a little running agaisnt the jets?
u know, just to show everyone we just MIGHT be able to run, Ha Ha, so they are not all THAT surprised when we run all over them in the playoffs
SeanBruschi54
12-16-2007, 08:52 AM
If everyone is saying we do a lot of screen passes and slants then why is Maroney left out of the conversation?
Everyone saw how dangerous he was when catching the ball.

i dont like this at all..sorry.
-its gonna be pretty windy with precip
that effects Brady and his throws (we saw the winds in baltimore)
-our run game hasnt been great and our OL has some trouble..going up against a big defense in terms of size..the advantage goes to the D
-our run D has been very disappointing, Jets run game has gotten better recently and in the snow..im worried

Has Brady ever gone to gloves in inclement weather?
Turnovers will be the biggest stat of the day. Well, of course, besides the score. ;)

Has Brady ever gone to gloves in inclement weather?
He wore gloves on and off in 2002 and maybe afterwards. There was a stretch when he wore them all the time, but they proved to be not effective for him. But yeah, he can wear them.

My big worry is that sleety, cold conditions = many turnovers. That plays to the Jets' favour if they can fluke a few TDs out of it.

Ok, let's get this outta the way first. Who will go out and predict that Maroney breaks out for 100 yards rushing? The weather conditions discourage passing and the Jets have the the #30 ranked rushing defense in the NFL. Go ahead, get it out of your system, make the prediction!

Fwiw, the Pats are +18 in the TO margin, while the Jets are -3.
I agree the weather could force fluke things to happen, but the Jets are far more inconsistent at hanging onto the ball and/or forcing turnovers.

OLB Mike Vrabel, who was questionable on the Patriots' latest injury report due to his thigh, has taken the field in his game pants and loosened up by cutting back and forth. No medical/training staff was present as Vrabel warmed up, a sign that he is likely to play today.
At this time, no other players are on the field.

The Jets mindset coming into this one, per Wendi Nix on ESPN: "We just want to come in, play the game, get out of here, and close this chapter." Conditions be damned, does this sound like a team that is ready to come in and put up a fight? So instead of dreaming for the obscene (63-3, or something), we expect the ordinary (24-3 or something of that ilk). Won't be pretty, but shouldn't be too terribly difficult...
I believe that the Pats have decided to run just enough to keep opposing defenses honest.
Passes yield more yards per attempt.
So you pass to put the opponent in 5 or 6 DBs then you run.
But Maroney will see his 100 this week and next.
So I am a believer.

Greetings, all, from rainy Manhattan, home to millions of miserable Jets fans.
i'm foregoing my usual Pats/Jets pregame routine of walking around my midtown block in a Hoodie and opting for hot chocolate with my kids, who are going stir crazy. i will, of course, take my traditional, "hoodied" victory lap along Second Avenue after we demolish the jests.
I just checked a couple of weather forecasts for Fboro this afternoon and they call for light rain (1/4--1/2"), temps in the low-mid thirties, with winds from 20--29mph. definitely not balmy, but also not as bad as we might have thought yesterday. i think the pats will put up at least 30 and that brady will get at least two of his 5 td passes...

LOL, I'm used to his nonsense by now so I'm not worried. I just want to see the Patriots win big today. The weather is going to make things a little iffy though.
But you've gotta admit, these ARE just about the perfect conditions for emphasizing the run game. Bad weather and bad run defense team (#30 overall).
