Welcome to Baltimore
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
December 3, 07 04:14 PM

BALTIMORE -- Welcome to M&T Bank Stadium, where the Patriots visit the Ravens tonight (8:30 p.m.).

The first thought that comes to mind is wind. While the temperature is currently 40 degrees, and should remain close to that by kickoff, there is considerable wind that makes it feel cooler. That wind, which has the flags atop the stadium rippling with force, figures to play a factor in both the passing game and kicking game tonight.

A few quick items to pass along:

ESPN.com's Mike Sando (http://myespn.go.com/profile/hashmarks?tag=patriots-ravens) is here and he's blogging tonight. Take a look and chances are you will learn something about the Patriots you didn't know.

Walt Anderson gets the call as referee tonight. We'll plan on passing along updates throughout the night.

what a waste mike sando is to look up stats of going for it on 4th and 1. Only ESPN can beat a dead horse for no reason. Cant they understand a basic thing that kicking a FG is more insulting . ???

and when we do kick it we are piking it on i can see it now "they should have gone for it and give the defense a chance to stop them" they all have agendas just learn to acept it

Something I found interesting on the ESPN blog, particularly given the downer climate on the board this past couple of weeks:

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando from Baltimore

The Ravens have won games in recent seasons thanks largely to their success in the draft -- but not so much recent drafts. The team's draft record since 2003 has left the Ravens to rely heavily on players drafted more than five years ago, notably Jonathan Ogden, Chris McAlister, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

The chart below shows the players Baltimore has made top-100 overall picks since 2003. These players have started 188 of 810 possible regular-season games, or 23.2 percent.....

.....The Patriots had the same number of top-100 choices during this span (14). Teams determine the value of each pick using a point system. The Ravens' top-100 picks since 2003 carried a value nearly identical to the value of the Patriots' top-100 picks during this time.

And yet those players chosen by New England have started 308 of 879 possible regular-season games, or 35 percent. Advantage, Patriots.

Bottom line: The Patriots and Ravens have each chosen 14 players among the top 100 overall picks since 2003. These picks had roughly the same total value on draft day, but the players New England selected have started 120 more games.

So, who's on the inactives tonight? Will Troy Brown play? I say YES!
Windy, short passing game. Troy an asset.

CHFF's points out the Ravens' strength:

Would you believe the Ravens boast the third best run defense of the Super Bowl Era (based upon yards per attempt)?

Believe it.

Baltimore surrenders a mere 2.76 YPA on the ground. Since 1966, only two teams were stingier against the run: the 1998 Chargers (2.70 YPA) and, yes, the mighty 2000 Ravens (2.69 YPA).

http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_1894_Gridiron_Grid%3A_New_England_vs._Baltimore .html

So, if that wind gets too fierce for the passing games, this could turn into a pretty brutal slugfest.

*ESPN Monday Night Football ad appears*

Remember that night the Giants were whooping up on the Cowboys, and your wife started making out with her co-worker? You never thought they'd find his body but they did. This Monday night when the Ravens take on the Patriots, be sure to have a better alibi.

We'll be back shortly with more hard evidence relating to the Patriots' alleged attempts at running up the score (previous items here and here). We should also have some information about players named inactive for the game tonight.

i guess this is the task ESPN's editor has given this blog writer to dig up so anyone following the blog can read it more and more and more..

Well McGahee better have a special game up his sleeve then, because this Pats D is built to stop the run. That's why our DL and LBers are so big pound for pound.
