Welcome to RJS
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
TAMPA, Fla. -- Welcome to Raymond James Stadium, where the Patriots visit the Buccaneers tonight in preseason action (7:30 p.m. ET).
It is hot and sticky, with overcast skies. There is a chance of showers.
The first Patriots bus arrived here at 4:30 p.m. Long snapper Lonie Paxton and defensive end Mike Wright are the first players to take the field.
A large pirate ship is hard to miss in the end zone. One note to pass along: every two years, the NFL Players Association conducts a survey of players rating the best playing fields in the NFL. This natural grass surface ranked No. 1 in the most recent survey.
More to come throughout the night.

I'd like to make note here that somehow during training camp I've managed to work my way up from "Third Team and special teams" to "Second Team and Threatening Starter's Job." We must have had a rash of injuries on this board or something.

Holder in focus
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
Kicker Stephen Gostkowski went through his warmups, with backup quarterback Matt Cassel doing all the holding.
Veteran punter Josh Miller is the incumbent holder. But Miller is in a fight for the punting job with youngsters Danny Baugher and Tom Malone, so the Patriots must consider that when assessing the holding duties.
This will be one area to watch for tonight.

The Patriots have taken the field for stretching and warmups and running back Laurence Maroney is not present. That likely means veteran Sammy Morris will get the initial carries.

They must have heard you - they toughened up into the bend but don't break. I think they probably sat too long in this heat during our last drive, and the QB change caught them a little flat. But they made the adjustment and tightened 'er up.

Not too worried about the second team defense. How often will they be out there as a group this season? I hope it isn't ever unless we are way ahead. No, he had no time on that last play because the right side collapsed. He was exceptional under pressure in the first quarter. He lost a nice reception on Reche's penalty and then another on a beautifully placed throw that Reche looked too slow to get under. Moss or Stallworth would have had that one for a TD.
He's lookin a little gimpy since the QB sneak. Looked like he took a helmet hit to the hip or thigh area and he's been feeling it a little ever since. Hope it's just a bruise.

Oops... He is looking pretty good scrubs on scrubs. Seems to have decent composure. Throws a pretty accurate ball with some zip on it, just got a little nervous and put too much air under that last one. He's made a couple of questionable throws - the kind BB winces at - but the PI and Bam saved his bacon. Yeah, he's made his highlight film. Unfortunately, most of it is out of bounds.
Some might disagree, but I bet Rodgers, Mays and Lua might need to keep the tape of this game to show their grandkids.
Rodgers made lots of plays, so what if they made some big runs outside him cardinal sin, got to stay in your lane on this team.
Lua hits hard, but hits with no wrap up and spinning a QB around instead of burying him don't make it for an ILB.
Mays just looks lost.
I predict (jumping to conclusions, obviously) 1 of three makes it at all, either PS or STs. Hopefully their play in future exhibitions changes my mind.
Richardson made 2 good plays in a row, Mills looks agile.
Santonio Thomas, who won't make nothing, continues to look better than the young LBs (who have a real shot), IMO. Oh well.
What's a Quinton Smith and why can't we have one?

Obviously not a comprehensive analysis, but that's just such a big no no on this team. Could be, he gets a talking to and looks great.
On the other hand, it could be why he was "always around the ball" early.
