Finally home! Here's the first report. Not sure if I should post the blog link each session or post the body here but for the first one here goes.

TC Opening Session 8:45-10:45 July 27, 2007

Just got home from the first training camp session of the 2007 season. I’m starting off with my usual disclaimers just so that we’re all on the same page. First off, I’m just a fan who is passionate about her team and attends camp each day. I’m not a member of the “media” and don’t have a press credential nor access to the any of their team generated paperwork. I sit on the hill and write what I observe and what I feel; I may not always get it right and never claim to be a football guru as I am still learning something every day.

Admittedly, I considered forgoing posting reports this year because there are so many other sources reporting (and posting) directly from camp that by the time I get home, most has already been said, but due to the overwhelming response from fellow fans to continue I decided to do so. Of course, I may not have anything new to add except my perspective but that’s the best I can.

I haven’t read anybody else’s stuff at this point yet so I don’t know what’s already been covered but decided to instead to take this time to make my post so here we go… Let Mrs. B’s Training Camp Reports begin!

* I attended the session with Big Al and my son Jake and headed out early to have plenty of time to settle in to my usual spot on the hill. The south entrance at P8 was not clearly marked as being the Training Camp entrance so we missed it and needed to go around to P1 and enter from the north. We parked in front of the West Suites where the Patriots Experience is usually set up. I didn’t see it anywhere so perhaps it hasn’t started yet.
* The place was completely MOBBED, with the stands, lower hill and upper hill completely full. Naturally, I sat by the media tent on the grass at the top of the hill while Al made his way down to the ropes to take pictures.
* Guys were in full pads with Maroney and Seau wearing red no contact jerseys. (Naturally, the QBs were in red as well which is the norm.)
* Everyone was sporting a #91 decal on their helmets in memory of Marquise Hill. (Big Al’s tip.)
* Tedy got the first noticeable entrance ovation followed by the biggest one of the day which was for Randy Moss.
* There was no sign of Dante Stallworth, Kareem Brown, nor any of the Puppies.
* Josh Miller was fully suited up but didn’t make a single punt. Tom Malone(#1) was horrible so Danny Baugher (#5) was the best out there today.
* Health Evans got the first “Belichick Tutorial” for his blocking techniques.
* I saw a new drill today in which there was a large ring (like a 10ft hoola-hoop) placed on the ground and a towel was dropped just inside the rim. The DBs ran around the curve and had to drop their hand to scoop it up on the way by.
* Moss makes everything look soooo easy! I was impressed with his attitude out there as well. He dropped a pass from Brady during drills and was clearly pissed at himself. Throughout the day, he would follow through after catching his passes and didn’t dog it. He made some great catches over the middle from Brady, and blew by Willie Andrews for an impressive sure TD at one point. Then, after practice he went over and signed although it wasn’t his units turn. Good start :-)
* Brady’s went to Welker quite a bit today and it’s nice to see jersey #83 represented so well.
* Cassell was WAY off today, overthrowing his intended targets more often than not.
* Tedy broke up a couple of passes but I couldn’t see the intended TE down the other end of the field, on one and the other was intended for Garrett Mills (#45)
* Ellis Hobbs left the field at one point but did return before the end of practice.
* Kyle Brady took down Justin Rogers on a drill but I’m still awaiting the “Opening Pop” of camp. (C’mon Tedy and/or Rodney!)
* Gostkowski was kicking field goals in the opposite endzone at the end of practice.
* Running Backs signed today and Vrabel, Moss, and Brady were the extras that I could see.
* Overall it was a pretty low-key camp session, mobbed with fans and media. I’m learning the roster and hope to have it down pat early this year. :-)

I’ll be heading back to the evening session, but for now I have a puppy that needs attention. Also, from what I got for info, the question of camp being “closed” in the rain is the same policy as in the past. While there is no public access to view camp in person, they won’t turn you away if you show up and will allow you to still watch inside of Gillette Stadium. Not sure if it’s completely official but I did get that from someone who works there.

You're my favourite Mrs B in the world. Ta! :rocker:

The new drill is an interesting one. Practicing picking off poor throws or fumbles, perhaps?

As far as I know, this is the only place the Hill decal on the helmets has been reported.

As usual, great job.

Very nice, I like that both an analytical and fan's perspective are represented. It is also very cool that your family is participating, they must understand how significant training camp is to you.

I am hopeful that this will be my family's first trip to camp (I can't be too sure things will go as planned with 2 kids under 3).

You reported a number of things that no other blog has mentioned. For example, no one else even mentioned Cassel's name, they're so focused on Brady and Moss.

As usual, great job.

I noted that as well, and am quite pleased that the team has done this.

Great repoty Mrs B....I just got home from camp...(a BAD scene on 128 North..traffic wise.) so I will add a few things to your always great reports. 1---A bit of odd communication started the day when I came in through P1 and at the gate down the road was told they wouldn't be opening there till 8. Hmmm...so I drove back and parked by the old Pro Shop entrance where a number of fans were. WIthin a minutes, another person told us we couldn't park there which was GOOD, because this time we were allowed through the gate around the back of the stadium to the parking lot. This was very early (7:29-7:30) as I was in the first 20 to get into the Camp.
2----The first part of the practice (inc stretching and such) seemed like it was almost all on the far practice field, so all in the stands were using binoculars and other aids to see what was going on.
3---The first player on the field was Matt Gutierrez who walked out about 8:20. Junior was another of the early arrivals and he and Rodney talked a lot as they were warming up.
4---I did not see any of the PUP players leave as they have done in the past, so I assume all stayed in teh dome for the entire time.
5---Moss did make some big catches..over the niddle for a big one an ddown teh left sideline for another, but one of the better catches I saw was by Welker, right in front of the bleachers. (The ball was out of bounds, but he somehow got to it and grabbed it).
6---The tight end that TedyB knocked the pass away from was Matt Kranchick, who looks BIG!!
7---Sammy Morris took a number of screen passes and looked good on them.
8---Brady did his usual quick signings in a number of places by the bleachers and the hill and Maroney was movevd when he came over. Vrabel and Thomas spebt some extra time on little one on ones after the practice and then both walked over to the bleachers for autographs.
As Mrs B said, a low key start, but in the heat, it was a great start.

It's good to hear the crowd give Moss a good ovation like that.
That will help him keep his good disposition.
Thanks for your reports Mrs. B.

Karen - your blog was my first stop when I logged in this afternoon. No more disclaimers, you're the best and your fan base loves you.

As always, thanks for sharing your enjoyment of our Patriots with those of us living a bit further away. :rocker:

p.s. I went to leave a comment at the blog but, it wanted me to sign-in to post. I either didn't see or missed the signs to your security office so I'm back to your tried and true fanclub thread. ;)

Just have to add my 2 cents and say thank you. There's alont in your report that the "real media" don't have. Thanks for doing it.

BTW -- Heard Alisonlovedbrady on the radio yesterday and can't believe he still has a job.

Mrs B nice post as always. We on here cant get enough so even if some is second time thru its still good stuff.

I believe this drill was a drill geared to getting good position and a low center of gravity for a gunner.....could be wrong but thats what it looked like to me..anyone else who saw it have an idea.

Anyone else think that Seau is just a freak? I mean he's like 40 and still looks like a bodybuilder.

My first impression is this looks like an edge rushing drill like the DL/LBs do at the Combine using cones to show where they have to turn the corner to get to the CB...another thought is this is a good way to develop a DB's balance for getting a hand on the low & away throws.

Thanks for the photos!

Lua looks like a little fire plug in the one picture, but Cory Mays looks pretty solid himself - do you know if that's Coach Patricia Mays is listening too?

It could well be something like that. Seeing the actual pics made me think differently to my original opinion (that it was an exercise in scooping up low throws or balls on the ground). I understand from weather.com that it is mid 80s. Ouch.

The pics are fantastic, btw.

Felt a lot hotter with the humidity too. Dew points were up in the 60s.

Definitely not a scoop and score drill; you would never teach a player to scoop with one hand.

The hoop drill is usually used for OLB/DE to simulate an outside pass rush. It may very well be a Special Teams drill.
