Default ProFootballWeekly.com's Mock Draft

24. New England Patriots — FS Brandon Meriweather, Miami (Fla.)
The Patriots can feel comfortable selecting a supersmart, versatile talent because of the locker-room leadership that self-polices brash, young superstars.

28. New England Patriots — DE Justin Harrell, Tennessee
With Ty Warren needing to be locked up with a long-term deal and the premium the Patriots place on their front, Harrell could be plugged in as a five-technique. It will be difficult to find another like him in the coming rounds, and the Patriots will always draft for value more than need. Cornerbacks can be found in the next two rounds.

I just don't get that second pick, especially not with Chris Houston and David Harris still on the board.

But we don't really pick in the next two rounds! (Take 62 picks off, I think)

Default Re: ProFootballWeekly.com's Mock Draft

If they take another D-lineman, I'm going to throw up! Seriously, by taking a lineman means the organization doesn't have much confidence in re-signing Ty Warren. I understand the whole taking the best available player strategy but come on! It's like if the Pats took another tight end just because he is the "best available player". They don't need lineman in the 1st round and they certainly don't need a TE in the 1st round. They only way I would understand either pick if the value isn't there at CB, S, ILB, OT, but that is unlikely to happen.

It's too hard to decide right now because we don't know where anybody is going to go right unlike last year. I'm slowly making my draft board.

However, these are players I like:

CB Aaron Ross
CB Marcus McCauley
CB Chris Houston

S Reggie Nelson
S Michael Griffin

DE/OLB Jarvis Moss
DE/OLB Quentin Mosses (not in 1st round)

ILB David Harris
ILB Patrick Willis
ILB/OLB Zak DeOssie

G Justin Blaylock

T Joe Staley

RB Lorenzo Booker
RB Michael Bush
RB Darius Walker
RB Kenny Irons

WR Anthony Gonzalez
WR Steve Smith
WR Steve Breaston
WR Sidney Rice
WR Craig Davis

Ty has two more seasons on his rookie contract, aren't being a bit melodramatic here? I don't know about you, but I'd be happy to see Marquis Hill fighting for his roster spot.

If we drafted Harrell we might just be able to whack both Hill and Smith. Wilfork would be the NT with Harrell as a backup - but also knowing Wright and even Seymour and Warren can play in a pinch. After Seymour and Warren we'd have Wright, Green and Harrell who can all play legit DE.

If we could keep Smith or Thomas on the PS I think that group of Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Wright, Green, Harrell might be enough and we could save a roster spot that we got NOTHING out of last year.

Yes, I saw the Harrell sleeper thread, but you'll find he's napping on my list of 3-4 DL in my draft board building threads. Harrell would be fine at the end of round one, I don't see him pushing Smith off the roster yet, I expect BB to go with 7 DL as before. Thomas could be kept on the Practice Squad under the third year porgram, or he could push Smith off the roster - I believe Smith would not be eligible for the squad after being on the 53 all last season. I like Harrell, but unlike Carriker, I don't see him as a special talent, he's a safe pick, but I would expect the Pats to go in a different direction at the end of round one and letting him slide to the Jets.

Not being a wiseguy, just out of curiosity how many of the above have you seen play enough to be able to "like" them?
