Before you blast me, Belichick has "reached" for players he liked before in the first round, usually to good effect. Mankins and Watson were taken a little higher than expected and even Seymour was thought of as a little but of an overdraft an #6 (although he was a top half of the first round pick going in).
Anyway. I'm not hoping for this, I want a Safety and CB in the first round to rebuild the athleticism in the secondary with Harrison old, Wilson and Gay both UFA in a year and Samuel either a UFA or an almost $10M Franchise player. With no further ado, my sleeper for #28 is Tenessee DL Justin Harrell. OUCH says everyone. His torn biceps is looking healed which is the only thing keeping him from being a late first to mid second pick. He can legitimitely play DE or NT in a 3-4. He can be dominant against the run and has some explosivness as a pass rusher although the numbers don't show it. He's happy to do the dirty work and loves playing football as evidenced by trying to play through an injury that most players wouldn't have. For those who want Carriker, this is the DL who fits our defense who we can actually get.

A reach for a guy who is maybe 3 rounds lower. He's injured. He's going into a position where there are already a ton of guys and no immeditate need. But he's "happy to do the dirty work" and has "some explosiveness"! OK, that settles it, let's draft him! |

It would not shock me. And if they do, I would accept it becasue I have faith in their judgement.
However, if we are going to do something like that, we should trade up with both #1's and grab Willis, if we can.

On the injury, I'm under the impression that he's healthy now or will be by training camp, I'm fairly sure that's what Mayock said last night. 3 rounds lower ? Absolutely not. If we still had our #2 I would have been very surprised had he made it there. VERY surprised. No immediate need ? Maybe not but he'd give us our most complete DE to rotate with Seymour and Warren and a more legit NT than Wright.

I don't even think that it's unlikely that Harrell go at #28. He could be gone before #28.

They did a piece on him on the "Path to the Draft" on the NFL network. They mentioned he did 31 reps on the bench press, so I doubt the biceps is a problem any longer. Given who we still have on the roster and the glaring needs we have at LB and in the secondary, one would be hard pressed to get excited about this pick
HOWEVER, I have always felt that BB conciders the DL to be the most difficult area to find QUALITY DLmen, and if he has him rated that high, I can surely see him not passing him by. I believe a potentially great DLman is NEVER to be passed by in the Beoli draft ethos Personally I wouldn't be thrilled, but I certainly would understand. BTW- the NFL network people thought he could very well move into the bottom of the first round, because of the year he had in 2005 and the fact the DT class this year is very thin at the top end, with only Branch and Okoye rating first round status. They mentioned usually there are 4-5 DTs rated that high. Last edited by patfanken; 04-13-2007 at 11:03 AM. |

![]() I think he'd fall into the category of 'classic BB pick'. If a player is considered a potential first rounder, but gets injured, is now healed, and fits the Pats -- why wouldn't BB consider him? I'll be the first to say that BelichickFan deserves full credit for this very late riser. Good choice. ![]()
