Welcome to RCA

INDIANAPOLIS -- Welcome to the RCA Dome, where the Patriots will visit the Colts in the AFC Championship game tonight (6:30 p.m. EST).

The seating capacity of the Dome is slightly more than 57,000.

Some of the names listed on the ring around the stadium provide reminders of the Colts' past, such as former Boston University receiver Bill Brooks (1986-92), quarterback Jim Harbaugh (1994-97), and coach Ted Marchibroda (1975-79, 92-95).

The media crowd is overflowing here in the press box, which will have some of the working press watching from tables behind the press box.

Outside, construction continues on a new Colts stadium, which will be called Lucas Oil Stadium. It is scheduled to open in 2008.

We'll plan on passing along updates along the way.

On this date

INDIANAPOLIS -- Today marks the 13th anniversary of Robert Kraft pruchasing the New England Patriots. Kraft reflected on the day for a piece in today's Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2007/01/21/everything_he_envisioned/).

This marks the Patriots' fifth appearance in the AFC title game in Kraft's 13-year tenure.

INDY FEEL: There was some overnight snow here in Indianapolis, but of course, conditions won't be a factor as tonight's game will take place inside the RCA Dome. We'll be heading over to the stadium around the start of the NFC title game and will plan on checking back then.

Toss talk

One line of thinking from the Patriots' perspective is that they'd like to win the opening coin toss and score a quick touchdown, quieting what is expected to be a loud Colts crowd.

As we await for kickoff, we examined the Patriots' success on opening drives this season when they win the coin toss.

Here is the breakdown from 18 games (16 regular season, 2 playoffs):

Winning toss (12)
Touchdowns -- 3
Field goals -- 0
Punts -- 7
Turnovers -- 2

The touchdowns came in games against the Bills, Vikings and Jets (playoffs). The turnovers came in the season opener against the Bills and the regular season meeting with the Colts.

Bill in house

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has arrived at the RCA Dome, and took the field with his children. Wearing a suit and tie, he walked the length of the field, seemingly checking the surface, before engaging in a lengthy discussion with Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore.

Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli is also present on the field.

Linking up (http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/?p=904)
Posted by Albert Breer at 2:09 pm

Good afternoon from a cloudy, foggy, drab Indianapolis, where the locals are getting all dialed up for kickoff, still five-and-a-half hours away.

We’re gonna start with some links from here and around the country, then a little later on I’ll post three keys for each team to win and, then, we’ll scurry over to the Dome ’round 3 p.m. And, of course, kick it in to high gear from there.

So let’s start with what’s being said in these parts, those parts and parts of national perspective.

In today’s Herald, Mike Felger’s saying that the Patriots need to stand up, be the schoolyard bully today and smack the Colts right in the mouth (http://patriots.bostonherald.com/patriots/view.bg?articleid=178269&format=text). If they can catch them, that is. John Tomase got more on Rodney Harrison being deactivated (http://patriots.bostonherald.com/patriots/view.bg?articleid=178315&format=text) in his notebook. Meanwhile, Karen Guregian looks at Ty Warren (http://patriots.bostonherald.com/patriots/view.bg?articleid=178316&format=text) as not just a solid football player, but human being. And Steve Buckley’s got the other side, saying this is a defining moment (http://patriots.bostonherald.com/otherNFL/view.bg?articleid=178317&format=text) for Indy’s defense.

Over in MetroWest, we have a look at Bill Belichick of the Colts (http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/8998989597660676095) and the man behind the wide receivers (http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/8998989604002463743).

In the Indianapolis Star, columnist Bob Kravitz says, finally, it’s the Colts’ time (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/COLUMNISTS01/701210396). Meanwhile, beat writer Mike Chappell details how the Colts defense is different on the RCA carpet (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/SPORTS03/701210402), and Phillip B. Wilson wraps up his Patriots coverage by looking at the searing spotlight (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/SPORTS03/701210408) on Tom Brady.

On the national level, ESPN’s John Clayton says that, either way, history will be made (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs06/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=2734939) in the Dome today. Sports Illustrated’s Michael Silver calls coaching the Patriots’ biggest advantage (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/michael_silver/01/18/patriots/index.html) and the Web site also has a photo gallery look at five key matchups (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0701/gallery.nfl.matchup.patscolts/content.1.html). And finally, our guy, NBCSports.com’s Tom E. Curran, breaks down the game (http://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/874458/detail.html) and picks the Patriots.

Unlocking the game (http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/?p=906)
Posted by Albert Breer at 2:49 pm

Here’s three keys for each team to win an AFC Championship:

PATRIOTS

1. Disrupt the passing game. The Colts’ edge on offense is created by the timing that Peyton Manning has built with his receivers. So the best way to defend these guys is to throw that in to flux. It could come via pass rush – the way teams like the Steelers and Colts have attacked Indy – but that usually isn’t the way Bill Belichick gets these guys. See, if you blitz and don’t get there, it creates easy reads and hangs the secondary out to dry. The way Belichick and the Patriots have done it is to reroute receivers and drop a ton of guys into coverage. Play-calling, in mixing coverages and rush packages, is a big thing here.

2. Run the ball. Don’t be surprised if the Patriots spread the Colts out early and often. And don’t be surprised if it’s in an effort to get the running game going, by taking guys – Bob Sanders in particular – out of the box. That may be enough to attack Indy’s light front, especially with a hammer like Corey Dillon. Of course, it the running game gets untracked, it has more than one benefit. The biggest of which would be keeping Manning and the offense on the sideline, while controlling the game’s tempo. And also slowing the pass rush down. Screens, too, can serve this way and that facet of the Patriots offense should be better with Daniel Graham and Stephen Neal back after missing the Nov. 5 showdown.

3. Take care of the ball. Here’s a scary stat: the last three times the Patriots have faced Tampa-2 defenses, they’ve turned the ball over 13 times. That includes a five-turnover debacle against the Colts. The trouble facing this scheme is that there’s speed everywhere, and that comes up big with linebackers who can break on the ball quickly and take it from what may appear to be an open receiver.

COLTS

1. Take what they give you. One area where Peyton Manning has improved over the last few years is in managing games and playing situational football. Even struggling in the playoffs, and having faced an outstanding Ravens defense, the Colts have converted 14-of-31 third downs. They’ve moved the ball and played within the gameplan. And doing it again may the big difference today. The understanding here has to be that Manning’s got to guard against getting frustrated at points where he may have trouble with the Patriots defense. He’s done that well the last couple weeks in bouncing back from interceptions.

2. Play disciplined defense. The Colts defensive system in predicated on getting upfield and creating big negative plays for the offense. But what the Colts have to do is play the right way when those opportunities aren’t there. That means playing the one-gap system with discipline and timing, and eschewing leaving responsibilities in pursuit of a big play.

3. Get on top. Where the Patriots struggled with the Colts pass rush the last time the two teams played was in the second half, after Indy had a lead and as the clock became a factor. This Colts team is a different one when playing with a lead, something they’ve had in both their wins over New England the last two years. That dynamic is enhanced inside the Dome. The rush gets dialed up (19 of the team’s 25 sacks have come at home), the offense is able to be multifaceted and the crowd becomes very, very loud. The Colts, simply, must get the Patriots in catch-up situations.

We’re inside the RCA Dome, where they apparently love their country music and they love it at high volume. It’s screaming — or screeching, if you see it the way the Point After does.

It still being early here, the field in fairly devoid of anyone actually a part of the game. LB Rosevelt Colvin, Indy’s own, long snapper Lonie Paxton and P Todd Sauerbrun are the only players we’ve spotted on the field and there are no coaches are out there as of yet. There’s a lot of military personnel out there, preparing for a pregame ceremony, and some league officials.

We’ll be back, over course, plenty before the game starts.

Brady takes field

Quarterback Tom Brady has taken the field at the RCA Dome, and is loosening his arm with backup quarterback Matt Cassel. While kicker Stephen Gostkowski and punter Todd Sauerbrun are on the field in their game pants, Brady is in shorts and a T-shirt.

Several players have taken the field to loosen up.

Honorary captain Andre Tippett, who is one of 17 finalists for the Hall of Fame, is present on the sideline.

STAT TO REMEMBER: As game-time approaches, one stat to keep an eye on is the Patriots' third-down efficiency. In two playoff games, the Colts' defense has held opponents to a 3-of-22 success rate on third down.

Troy time

Wide receiver Troy Brown, who has been questionable on the team's injury report with flu-like symptoms this week, has taken the field to loosen up. He's wearing his game pants, which is an indication he's ready to play.

On the opposite side of the field, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is firing passes as he loosens up.

Welcome to the RCA Dome

Hey all --

We have squeezed into the very tight quarters here at the RCA Dome, with the NFC Championship game on the televisions over our right shoulder and several players warming up on the field below us.

It's very quiet here in the Dome, which belies the madness just outside -- there is a massive dance and cheerleading competition here this weekend, and there are hundreds of overly made-up young girls in the convention center that's connected to the stadium.

On the field, Adam Vinatieri is chatting with Todd Sauerbrun and Stephen Gostkowski in one of the end zones; Pats' receivers coach Brian Daboll is at centerfield, throwing to Chad Jackson; Troy Brown is going through his warmups solo; and offensive linemen Dan Koppen, Ryan O'Callaghan and Russ Hochstein are chatting and stretching.

We'll post more when the inactives come out.

Scenes from inside (http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/?p=908)
Posted by Albert Breer at 4:51 pm

Players are filtering in and off the field and the gates are open here in Indy. One interesting thing to watch is the much-ballyhooed pregame routing of Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. It looks kinda like a basic pat-and-go drill, with the quarterback taking a quick drop, lobbing the ball up and the receivers running under it. One thing the Point After noticed here is how fast-paced it is. Manning literally lets go of the ball, goes back to the original spot and drops again, while the receivers hustle back alternately.

On the Patriots side, CB Ellis Hobbs is still wearing his Patriots shirt that says “RIP D. Williams” in honor of fallen fellow Dallas-area native Darrent Williams, the Broncos corner who was shot and killed in the early-morning hours of New Year’s Day. A bunch of other Patriots are also out there, most of them skill-position players. And Colts tailback Joseph Addai was seen chatting up fellow rookies Laurence Maroney and Chad Jackson a minute ago.

One more thing: This place has a wierd feel to it. There are nine big Colts banners hanging from the roof, with only four bearing the word “champions” on them. All of those represent division titles. Two others are for AFC Championship appearances, and three more are for winning the wild-card berth to the playoffs. Ouch. Also present is the Colts playoff slogan: “Make It Personal.” And in the ring of honor lies the name Bill Brooks, a Framingham native, Boston University grad and a Colts from 1986-92.

I like how Felger says "If they can catch them"....... the colts speed is a urban legend.

Asante and Hobbs are just as quick and Sanders is decent.

The linebackers might have some difficulty but they are bigger than the colts. they contained LT, they can corral the colts.
