Welcome to Alltel
JACKSONVILLE -- Welcome to Alltel Stadium, where the Patriots (10-4) visit the Jaguars (8-6) today. The current temperature is 71 degrees and it's cloudy. Wind shouldn't be much of a factor.
With a win today, the Patriots would clinch the AFC East championship. Meanwhile, the Jaguars need wins in their last two games (vs. Patriots, at Chiefs) to clinch a berth.
New punter Todd Sauerbrun and long snapper Lonie Paxton were the first to take the field this morning.
Scouts from the Titans and Chiefs are scheduled to be in attendance today. The Patriots visit the Titans next week, while the Jaguars visit the Chiefs.
The magnitude of the game is reflected in some of the media coverage expected today. CBS Sportsline's Pete Prisco and ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli are two of the national writers in attendance today.
We'll plan on posting updates throughout the day.

Faulk in focus
RB Kevin Faulk is warming up on the field, under the watch of running backs coach Ivan Fears, strength coach Mike Woicik, and trainers Jim Whalen and Joe Van Allen. It looks like this means Faulk is a game-time decision, as he's testing his injured knee to see how it responds.

Eyes on holder
One area to watch in today's game is who holds on field goals. That was the role held by punters Josh Miller and Ken Walter.
Backup quarterback Matt Cassel is on the field now, warming up as a holder.

Patriots will have hands full
http://sports.mainetoday.com/pro/patriots/061224patsjaguars.html
Rosevelt Colvin, the hard-rushing linebacker for the New England Patriots, said you only need one word to describe this week's opponent, the homestanding Jacksonville Jaguars: "Big."
Big, as in physical stature. Big, as in play-making ability.
-----
Some teams have big players, but play a finesse game. There's nothing fancy about Jacksonville. The Jaguars are going to pound at you in every which way.
-----
"We definitely look at this game personally," said defensive tackle Richard Seymour. "Because every time a team wants to run the football, you have to look at it in a personal manner and step up."
My brother just called from the 50 yard line...says Maroney is walking around in the endzone with headphones on and cut off t-shirt. Says he's jogging through pass patterns. Hopefully he comes back out in full gear.

Good news re: LoMo!! Yes,the Jags ARE big. Noinjuriesnoinjuriesnoinjuries...
If this isn't really a playoff game it's a damn good imitation of one.
I'm nervous (note to self: act like you've been here before because you have).

Jaguars trying to create a playoff atmosphere
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/football/orl-jags2406dec24,0,5587884.story?coll=orl-sports-football
"We're in that playoff mode," he Rio said. "We're in that got-to-win, got-to-win-right now [mindset]. We need to play our best football."
-----
Jackonsville has specialized in hurting itself nearly as much as it helps itself, a formula that won't work against New England. The Patriots (10-4) can clinch the AFC East for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in six seasons with a win at Alltel or a New York Jets loss Christmas night in Miami.
"It's definitely going to be a test for me," said Garrard, noting New England's No.. 2 NFL ranking in scoring defense. "I'm going to be ready for it."
-----
Leading rusher Fred Taylor's sore right hamstring has him sidelined. Taylor's backup and the Jags' big-play kick returner, Maurice Jones-Drew , still is hobbled by an unspecified knee injury from last week, though he practiced leading up to the game.
The health of both are key: The Jags are No.. 2 in the NFL in rushing, and their method of attack since October has been to go after teams with Taylor and Jones. Now LaBrandon Toefield (nine carries , 20 yards this season) and Alvin Pearman (89 yards on 19 carries) will be called upon.
-----
To New England Coach Bill Belichick , the key member of Jacksonville's backfield is healthy. That would be Derrick Wimbush .
"He probably does the best job of any fullback I've seen in a long time of reading blocking schemes and getting to the right place, and those backs follow him religiously," he said. "Which they should be."

Felger just said Maroney was in BB's doghouse last week for a "minor infraction". This means good news re the injury? No, it means Felger has been watching NFL Network and listening to the speculation.

No, it means Felger has been watching NFL Network and listening to the speculation.
Felger essentially said "Maroney didn't play because he was in the doghouse last week for a minor infraction. Being late to a meeting or whatever it was, if it happened this week Maroney would be playing."

This game is already proving why the prognosticators are idiotic. After watching a parade of so-called experts claim the Jaguars would win this game because "they're like Miami, they can apply pressure on the defensive line", I was sick to my stomach. This Jaguars team is nothing like Miami - they don't have anyone comparable to Jason Taylor, they have way more size inside but not as much talent outside, a team the Pats match up perfectly with. They can clog up the middle and steer the outside guys wide, nullifying the rush and allowing Brady to find throwing lanes. Lo and behold, Brady comes out throwing to 4 and 5 wides. I really wish the doofs on TV actually knew something about football.
this is the frustrating thing about this offense...spurts of brain cramps....3rd and 1 and we dont convert in 2 chances...

In the 1st half the Patriots passing O looks like the 2001 version. Dink and dunk. Has Chad Jackson seen the field yet? Maybe I missed it. Afterall isn't this the week he has his breakout game -:) Even PS Bam Bam has a
catch. The WR's their using don't seem to be capable of stretching the field at all. Hard to tell how the Jags are playing it back there. The CB's look to be a few yards off the WR's at the snap. If it weren't for the Drew TD where he should have been tackled, It'd be 10-0

I like Gostkowski but you can see Brady's frustration with that missed FG. Combined with the roughing the passer penalty and that's a 10-point swing. I'm rooting for the Pats but they don't have that championship feel to them right now. Still waiting for it.

No way was that a Roughing the Passer call. Talk about BS.
There have been too many BS roughing and PI calls, not just against the Pats. Before we know it, Football will be non-contact.

You gotta question Belichicks decision to go for the 49 yard FG rather than play field position in that situation too unless he is BS at Saurbraun already. Starting to unravel now with mental errors and penalties on both sides of the ball.

We would be dominating the score except for stupid mistakes. The not tackling Jones-Drew on his 74 yard TD when we could have, the Seymour stupid roughing the passer on an INT, and a false start by Daniel Graham on 3rd and 1 on makable field goal range was probably a 17 point swing in the Jags favor.

Let's see... with a 3 point lead, the defense just forced another punt from a Jacksonville offense that has done nothing without a fluke long touchdown run and a desperation heave following a nullified interception, the offense has been moving the ball well against a very good Jacksonville defense, and people are acting like the Pats just blew a huge lead. Crazy. Jacksonville is praying that the Pats' offense makes a big mistake, because they know it's unlikely they score without one.

Indeed. That gameplan still haunts me to this day, especially because the Pats opened the game running the ball extremely effectively, and looked poised to take a lead. Against a team like Indy that is built exclusively to play from ahead, that would have been killer. Instead, Brady throws that deep pick and they never go back to pounding the ball.
And OMG, the season looks to be over. Brady looks to be really hurt.
EDIT: Check that, Brady is apparently made of 100% Natural Rubber. Unbelievable.

WOW. Easily our biggest win of the season. Cinci may have been one of our biggest wins all year but this one definitley takes the cake.I guess this team does still find great ways to win. Thank god for Jarvis Green. The entire team played awesome except for one or two guys, it looked like Brady took a nasty hit, very nasty, it was awesome to see him return two plays later and lead us down the field.
