Default Red Sox / Patriots Local Effect On The Bruins.

First of all the NHL is on a downslide right now. But other than that I can't help but think that Kraft and John Henry & Co. have been so successful in the marketing area it has devastated the Bruins.

The media always covers the hottest stories ... and let's face it that has been the Red sox and the Patriots for the last 5-7 years. Even should the Bruins win a Calder Cup they would still be behind both the Patriots and Red Sox.

Looking at it from my point of view ... the Red Sox were always first followed by the others. With the internet, cable TV, and media efficiencey the Patriots have gone to the front of the pack...there is news almost every day....not that way with the Bruins.

It's exciting to be a Patriots fan, almost as exciting to be a Red Sox fan ... and it's a labor of love to be a Celtics and Bruins fan...unless the Bruins can find a way to get more media attention ... they are doomed to be #3 and #4 around here ... I like them as much as I always have...but their demise is just a sign of the times.

Larger than that is the product on the ice, and lack of star power. Loved the Bruins, was a die hard fan, but after the Orr era the whole game lost a lot and have never been a big fan since. Now that it has turned into a "nice" game, do not care for it at all. Bring back the Wayne Cashmans, Esposito's, McKenzie's, Sanderson and throw in an Orr then maybe it might be fun again.

Winning solves everything. How big were the Pats when they were perennial losers? The Bruins were the 5th worst team in the league last year. The strike certainly didn't help. Before that, they'd get people's hopes up, and get bounced in the first round of the playoffs. The team, coaching, and ownership are getting better, but not many people care enough to notice. If they put together a Cup run, people will notice. As it stands, the NHL product itself isn't enough to sell to people, thanks to its Bettmanization.

There's a huge difference between a demise of players getting old and retiring than ownership being naive, stupid and greedy. They've torn this team to threads. A contender? I love this team when they sucked any year from when I was 5 until 30ish. But I'm never coming back until they put a product together that's good and they are not going to dismantle.

Clearly our owner is a Buffalo fan first.

This has nothing to do with winning and losing. Has nothing to do with what the Pats and Red Sox are doing. It has everything to do with ownership. Anyway this subject is a sore one for me. I'll return to the Bruins forum when we actually have competence in our organization. I have no doubt our fans are. We grow up playing the sport and still have good college teams to get us by and keep us in the loop.

See, I would argue that if the (Boston) Bruins won the Calder Cup, it would be huge news. It's not often you see a major league team demoted to the minor leagues.

It's the STANLEY CUP, not the Calder Cup(AHL)! I have been a Bruins fan before any of the 4 local pro teams('74) and still begrudgingly watch. What can I say? The best possible thing that could happen for the Bruins, and the NHL for that fact, is for Jeremy Jacobs to get the H-E-(double hockey sticks) out of Boston and put one of the NHL's most beloved franchises back in the hands of someone that knows and loves hockey! The B's will be back! How soon is the question? They will never be able to compete with the popularity of the other three, but even in the 70's and 80's they never had a problem selling out the Garden for Saturday matinee games with the likes of the Habs or Rangers.
